Valve is now offering content creators to charge for their work they put on the workshop, however there are many problems and it's (in my opinion) a bad, bad idea.

Some of the problems include:

-Modders only get 75% of the cut

-Modders must first generate $400 before they even start making money. Valve is basically taking free labor and turning a profit for the first $400 of every mod before a modder can even begin to make their meager 25%

-Already there are shit-tier mods like "high resolution horse genitals" for $99.99

-Modders are already stealing the works of others and will make profit. If it continues this way, Valve wont have the resources to deal with every workshop-capable game dealing with stolen content. They can hardly get customer service functioning.

-Other sites, like Nexus, will die out as people realise they can just charge for their mod on Steam instead.

-Modders are abusing their 3rd-party editing programs. Many are charging for their mods without buying a commercial license for their editing software (i.e. Autodesk).


They are dividing a once tight-knit community, and putting the #1 feature of PC gaming behind a paywall. Profiting off of other people's work.

Read people's opinions from various subreddits. All of these subs have one thing in common: They are either general gaming-related subreddits, or they are games that are heavily focused on enabling the mod communty (Total War, Space Engineers, Skyrim, Kerbal Space Program, Cities: Skylines, etc.). The overwhelming majority of people in these communities do not support this move. Do you?
