ABOUT 113th Cav / 51st Guards Rifles

"Mobility, Shock and Firepower"

The 113th Cavalry was constituted in 1921 as part of the Iowa National Guard and subordinated to the 24th Cavalry Division. The regiment participated in riot control duties during the Cow War in Iowa in 1931, and elements of the regiment suppressed labor unrest in Newton, Iowa in 1938. The regiment was relieved from assignment to the 24th Cavalry Division in September 1940, inducted into federal service on 13 January 1941, and moved to Camp Bowie, Texas on 25 January 1941.

The 113th Cavalry Regiment (Horse-Mechanized) sailed to England, arriving on 28 January 1944. In England, the regiment was converted to the 113th Cavalry Group (Mechanized), with the 1st Squadron becoming the 113th Cavalry Squadron (Mechanized) and the 2nd Squadron becoming the 125th Cavalry Squadron (Mechanized), both subordinated to the 113th Cavalry Group. The Group was also given the 82nd Engineer Battalion and the 801st Tank Destroyer Battalion, in essence forming a light division. Subsequently, the 113th Cavalry Group served as the mechanized cavalry group for the U.S. XIX Corps, and (for a brief time) the US VIIIth Corps fighting across Normandy, Inner FranceHolland, and the conquest of Germany. The 113th Cavalry Group returned to the New York port of entry on 25 October 1945 and was inactivated at Camp Shanks, New York, on 26 October 1945.

The 1-113th Cavalry Regiment (Armored/Mechanized) remains activated in the U.S National Guard, and has served several tours in Afghanistan-Iraq as a Brigade Reconassaince unit in the U.S 34th Infantry Division
---------------------------------------------------------------

The 51st Guards Rifles was originally constituted as the 76th Rifle Brigade (later Division) on September 5th, 1922. The unit primarily drew upon Armenian recruits, but had a more national contingent as well.

The 76th Rifles Division took part in the Allied Invasion of Iran in 1941, but would be rushed Northwards by September of the same year. It would participate in the First Battle of Kharkov, in which it would be severely depleted. After several actions against Army Group South in the summer of 1942, the Division would eventually find itself at Stalingrad in late July. It would fight in Stalingrad until October, when it would be used to help cut off the German's from their supply lines. For its successful actions and great zeal, the 76th would be made the 51st Guards Rifles in November of 1942.

The 51st Guards Rifles lives on today as the 51st Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Army.
