The demo of the week is Humbug Tales: Keeper of the Swarm.

• Abashed (sidescrolling, horror): Yet another semi-horror “puzzle” game about a person with mental health issues and pills, looking for someone, things you see aren’t real. Nothing impressive in the demo, lots of things to inspect just for story, and just one “put together the torn paper” puzzle.
  
• Beat Garden (programming-like): Grow plants to match a desired design. Given a sketch of a plant, with twigs, leaves and flowers on either side of the stem, set up the correct sequence of steps to grow the matching plant. You put these steps like notes on a stave, red grows up one more segment, blue grows a twig to the side of your choice, green grows a leaf, and so on. Sounds easy, but it’s made more complicated by the extra rules you must obey, like “red and blue don’t happen at the same time”, “green and red must overlap”, “keep blues three beats apart”. Nice game, the right balance of easy and challenging for casual puzzle players, good looking, my only issue is that it’s so unoptimized that it runs at like 3-5 FPS on my computer.
  
• ChessFinity (chesslike): regular and chess variants, including 3D chess and a roguelite deck builder.
  
• Circuit Maze (maze builder, tower defense): Place walls and other obstacles to build the longest maze. Not my type, but it’s done well enough to warrant a thumbsup if you like this type of game.
  
• EcoChess (chesslike): Modified chess with an ecological theme, play in the Amazon rainforest with animals against “the white man”. Powerups, different terrain types, different board shapes, configurable difficulty. A nice introduction to chess for beginners, or a different kind of challenge for chess enthusiasts. Looks good.
  
• Humbug Tales: Keeper of the Swarm (adventure): Control a swarm of ants and explore a vast garden: gather food, raise new ants, fight enemies, unlock new paths and keep exploring. Pleasant game, good for some cozy, relaxing time.
  
• Lab Escape: Box Puzzle Game (pathfinder): Help the rat escape from the lab by pushing magnets out of the way and reaching the exit hole. Mostly trivial levels, the only challenge is finishing the level in optimal moves to get all three stars. Only 3 undo steps, focus on optimizing the solution, few settings, no input caching, easy puzzles, didn’t impress me.
  
• Medusa Crisis (pathfinder): When Medusa finds herself under attack from Athena’s warriors, she must try to escape without being captured. Strategically sneak, turn enemies to stone, and try not to look into a mirror. Nice puzzles, good looking, but the lack of undo makes it a bit tedious.
  
• No Rest for Lex (point&click adventure): Old style point&click adventure game, pixel graphics, fourth wall breaking cheap humor all the time. Being part of a series, it seems to start right in the middle of things, assuming we already know all the characters and what happened with them in the previous games. Kind of linear, but maybe just because the demo is very short. Not my style of humor, but feel free to give it a try.
  
• Passant: A Chess Roguelike Demo (chesslike, roguelite): Play increasingly difficult chess matches to earn coins, buy pieces, badges and coins. Starting with mostly empty boards with few pieces, each win grants you coins. With these coins you can buy chess variant pieces to fill in your ranks, badges that alter the game like exploding capture, unique pieces, cheaper shop, extra undos, or single-use powers like freezing a piece, turning a piece into a queen, or selling a piece. Nice game!
  
• Ratico Puzzle Adventure (pathfinder): Move a rat through different levels, trying to put yellow balls in the target spots. Try to get stars for finishing the level, getting the cheese slice, eating all the apples, staying under a certain number of moves and under a certain time. Not all stars can be accomplished at once, so you’ll have to play each level a few times. Many levels require incredible speed to get the time star, and at least one is entirely impossible. Slow movement and uncached inputs lead to many accidental moves which make it even harder to achieve the move count and time goals. The vast majority of levels aren’t difficult, so finding a solution isn’t the challenge. I thought I’d enjoy this, but it was very frustrating instead.
  
• Ryder (adventure, 3D platformer, creature collector): Solve platforming and resource management puzzles to unlock creatures, which you can then telepathically control. The puzzles are of the type “you have 2 keys, how can you pass through 4 gates with them?”. Nice puzzles, except that solving them often requires some 3D platforming.
  
• Silencer (papers-please-like): Inspired by Papers Please, play as a censor of news articles. Every week new protocols are received, such as “the flag must be displayed correctly”, “only trusted news sources are accepted”, “the leader must not be criticised”, “no mention of donkeys allowed”. You must decide if a news article should be published or censored, following this week’s protocol. While Papers Please was darkly comedic, this feels more like interactive dystopian fiction. At least in this early demo your decisions don’t really seem to matter that much, you get the same sequence of articles regardless of your past decisions, and the only downside of making a wrong decision is that you have to type a sometimes too long apology. The writing is good, though, and fits the current times very well, a good hypothetical scenario of how things can go wrong when a self-interested autocratic government takes over a country.
  
• Spacecaps (sokoban): Another difficult game from Artless (14MV, A=B, Understand). Push crates in space, with no gravity, so orienting yourself is a real challenge. Like all Artless games, it looks very barebones, but the levels are super challenging.
  
• Tessera (jigsaw): Roam around a 3D environment and turn any view you want into a living jigsaw. The jigsaw will reflect the scenery in real time, with hot air balloons floating, the sun setting and rising, waves sloshing. Nice looking as a scenery, and depending on which view you choose, might make a good or bad jigsaw image with varied areas and distinct pieces, or monotonous, homogenous pieces. You can show only the edge pieces, you can sort the remaining pieces in a grid, you can show/hide the target image, but the piece cuts are too simple, so it’s difficult to match pieces based on their cuts, and while sunsets and sunrises are extra helpful, night time is too dark to make out anything.

Bloxolotl is a block moving puzzle in which you move and combine blocks to reach apples, interesting mechanics, good enough levels. Frip and Froop is an action puzzle like Chip’s Challenge, a bit too slow and too frantic at the same time, and the demo levels were rather easy. HexaScape is a more engaging take on Tantrix, place hexagonal pieces with roads, pipes or minerals to form long circuits of each kind, which in turn grants you resources to find an infestation. Quantum Odyssey is a very educational game about quantum computing and quantum algorithms, the real deal and not the quackery that people like to call Quantum. Nice puzzles, nice lessons, but the UI needs improvements, a better tutorial, and hard chapters are introduced too early. SuperPosition is a sokoban in which the level duplicates itself, and you must solve all of the instances. While Waiting is a funny game in which you have to spend time in different scenes, and each one can grant you a few stickers depending on what you do, including “nothing at all”. Nice little point&click puzzles, some challenging, some just testing your patience.

Highlighting the best release of last week, at least according to the curator’s opinion.

An artistic minesweeper sometimes with more than one color, flag “mines” of the right color on a canvas to reveal a picture. Classic minesweeper rules, except that clues can be colored. Relaxing and cute. My only dislike is that you must click once more after flagging all the mines around a number to confirm the placed mines.

A platformer that looks and sounds amazing, and prefers to be enjoyed, not to be plowed through. It mixes in a bit of precision, a bit of puzzle, a bit of hidden object, and a bit of metroidvania, and a lot of beautiful music and beautiful scenery.

Nominated for Best Strategy Game for the Thinky Awards, this is one of my favorite games from 2024. Humorous, good looking, lovely characters, great music, a very neat package overall, but the gameplay is what makes it interesting. The fact that it’s turn based allows you to use your brain and plan ahead, ration your moves and attacks to take out as many enemies as possible.

300 Brainrack issues! The format has changed a lot since the first one, back when there were just enough good games on Steam to be able to list all of the ones on sale! I hope it’s still useful, and you’ll keep reading the next hundred editions.

The demo of the week is Bloxpath.

• Balloon Friends (co-op platformer): Another co-op platformer, but this one at least can be played locally with A-D and left-right. Or it should be playable locally, but it doesn’t actually work, after pressing start it just hangs.
  
• Bloxpath (block tumbling): Inspired by Bloxorz, this block tumbling game enhances the formula with weird shapes, asymmetrical multiagents, walls, and other mechanics, in a very nice implementation.
  
• City Of Corals (exploration): Educational game about corals, but very disappointing. “Cute” hand drawn graphics, but it’s 3D, you can’t move the camera, and 2D cutouts floating in a 3D scene means you never know if the thing you need to collect is in front of you, above you, or far away, and tall things like walls often occlude your view of the character. Anyway, in the game you need to collect green algae to restore corals, which gives you access to more areas, which allows you to collect more algae, and so on. Has a little bit of metroidvania to it, but at least in the demo you quickly unlock almost everything. Could be a nice game for kids if the camera wasn’t so bad, the controls were more responsive (half the time jumping doesn’t work), and it was more clear where everything is.
  
• Crystal: Automaton (factory builder): place various machines, connect them with belts, and convert vacuum into sand, glass, copper, and other materials, all so you can expand and build more machinery. The goal is to just make more stuff, very unsatisfactory.
  
• A Directionless Cycle (sokoban): Similar to Sticky Arrow and Bloxolotl, you move all the blocks with an arrow on them that points in the direction you pressed. Levels get challenging pretty quickly, and even in the 3/9 difficulty rating levels I struggled, I wonder what the 9/9 levels look like. No undo, and the timer and move counter make this stressful. The graphics need improvement, hopefully the dev will take the time to polish it.
  
• Eternal Bonds (puzzle platformer): Play as two characters, an astronaut and a robots that must cooperate, freely switching between the two. I’ve seen a few single player co-op platformers before, but here the trick is that they are in different parts of the ship (two different rooms), and you only see one at a time, so you need to keep switching to see what effect pushing a button had in the other room. Funny dialog, decent graphics, needs a bit of QoL and more complex levels than what this very short demo includes. I’m not a fan of not seeing what is going on in the other half of the level, but it’s an interesting choice of mechanic so I respect that.
  
• Exist EXE (sokoban, adventure): Trapped in his own incomplete game, Marcus must find his way through levels by changing the assets’ properties and moving them around, filling in the behavior of undefined tiles, unlocking gates, and exploring, looking for a way to get back to the real world. Adventure, semi-open world exploration, story, seems quite good. It keeps crashing every few minutes for me, but there’s autosave.
  
• Math Muncher (sokoban, merge, math): Push blocks with numbers into each other to merge them, and once you reach a given target, push the block into the target bin. By default the two merged blocks add their values, but later levels introduce operation blocks, like divide by 2, or apply factorial. I can envision some very nice puzzles with these mechanics, hopefully the game won't disappoint.
  
• Project Chameleon (stealth): Equipped with a special suit that allows you to mimic objects like plants, lamps and shelves, carefully time your path across a level full of patrolling bots. What makes it complicated is that some of the bots are on the lookout for certain objects, so if you camouflage as a lamp and a bot suspicious of lamps passes by, it will still detect you. You can also hack into consoles that allow you to reprogram the bots, swapping the object they are suspicious of, which makes it a bit more puzzly. Nice stealth game, but not enough of a puzzle, and it has both too much waiting for the patrolling bots to get in the right formation, and too much haste since you only have a tiny window of opportunity to dash before they turn and spot you.
  
• Rock 'n' Bones (platformer): A puzzle platformer that feels more like a foddian game. You’re a rock that was suddenly made sentient by a witch. You can throw your head, keep moving with the headless body, then teleport your body back to the head. You can’t jump, so the way to get up is to throw the head then teleport to it. Since you’re throwing a rock and barely controlling the force you throw it with, it’s very hard to just put the head where you want it to be, it over or undershoots, it bounces, it falls back down, so progress is very slow, you basically attempt to get up the same ledge over and over. Or maybe you’re great at foddian games, then you may actually enjoy this, but it’s not for me.
  
• Schematic Void (puzzle box): While the previous Schematic game was mostly a logic/deduction puzzle with separate levels, this sequel leans more into out-of-the-box meta puzzling, with funny things to do like zooming into tiny secrets, moving pieces from one level to another, finding secret ways to actually unlock the next level, etc. Fun!
  
• Shinobi Match (match4): A match3 variant, but instead of having to match as many things as possible, you have to actually avoid matching most types. On a grid with lots of types of faces (ninja, samurai, peasant, geisha, noble), you “attack” (eliminate) one or more people depending on the weapon you use, then the people above fall down. If you make a group of 4 or more people of the same type, they get matched away. Every mission has one type of person you must not attack but only match away, and everybody else must be attacked but not matched. You get points added when you attack or match correctly people, points subtracted when you attack or match the wrong people, and the goal is to reach a certain score. It’s nice to see a unique take on the genre, and the implementation is decent enough for a demo. Give it a try if you like match3 games.
  
• Tired to Fall (platformer): Nice puzzle platformer, you’re one of those helicopter seeds that wants to go back up and have a chat with the tree that threw you away. You can walk, jump and glide, but you can’t jump too high, so you must collect and plant your seed brothers to build little leafy platforms. The more seeds you plant in the same spot, the taller they grow, allowing you to reach higher. Figure out where each seed needs to be planted, try to collect the golden acorn, avoid thorns and pitfalls, and reach the mushroom. Nice levels, not too much precision required, a bit puzzly, looks good, recommended as a cozy platformer that doesn’t require speed or precision.
  
• Vanova’s Stories (detective, co-op): I couldn’t play this since it requires a team of 4 players, but even getting to the point of waiting for a team was very buggy.

Click Painter is a decent minesweeper, sometimes with more than one color, but I don’t like that you not only need to mark mines, but also confirm them, so a mistake is counted instantly, but a correct mark requires two clicks. Lacks a few features that speed up the solving process, but if you finished all the other minesweepers and are looking for a new relaxed version, consider picking this up. Mysteries of Perception is a nice detective game, investigate crime scenes at different moments in time and from different people’s perspective, gather clues, then complete sentences on a stringboard. Nice game. SPIN Protocol is a nice take on pipe puzzles, rotate joints to complete circuits, with more advanced mechanics and challenge levels, but it focuses too much on optimizing solutions instead of just solving the levels, and it has a terrible CRT effect with blurry pixels, distorted grid, and random noise . Still, if you ignore the move counters and the stars they unlock, it’s a nice puzzle game. Lore Restore is a cryptogram decoder, you get a short quote but in an alien alphabet, and you must figure out which letter is which. Nice, different difficulty levels, hints, and it feels smooth. I tried the Mineshaft demo a few months ago, and I felt rushed too much by it. Tetris, but instead of trying to make lines, you try to make specific shapes to “craft” tools that help you destroy blocks. More speedy arcade than puzzle, but I appreciate that it takes the Tetris formula into a new direction. Worth checking out if you’re a fan of Tetris. I haven’t tried them yet, but Invertigo seems like a nice Portal variant, Orifoldium looks like a digital version of Rubik’s Snake, and Slide to Solve is a nice concept, reminds me of the recently features short game No! Don’t eat that! and somehow of Klotski. And Hello Kitty is too popular to need an introduction, so I won’t bother, especially since I have no idea what Hello Kitty is.

If you like logic games, Nurikabe, or the logic boxes in Islands of Insight, you’ll like this. It’s a well done Nurikabe-like game, but the rules keep changing. On a grid with some white and black blocks, you must fill in the rest of the grid following the rules. Sometimes you have to avoid groups of 2x2, sometimes you have to avoid 4 or 5 in a row, sometimes you need to make sure all blocks of a color are connected, and more advanced rules keep showing up in each chapter. Decent QoL, looks very nice, my biggest complaint is that it’s done in Unreal Engine, so it’s very GPU hungry.

Highlighting a short and free puzzle game every week!

A variant of the 15-puzzle, but with two layers. It describes itself not as a game, but as a toy, and that’s a very good description, since you’re responsible for shuffling it up too. Just like a smaller 15-puzzle, you have 8 tiles in a 3x3 grid that you can shuffle around, with the goal of getting them back in the right order. However, in four inner corners around the middle piece there are 4 other pieces, which normally move along with the pieces under them, but they are not fixed, they can shift around, and if you don’t pay attention to them, you’ll easily solve the underlying 8-puzzle, only to realize that the 4 upper pieces are in completely wrong positions. I like this, the 15, or in this case the smaller 8-puzzle is much too easy to solve, so the extra layer makes this a new challenge that brings new life to an old puzzle. Works in a browser, even on a phone.

Highlighting another free puzzle game every week!

A challenging game with apparently simple mechanics, you must crack open square geodes into two parts, then collect them. The mechanics are a bit more complex than that, but I won’t spoil them, discovering them on your own is a nice experience. Be warned that it can get very challenging, and often you have to plan a full solution in your head before you can start collecting the geodes. Works in a browser, even on a phone.

A sokoban variant in which you must push sheep to eat all the grass. The presentation is very retro, with 8 bit pixel graphics, chirpy music, and an optional CRT effect for those that really miss the primitive displays of the past. Very difficult puzzles, and it challenges you to beat par scores, although that's an optional torture.

A puzzle-adventure game with a special mechanic, you can rearrange the world as a collection of tiles, changing where you can go from your current position. A lovely game, not too hard but not too easy either, with plenty of aha moments.
