Improved AI?
So, the latest update supposedly has improved AI. Has anyone noticed any differences so far?

Where did you get this from? The last patch-notes posted here are from August and don't mention any AI-improvements.

Just played a game and it does indeed seem different.
I still won but it was pretty close with my 280 over their 273, 247 and 234.
I cannot recall ever seeing such a high combined score. Unfortunately I didn't find the screenshot from my previous game's end-screen. In that one I had 289 and was like 100 score ahead of the second.

In the early-game the AI was rather economy-focussed and didn't really invest a lot into rather useless army, as I've often seen it do before.
They started to ramp up culture-production quite early. Also something that I often found them doing too late. And they did that all the while staying militarily relevant.

I'll definitely try that again soon to see whether it was just a fluke or they now can score like that consistently.

Did another game. This time I managed to achieve a score of 337...

...which was enough for rank 3. :o

AIs had: 357, 349 and 235.

So, yeah, they're really pretty darn good now.

Makes me wonder whether the AI for the challenges is also better now.

Game number 3:

This time I wanted to test how big the differences between the separate AI-levels are. So I put in one of each.

Hard won with 421
I was second with 393
Medium third with 365
Yellow fourth with 314

Seeing the easy AI score 314 points is kinda bonkers.

My assumption is that the difference in difficuly is related to search-depth in the monte-carl-tree-search and that there is also a heuristic to score different moves against each other all the time.
So while easy probably doesn't have a lot of search-depth, the scoring-algorithm is good enough to reach a 300+ score all on it's own.
Easy was notorious for making some really stupid moves in the past that the player could capitalize on.

Someone who just starts the game probably will be in a world of pain seeing how an easy-AI scores so much. It's great for experienced players but pretty sure its beating beginners to a pulp.

Yup, i dedicated a whole review on it.
Solo game at this point is no fun and waste of live time you could have spent on happier less frustrating activities, with way more to your live time joy!

You cant win, or on sheer luck!
4th serious game in (no expansions) vs 2 med AIs and I finally managed to win! 290, 252, 233.

Love the game. Nice to be able to play against a competent AI in a strategy title.

Good for you,
That does not mean that when you have a difficulty option (A choice) to make the AI NOT competent, and than it still overpowers your game, Is scamming you in a false sense of just having a casual game or training.

I guess even training AI can be difficult if you're misunderstanding the main strategy, which the tutorial doesn't hold your hand for new players.

The game is extremely min/max focused so if you're not used to doing that it will be hard to win. If you're looking for a causal solitaire kind of experience this is missing the point of the game I think.

Agreed with Semtex. This is the richest strategy game I have ever played, which is why I keep coming back to it year after year. Every decision (well, most) is so tight, so momentous, that there is rarely a point where there is an obvious choice to make. It can make your brain hurt, but in a good way.

So yes, it will take a while to get good enough to consistently beat the AI.

But these days, I win something like three-quarters of all games played vs the AI. So it is possible. And I don't actually think the AI got that much better in the last update. It still screws up Age III by not prioritising military enough, making culture wars an easy victory path if you've fallen behind in culture by that point.
case in point,
Your using DLC/expansion that give new leaders with considerable advantages that your strategy is based on of. Now you can say that there is a core, but yet you don't play core so i am not buying any shi.. to improve game play.

Last thing you want is a skynet AI, I bet the highest difficulty the game offers is going that direction and i am sure you don't play that difficulty level.

I can't simply play a solo game, only with friends that don't have time that much,
and playing with stagers is fine, but when one leaves and AI takes over i quit instant no one wins from that point on. No solo replay value!

You think people don't want to play against a truly difficult AI (that does not cheat)? You are just wrong on that.
