It's pretty clear by now that this DLC is very buggy, but this does affect the entire game even without the DLC so unless you find a previous version of this game to play you'll have to deal with a complete mess with or without this addon.

Even that though, the content offered in this DLC is quite poor. It has some pretty nice things, such as the new early stages and some of the new skins to unlock do look great, but nearly everything else does not match the quality provided from the previous versions. A lot of the items are pure bloat, being very lackluster in effect and a lot of them pretty un-inspired. The new characters don't feel well thought out, most of them having even more glaring weaknesses compared to the other survivors and they only have 1 alt unlock each. The new alt path progression does not feel great and it's own endgame is imo the most frustrating to complete, the final area is extremely punishing and I feel like you get there way too early - you don't really get a good chance to power up properly unless you loop. Even the more smaller things such as the new Elite mobs introduced honestly made combat pretty frustrating to deal with when they're in play.

I think it's gonna take way more than squashing every bug to turn this around.

I honestly find it pretty crazy that one of the best SMT experiences I've played so far is through a Touhou fan game, but it's a clear love letter to both the dungeon crawling experience and it's source materials throughout. I also believe that you need no knowledge of either SMT or Touhou to fully enjoy the game, it's just a general video game delight to play.

I will mention that it definitely wears the old-school roots loud and proud, so certain UI elements and such will be a bit archaic, and while I don't think the game is too hard (pretty forgiving in many aspects compared to it's contemporaries, honestly) you will be expected to go through some pretty lengthy dungeons with pretty hard dungeon layouts.

Absolutely worth it's full price tag, it's a pretty easy entry point for both mentioned series too. At the very least, definitely check out this game's OST.

I naturally have bigger expectations for higher price point games, and this remake still falls just a bit short of it.

What I liked the most was it's added story beats and refinements of systems taken from the future titles, such as Linked Episodes to flesh out the male party characters, more things to do during day/night time that makes it a bit more easier to do SL/Social Stat grinding, and the overall bump up in the combat mechanics to give a lot of fun options to just grind out encounters.

I didn't like that all the major SL didn't get that much of a touch up of the original, the lighting on the default settings not really making the game look that great in many areas (I recommend -5 or so in the brightness settings to better it a bit) and while all the new additions is nice, I actually do think it's still too much especially with the combat - it gives too much power to the player even on Merciless, and all the additions to spice up Tartarus kind of make it going back to just bloat with the additions and modifiers you can apply during that section of the game. I'm still ultimately of the opinion that Tartarus needs a block cut as I don't think all those floors are that justified to go through.

It's still absolutely a remake worth a playthrough, just maybe not worth it's full price tag.
