The actual racing is pretty fun. It scratches an itch for a great fast-paced arcade racer.

But the cost. Progression after the first couple weeks is measured in months and years, not weeks and months. Everything is paywalled. If you want a maxed out event car, you're paying $500 or more.

If you're cool with playing with the base game cars you could even be relatively competitive in multiplayer after a few weeks, since skill is actually important too. The multiplayer is surprisingly not bad for a game of this nature and it's the only reason I play it. Eventually though you'll hit a wall where you can't compete anymore without spending, again, like $500 dude. BUT wherever you do end up, the races will be mostly competitive.

The state of the game is a pretty big shame since the base game has really strong roots. I don't know what Gameloft is thinking about the pricing model, but honestly their executives are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idiots lmao.

If you're a fan of fantasy stories, Metaphor has a really cool setting and lore. Very excited to see where the story goes, I can only see it getting better! Considering it is an Atlus game, I can only imagine the ending will be thrilling and satisfying.

If I feel like the game takes a negative turn, I'll update my review. But for now I'm hyped and you should be too!

If you're playing on Steam Deck or with a controller, make sure to change your controller settings to be "Gamepad" rather than WASD (which is the default, for some reason).

Recommended just for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, which is one of the best games in the series, and has the best music of the two trilogies.

Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice should never have been made, but the DLC chapter for Spirit of Justice is excellent too. The music in Spirit of Justice is also good, but it doesn't make up for the weak story and characters.

Early Access Review
Cool idea but buggy. Loaded up a save inside the apartment of the victim of the default case and I was suddenly being chased by "Enforcers". I didn't really even have a chance to look around the apartment. This is the first case of the game. That's a huge red flag for me about what might happen later if I keep playing, so I'm going to put the game down for now and try it again after the full release. Really cool idea though.

I can only recommend this DLC to a point, and largely only because of the price. Make no mistake, the premise and execution of the first half of the game is a feat that I could expect only from Torpor. The first few chapters are some of the best worldbuilding and storywriting I've ever read in a visual novel. The story falls apart almost completely after Turn 7. Turns 9 and 10 are incredibly disappointing and not up to the standards I expect from Torpor's fantastic and capable team.

There are almost no "good" endings (though they do exist) and there are even fewer *satisfying* endings. In most endings, no matter what, something will ♥♥♥♥ you. You could unite the nation, champion the people, massively improve the economy and international standing, overcome every challenge the game builds up throughout the course of the story, and you may still get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in Turn 10 lol. There is almost no granularity.

I hope there is a massive overhaul of the last four chapters -- especially the endings. It's not easy to "end" massively branching narratives like Suzerain and Rizia, but the abruptness and disconnectedness is jarring compared to the incredible writing of the first six chapters.

I'm giving this game a positive review and I suggest you purchase it immediately at full price if you are a fan of the original Suzerain. In fact, get the Supporter's bundle. But: I recommend you wait a year or longer to play it, in case the endings receive an overhaul in the interim.

So far the story is great, even though I'm terrible at the game and will probably get the worst ending.

First case is really good. Definitely a worthy spiritual successor of the Ace Attorney series. Reminds me of Ace Attorney Investigations somewhat.

Will update if my opinion changes later in the game.

Some notes:

* English translation is found under the 2nd button on the main menu, the 4th button on the next menu, and the 3rd item (drop-down box) on the Settings menu.
* The translation is so far fairly good for a small team from China. Plenty of places where the translation could be improved but IIRC the game has something like 800,000 words. Hopefully the team commits a bit more time to improving the translation further, but it is playable at this stage in the game.
* Controller support is 7/10. Sometimes things feel unintuitive. For example, some text uses the left stick to scroll through, and others use the right stick. That said, the controls do the job once you get a hang of them.
* Graphics aren't very buttery. Everything feels stretched at 1440p.
* Really appreciating the insight into the late-Qing era as a Westerner.
* The end of the first case reveals a set up for the greater story. It's very well done, but puts a large expectation on the ending, but other reviews seem to indicate it pays off. I'm excited.

If you purchase this game, I hope you enjoy it as well.

*Turn the brightness down 3-5 notches to improve shadow quality!*

Minus some stuttering, it is possibly the most polished game on release by a major studio in months. Which is great because Atlus famously sucks at patching their games post-release. Still, they deserve some praise for not treating their customers like free beta testers in today's late-stage-gaming industry.

The music is fantastic. I played Persona 5 and 4, which also have great music, and it looks so far like 3 has some bangers as well.

Never played the original so I won't know what I'm missing from the post-game. I also don't know what the original pacing or atmosphere was, which is great because I have nothing to nitpick compared to the first release (though some reviews say the original had a more "spooky" vibe).

edit: post-game dlc is okay but not worth paying extra for
