Explosives are aren't great because them aren’t very precise
Elevator are better, as you can set the height to end at.
So place and replace an elevator over and over again ... I don't think it's faster or less exhaustive for a wide area though definitely has advantages for depth.

I personally would advise "Big Boom" mod for the purpose of excavation

You make a line of them… like 30+ in a row in the air above the land you wanna level. I copy 127 to the clipboard (as 128 is the water level, and that is the level I want the my floor at). I then hit add floor paste the 127 as the name and level and hit ok then build, while it’s building I’m going down the line.
This gives a straight 6m meter wide gash down the length of elevators
I have to go to the screen, hit add floor, you have enter a floor name and a level (hence just pasting the 127 twice) hit ok, then build.
Humping stuff up and down mountains is making me tired. Thank you.
