You're probably better off with one of the community maintained versions of SteamOS. There's ChimeraOS[chimeraos.org] and HoloISO[github.com]
ChimerasOS being a fully made "SteamOS like" (But still function almost the same, with the Big Picture interface) operating system which allows for easier customization and all.
While HoloISO is a reverse-engineering of the current SteamOS 3 distribution (The one used on the Steam Deck currently) which wasn't made publicly available to install on other hardware configurations yet, in which this project aims to solve, until Valve does indeed release it, as they planned. This one is still a bit limited by the monolithic format of the distribution.
Since SteamOS does not seem to run from a USB stick like some other Linux distros, I wanted to have a look at it in VMware. Is there another way to get hold of the iso safely?

I got the iso from that link thank you.
Bit of a necro, but do you still have that .iso? The link is not working for me.
I try it today and use balenaEtcher-Portable-1.18.11 to install
