If you like Total war games in my opinion this is the best one.

My absolute favourite Total War game, the campaign level gameplay is so deep here and that's where I prefer to spend most time. That's not to say the combat is boring, it's not. But the campaign depth shines so brightly!

Purchased this game on release years ago, and probably should have returned it. Seems like a downward slide for historical Total War games.

It pains me to leave a negative to this game but it deserves it for all the flaws, bugs and oversights in the UI and control scheme. Little things that simply cannot be forgiven. Let me give you a few examples.

-Text and some UI elements are way too small. Changing resolution will not change the size of these things as the game will scale them proportionally. There is a Scale UI slider in the options but by default it is set at the maximum and all you can do is set the already too small UI and Text even smaller. This baffles my mind. I have somewhat poor eyesight and for me this game is an utter eyestrain.

-You cannot rebind some controls such as camera pan and fan. Middle mouse will fan the camera during battles but will pan it on the campaign map, to fan it on the campaign map you use left click instead. I absolutely hate inconsistencies like this in the controls and this is hard-coded, you cannot change it.

-In the options you can assign Camera rotate to different keys for campaign and Battles. However only the settings for campaign seems to work and it also applies to battles, you can set the option for it in the battle keybind menu but it apparently does nothing. Moreover, if you go to the battle keybind settings and bind some actions to the same keys that are used for map rotation in the campaign menu, it will not detect the conflict like the game normally does. Instead it will do both actions at the same time during battle. Like giving an order to a troop and also rotate the map at the same time.

-You cannot properly change battle speed with the keyboard, you have to use your mouse and manually click on the tiny icons. In Warhammer II you could bind "Cycle battle speed up" and "Cycle battle speed down" to two different keys, making it easy to control battle speed with your keyboard. One key makes it go faster, one key makes it go slower, easy and simple. But 3k here for some unfathomable reason only has "Cycle battle speed up"... You can only make it go faster. That means that if you want to lower the speed, you have to press the speed up button repeatedly until it cycles all the way through the different speed settings. Not only is this terribly inefficient and prone to errors but it will also make the battle go through the fastest settings for a moment while you cycle, when your intention was to slow it down. To add insult to injury, if you mash the button too fast in order to cycle through the settings quickly, the game lags out and does not register all the key presses, forcing you to cycle slowly. As a result the functionality is pretty much unusable and you are forced to use your mouse and click the tiny speed icons instead of using your keyboard. This is absolutely maddening, things like that mak me want to quit the game and never play again.

it is certainly a game

It would be a great game but you have to cheat/mod in order to have enough armies to fight off the infinite waves of zero cost instantly spawning AI armies.

Even the enemy generals cheat. My very strong general was easily defeated by an enemy general two levels lower. I captured the general and recruited her, thinking she must be amazing. She was a basic general with no good equipment or stats.

I hate to call game developers lazy because making games is hard. But it seems like they really didn't try at all. The AI just cheats and I do think it's lazy design.

It can still be fun while playing other humans. But usually even then you're going to spend most of your time fighting AI that cheats hard anyway.
