The writing is so cringey and horrible.
I bought this on my PS5 and not knowing elsewhere to write, I'm writing this on a steam forum. I've played through the first realm and met the second realm's lord but the writing is so terrible I can't stand it. I spent like $65 on it and can't get any enjoyment. Gameplay is awesome, the premise looks interesting, graphics look superb, love the voice acting, but the writing... writing kills it all.

This is not my first exposure to JRPGs. I get that it's anime-based. I get that we are going to have hyper unrealistic costume, world building, and cheeky, cheesy dialogue and I'm okay with that. But the quality of writing pierces through my suspension of disbelief screeching "You still gonna be immersed after these? How about these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dialogues and writing? have some more." until I break.

It's all over the game but every moment is cringeworthy and terribly childish. I just quit the game after the scene where the rebel leader was almost executed. The enemy lord asks him to confess his wrongdoing (broadcasting this interrogation 'live' is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brilliant idea, no ♥♥♥♥) and the leader starts lamenting about his personal mistakes and life regrets in two minutes monologue turning into some kind of an inpirational speech nobody interrupts, ending with his child(who turned him over) repenting and coming to save him. The lord calls them conspirators and the protagonist retorts back "No, we are not conspirators. We are friends!" Did anyone not cringe watching this event unfold?

Holy mother of Shakespeare this game is amazing in a sense that it keeps breaking my lowest expectations when it comes to its writing as if there is no bottom. I really wanna love this game. This is the 3rd game I bought on PS5. It's really damn hard when a game that takes itself seriously fails to have any relatable, coherent writing and stories. At least I can give a credit to inter-character dialogues although all characters are paper thin anime tropes and predictable to their core.

Does anyone feel the same? I don't know why some JRPGs writing is so cringey and unrealistic.... I didn't expect the story to be any good but the level of writing is too much to bear.

i get what you mean but i didnt really find it that annoying tbh. granted i dont take jrpg stories very series from a line to line basis. if the plot as a whole works, im good. the plot on many levels isnt arises strong suit and thats okay, because its eyecandy and has the best combat in the series. a neat baseline for further titles. im willing to cut this game some slack, because it was the first time the devs worked with UE4.

Are you playing with EN audio? The translation and dub is pretty mediocre.

This game has pretty amazing (actually amazing, when compared to movies and books) writing but it requires using the JP voicetrack to get it across to the player.

That said, I frown when someone writes ''cringe'' and ''cringeworthy''.

Why?

Because ''cringe'' is something inside of people themselves. If you Cringe at something, that is you being awkward and problematic and not willing to face whatever your dealing with, not whatever you consider ''cringe'' being a problem.

Childish? Its the most mature game ive played in a while. Actually if anything it feels like the characters are way more mature then they have a right to be given the context. Where does Alphen gain that much Wisdom from when he has no memories? Or Kisara when she was so blind to reality before?

What? That is opposite to the reality. This game has far better writing and delivery then the majority of games.

Again I have to ask if you played this game in EN voice and reading just the EN dialogue, because if so you are really making the experience worse for yourself.

If you keep going to the third and fourth lord arc, you'll get more cringy stuffs that even anime fans would criticize.

If manga/anime really want to grow larger, they should tone down the "shounen" cliches, make less of these anime/manga, and promote the seinen & other genre for adults. They can start with banning One Piece, Naruto, Fairy Tails (Edens' Zero), and adapt Parallel Paradise into anime.

I'm not sure why you consider themes of slavery and racial repression to be Shounen.

It can be. Just like how the themes of pirates, ninja, wizards can be shounen.

If the revolutionaries act and talk like Alphen and Law, it's more than enough to make it a shounen story.

Alphen: 'what makes you think all of them made it past here?'
Party: ''..''

Alphen, the overly optimistic and also positive Shounen MC. He doesnt sound like it much?
Alphen isnt really that shounen. He's just an idealist.I dont know why you'd consider someone being idealistic to be a clear sign of a shounen story.

Its actually refreshingly 'mature' that the party discusses what happens after their struggles and actually deals with some serious issues without just laughing it off (like shounen does) or pretending that ignoring those issues and living on as a broken being is fine. (which is common in seinen)

Law is definately very shounen, but its in his character. He's literally a shounen after all.

There is already a similar topic. Why create another one? You can discuss this in that thread.

Referring to the original post: No, you are not alone with this. The first two realms were still fine for me. The scene you described was not too convincing, but I didn’t view it as negative either. However, after that things went south plot-wise until the very end.
Suspension of disbelief can cover almost anything, no matter how crazy. That has nothing to do with JRPGs, it applies to all works of fiction. It has to be done right to achieve the desired effect, but that is where Arise’s plot fails: The story has logical and pacing issues; some characters appear a bit shallow, others absolutely one-dimensional; the world feels like a stage prepared for the player: small, and later areas empty, sparsely populated and not really alive.
Having a powerful, scary villain show up early is often a safe choice in storytelling. I can’t tell if Arise actually doesn’t want to make use of that or if it tries and fails spectacularly: There is one adversary who appears a few times throughout the game, but his first appearance happens pretty late and doesn’t tell anything about him or his plans. At least for me, the first contact left one clear impression: he is neither strong nor dangerous (there is a particular slime in realm 2 that was much harder and scarier).
Yeah, almost the first and second chapter is too naive, but others is not better, tbh,

so i even can use 1 paragraph to describe all stories, no surprise, perhaps just use 1 senstence, to defeat 5 lords then find 3 big secrets, then end. it's simple, hahaha

but the game's skit is fun, the biggest selling point is skit i think, the game has 1 achievements that is to watch 300 skits, yeah, in later stages of the games, if you travel back to the prievious maps, you might trigger some skits, it's really fun and enjoyable or likeable

every JRPG has similar writing like that its really hard to look for one that doesnt have cringe writing time to time it just comes with the genre

I thought the lowest point of the writing in this game is the Sephiroth wannabe and I kept wishing he would just go away already when he started to get more screen time, but overall the story was enjoyable enough.

This scene needs to be added into the most cringy anime moments Hall of Fame, along with those crying scenes from One Piece.
