The best way I can describe Breathedge is a satirical commentary on survival games while still managing to deliver a great survival game experience with a surprisingly deep story.

The game gets so unpleasantly grindy.

I'd give this game a 6/10. It's an average survival crafting game, in the vein of Subnautica, Planet Terraformer, etc.

I enjoyed it the most in the first two chapters where the focus was more on exploration, crafting, and survival. Here were my main issues:

1. After the first two chapters (after leaving in the Normandy), the rest of the game is very linear. There is very little to explore other than the clearly-marked areas you must go to in order to advance the plot.

2. There are collectible items all over the place, but it feels like a big joke the devs were playing on players, because 99% of that stuff is "useless junk" that you'll never really have a use for, unless for some crazy reason you go back to the start and waste your life with base-building (and there aren't nearly as many customization options as other games in this ilk, so you'd run out of inspiration very quick there). When I got to the end of the game, I really wished I hadn't spent so much time stockpiling stuff in case I might need it.

3. The one time I DIDN'T stockpile an item (a tool), I got softlocked in the game and couldn't progress (Chapter 6). I looked in every nook and cranny, but I couldn't find the parts I needed to make the thing I needed to progress. Luckily, I was able to reload from a prior checkpoint.

4. The humor mostly didn't land with me. I wasn't offended; as a female gamer I'm used to games catering to the 12-year-old boy sensibility. But I doubt even a 12 year old boy would find any of the sexist humor funny. The writing depended a lot on tired sexist tropes (isn't it funny how dumb men are when they think a hot woman is interested in them??? ha...ha.). There seemed to be thousands of corpses around, but none of them (but one, as I recall) was female. No female characters--or corpses--have a face. And the only living female character a nameless, faceless "babe" in a pink spacesuit whose sole purpose is to draw the protagonist onwards. Really? Is this 2024 or 1980, devs? HOWEVER, I did find some of the other jokes funny--I liked the spacesuit voice a lot, and I have to say I laughed out loud when you had the choice to swap out the robot's cigarette for something else ("Hooray for censorship!"). Also loved the Subnautica callout at the end, and the self-aware interactions with the end credits--that was great. So, sometimes it did get a chuckle out of me.

5. The plot made no sense. Like, it was so convoluted and insane I had no idea what was going on most of the time. I think that was by design, but it would have been nice if it had been simplified just a wee bit. I didn't understand who the Green Universe were, at all, for example. I wondered at first if they were vegan terrorists (which would have been funny) but they apparently ate meat since they had cows and cans of beef and such on their ship. I also didn't understand why we needed to examine all the corpses and find out how they died. I'm sure I missed some dialogue, but it whizzed by so fast I was never able to keep up.

6. I know it's meant to be funny ("they were so dumb they all died!") but some of the scenes were pretty bleak for a game that's supposed to be funny. Smeared blood everywhere, lots of suicides, bodily organs (including brains) floating about--it was more "creepy and gross" rather than funny. I didn't really see the point of having so much gore in a game advertising itself as comedy (if I'm playing Alien: Isolation or Dead Space, no problem, if you see what I'm getting at).

7. Often very tedious (although this is expected with this kind of game). I didn't like this as much as other games like this mostly because the 360-degree space navigation was often disorientating. It was very hard to find small objects in the vastness of space, and I often had such trouble finding my vehicle, even with the white label/icon on it. I'd be spinning around constantly, trying to figure out where I was, where my vehicle was, etc. This game would not be for someone with motion sickness. I didn't realize in the beginning that the game had a forward progression (a literal forward movement, and you wouldn't need to go back to previous points), so I wasted a lot of time building up bases and then abandoning them after they got too far away to be useful.

8. This is a small quibble, but why not let us interact with the chicken? Grandpa said to feed the chicken, but we're never allowed to do so. We can't even see the chicken in our inventory. Likewise, what was the point of not giving "Babe" a face? Was it just too much trouble to animate that?
