pros and cons (no spoilers) (also pretty long)

pros:

+ graphics are just stellar, you really notice just how much work went into detailing the environment. lighting is also incredibly well done.

+ atmosphere, my god is there atmosphere, the catholic school sections are the most ambient and fear-inducing by far. (there's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ water section so be warned)

+ school sections (just had to add 'em), BY FAR the scariest sections of the game. they not only show off the more high-budget animations/set pieces, but also do a great job at hooking you to the story and making you want to figure the whole thing out on top of explaining the backstory.

+ protagonist, voice actor did a superb job with all of the different sounds, welcome change to Outlast's original mc's, the new one feels alive as he comments on almost everything, you might find yourself saying ''what the ♥♥♥♥'' at the same time.

+ new mechanics such as finding bandages to heal, using the camera's microphone to hear through walls (among other things) and crawling add a lot to the game. navigating through a pitch dark area with only the microphone to aid you is creepy as all hell

+ chase sequences are thrilling and filled with stress, getting through one without dying and then noticing how fast your heart's beating is really fun.

cons: (oh boy are there cons)

- plot, the story is pretty straightforward with some ''twists'', much of the backstory is found by reading the edgy notes left around the game. ending can confuse the hell out of you unless you remember certain bits of info from the first game. not really memorable and overall a letdown with the way it was set up.

- shock value, the game has some moments that feel like they exist purely to make you go ''the ♥♥♥♥'' which is fine in itself, but when it keeps happening the overall value drops like the currency in post-WW2 Germany

- enemies, there are a few types of enemies, farmers, scalled, Martha and a *ghost*. there's enough variety here for it not to feel cheap, but while there is variety in the enemy types, there isn't much in the way they act.
the A.I is much more intelligent than the one in the original Outlast, trying to juke or run past enemies will almost always result in getting hit, what makes matters worse is that they eventually home in on you, no matter where you're hiding.

whilst the first game was more focused on hiding and sneaking past the enemy, this game forces you to run more than you've done IRL but with the stamina of a fat neckbeard living in his mom's basement. having your character stop and breathe buckets of air in and out for several seconds feels out of place in a game where you do this much running

- difficulty, alright so the higher difficulties don't really add anything to the game, rather I feel like they detract. what happens is that you either die from that one enemy who decided to turn his aimbot on, or have to run around on a treasure hunt looking for batteries.

- trial & error, by far my biggest gripe with the game, figuring out which way is the ''correct'' one by dying kills the scary ambience the game builds up so well. what's worse is that this problem remains in many chase sequences, take the wrong turn and you'll end up stuck in a dead-end face-to-face with the ones chasing you as you wait for the them to kill you. don't think I have to go on about how this sucks.

- length, the game is about 6-8 hours long depending on how fast you get through areas or if you repeatedly die. there isn't much off-time where you can chill, but there are definitely sections that drag on for too long. would probably have been better with a shorter but more tightly packed game that keeps ramping the anxiety and stress up, keeping you on your toes.

VERDICT: if you're a horror enthusiast like me, you kinda have to pick this up. waiting for the price to drop around ~€20 wouldn't be that stupid either. solid 7/10 experience.
