Discussing potential tactical shooter projects

This is a group to gather together a number of players, server admins, and developers, to build a simple tactical shooter that we all want to play. Public feedback is welcome, the idea is to see what we all want to do, and match that up with our skills and time to see if this is even feasible. We will continue to refine the plan and group as we go, and do our best to accomodate enough flexibility for modders to take it further.

Operation: Harsh Doorstop

Hey guys, loooong time no post here, hope everyone is still alive and well.

I recently started working on a project that meets a lot of my goals with this group.

It's called Operation: Harsh Doorstop, it's based on UE4, and it's a free (no microtransactions) tactical shooter that is going to come with several major theaters worth of assets and full mod support, with the goal of fostering community content creation and letting server admins easily make custom gameplay experiences by combining multiple mods with custom rules and scenarios.

I just got linked up with them recently, but I'm working on streamlining the documentation, fleshing out mod support, and building tutorials and example content to get people started.

It's in alpha right now, a lot of missing content and mod support is still in its infancy, but it's coming along with a pretty big community behind it.

If anyone wants to jump into the main Discord server and check it out, we give out keys for playtesters weekly, or Patreon supporters get a permanent key.

First things first

Hello everyone,

Thanks for accepting the invite. I have invited a lot of people who I have worked with or played with over the past few years to this group. I wanted to get everyone's take on what they are looking for, so we can see if this would be a good use of our time. To start with, I'll outline the basic idea I have of what I'd like to create at a high level. Everything here is flexible, the goal is to see what we all agree are the most important things and then use that as the design.

What I am envisioning is a complete new shooter, a basic tactical shooter designed around cooperative online teamplay. I want it to be tactically challenging, require thought and advance planning to play well, and focus on making a challenging but fair game that is a lot of fun.

Community comes first at all times, we build the features that we all like. I want to have it as an open platform for modders to extend.

As a game, it will start off pretty stripped down. I'd like to provide basic weapons handling and stats, a competent squad-aware AI, some basic game modes, and some maps.

The core game starts off simple, and we build all the content as mods. That way, we make sure that all the stuff we do can be modified.

Will likely be on the UE4 engine, with as much open-source and existing content as possible. The marketplace is a great way to publish content, Epic is pretty good to developers.

That's the basics to start with, it's sort of pie in the sky but I wanted to get everyone's take on it first. Feel free to go off on tangents or throw out whatever comes to mind, if we get a lot of interest I'll pare it all out into a wiki later.
