Be aware that if you buy it from a specific store, you have to buy dlc from the same store, or it can cause problems.
Games you buy on steam and Ubi store are treated as separate products. If you buy Anno 1800 on Ubi store, then you will not be able to add the DLCs from the steam store and vice versa. In that case, you can only add the game as a non-steam game to your library but certain features such as achievements won't unlock for your steam profile - you will have them on your Ubi account only.
Regarding controllers, it's a compatible steam feature. However, it's quite possible you will have to deal with some challenges as it's not very intuitive. Just make sure you start your game first, and then open the steam overlay from where you have to adjust and change all controller settings. I hope everything works then as it should. Last time I tried this, it was a total nightmare, lol
Anyway, I would still recommend you to wait a bit until the next steam sale and get Anno 1800 here in the store. That way you save yourself a lot of trouble and can enjoy your game in its full functionality.
If you buy the main game on the Steam store you can add DLC bought from Ubisoft store later.
During this winter sales I just bought the base game at 15$ on steam, and while playing on steam I have everything I bought on Uplay (because my 2 accounts are linked) while i should just have the base game.
Also worth to note, all the achievements I had on Ubisoft did transfer automatically on Steam on first launch.
So basically, buying the base game on Steam if you already have any version on Uplay allow you to import everything : DLC, saves, profiles & achievements
