Early Access Review
I heard the game was going to retire, and I found it weird since it looked like a fantastic game, so I decided to download and play it, and it was indeed a good one. Sadly, I'm not a big fan of online games anymore, so I only played some matches, no problems so far on here as well.

I had to look it up and see a reason as to why that happened, as I don't believe it was just for a full release or anything of the sort, considering it's a free game and everything. I only found out that they are planning to involve their game with NFTs and crypto. I was going to say some stuff and help out the developers... If there's any good ones with a brain left, but I don't see a reason to do that. The game didn't have that many players, so I can't say they ruined the future of the game as well.

Anyway, if the devs planned to update the game in the future, they pretty much ruined their reputation, as most people don't want to involve themselves with... that. They seem to have plans to migrate to the Epic Store... That's hilarious. They already ruined the game with Easy Anti-Cheat and now this...

It's a shame, honestly, it's a great game. I can see a lot of potential here... Oh well.

I still remember first playing this on Android close to its release, and I’m really glad to see it here. Sadly, it’s not really worth the asking price.

I mean, it’s a nice and fun casual game with a great idea behind it, but not only there isn’t a lot of content, there’s some annoying problems here and there that don’t make it worth the full price...

Well, let’s start with the AI. She only goes after you at the start of each play for a few seconds, after that, she doesn’t really care about you anymore, making everything far too easy. Well, I did say the game was more on the casual side, and considering it’s an instant game over when you die, that’s not really a negative point.

Music and sound effects are the worst. There is no way to change the volume of the music or the sound effects. I don’t see a problem actually, but the music is so loud that I had to turn it off. Sound effects are fine as well, but they are a little dull since they just stop instead of fading in and out.

There’s not much to say honestly and no reason to give a negative review. It’s fun, but it lacks content for you to buy it at full price. You can unlock more maps and skins by buying one of the three DLCs, but they shouldn’t even exist in the first place.

A treasure more valuable than your own blood.

Walking Simulators are famous for the beauty and richness of their worlds, and Deep Beyond is no exception. Even though there are some parts that don't make sense, such as small problems here and there, it stands out more than it should as a walking simulator.

Story

We follow the story of Lilly, a treasure hunter abandoned by her father as a child. She and Howard, her father's best friend who took care of Lilly, are looking for a very valuable chalice... But it seems that some very 'friendly' people are also keeping an eye on this chalice.

Deep Beyond has a story that is a little difficult to understand... Where can I start? Well, the game explains the main topics that you need to know, but it doesn't explain smaller things...

One example would be Howard, is he really just a friend of your father's? Why did he decide to take care of Lilly out of the blue? Has Lilly really become a treasure hunter or is she just helping Howard? I don't want to give away spoilers so I'll stop here, but by the end of the game you're left with more questions than answers.

This has led to the story having a few holes, but nothing that will make you not understand anything. I think they cut out some of the less important parts so they wouldn't have to dub everything, which I can understand, since not everyone has the money to do what they've done here.

Gameplay

Deep Beyond is a Walking Simulator as I said, so there's not much to talk about here. The puzzles in the game are quite unique, but nothing too complicated or challenging.

There's nothing bad to say about the gameplay, apart from the fact that sometimes when you interact with something, Lilly's hand sometimes goes through that object, such as doors, items, etc. Rarely she make items float in her hand as well. This doesn't get in the way at all, but it is quite annoying, especially for a game of this style.

Graphics

I spent a long time looking at the game's screenshots to see if it was really the graphics... The game surprised me, everything is a work of art. The choice of colors here was beautiful, nothing was strange, on the contrary, it was very well balanced. What stood out the most were the clouds and the mountains in the background, all very well done, bringing this world to life.

Each place we visited was more beautiful than the other, they really went the extra mile in this regard. The only thing I found strange was how some characters who don't have mouths try to speak, as well as having expressions that I don't think they should have... Well, that's better than not having them, but it's a bit strange still.

Audio

The music and sound effects were remarkable as well. Nothing surprising, but it made everything much more enjoyable. The music is played when we are involved in tense or important moments, such as puzzles or more tense situations related to the story. This made each place much more unique and striking, instead of being played all the time throughout the game, making everything tedious.

The sound effects matched the location perfectly. As I said, nothing surprising, but it brought each place we visited to life.

Verdict

There's no denying that the developers have done a great job with the game. Even with its problems, Deep Beyond is a work of art with a beautiful world, rich in detail. It's very short, as you can complete it in 1 hour, but it's a good game for a Walking Simulator, well worth the price.

Score:
8.5

Strong Points:

+ Simple, but different and unique puzzles.
+ Graphics is a masterpiece.
+ Each place you visit is rich in detail.
+ Striking music with good sound effects.

Weak Points:

- Confusing story with little explanation.
- Lilly's hands go through some items.

Here's a gameplay video of the game if you want to take a look:

Ugly Turkeys Everywhere!

We're finally at the time when indie games take inspiration from each other... Well, Don't Starve is no longer an indie game, but it once was. Lesson Learned is one of those games that I didn't know I needed, since I love this idea of collecting resources in the style of DS with Tower Defense.

This review was submitted for Arcane Burajiru™

Analise em Português aqui.

Story

You and your classmates are teleported to another world, where you must survive by building defenses and defeating monsters.

It's a pretty simple story, but considering that Lesson Learned is a game more focused (or so it seems) on co-op, you can put that aside. I'm not sure, but it seems that there will be a focus on the story if you choose to play alone...?

Well, there's not much to talk about since it's only the prologue, but I hope there's something to it, since even though it's simple, it appeals to me a little.

Gameplay

Collect resources and build small towers to defeat the waves of monsters. You can use your slingshot to stun the monsters, sometimes the enemies drop fire “potions” that damage the enemies.

Well... There are quite a few things I didn't like about the gameplay, but let's talk about what I think really gets in the way...

Something I noticed after reaching the last stage was that chopping wood is almost pointless. It takes a VERY long time to cut down a tree, leading to the fact that the time for the next wave of enemies to start is very short... At the end of the day, it's easier to take the wood that's already on the ground and have your 'servant' cut down the trees instead of yourself.

Speaking about him, I find it quite annoying how it follows us around instead of collecting resources... I can understand him following us when we ask him to build something, but sometimes he's collecting wood and out of nowhere he starts following us.

Considering the situation we're in, it makes more sense that when he's finished with one task he'd start another random one instead of following us around... This is random for me to say, but why is it so easy to get stone???

I'm not sure if this is already in the game, but it would be interesting if it had a small boost when you walk on a road, compared to walking on grass... The same could apply when you're carrying wood, since stone is really heavy and it would make sense to us to walk slow while carrying it.

The tutorial seems to have forgotten to mention that you can destroy your buildings to get the resources you spent on them. I thought at first that if you destroyed them you'd lose everything...

Graphics

What stands out the most is the similar style of Don't Starve. It's not identical, but it's very elegant with a unique style. Something that is also beautiful was the environment, it's very well built, nothing similar to the previous stages, even if the layout is a bit simple.

Something strange I noticed was that some objects collide, something normal of course, but items like wood, stones or small things in general shouldn't collide with us in my opinion.

Speaking of which, there could be items hidden in the corners of the map that give a damage or speed bonus throughout the match, I think that would be interesting...

Enemies are very unique and beautifully ugly. I find it a bit strange how the enemy that destroys your buildings only takes damage when it's close to your base...

Audio

Something that usually goes unnoticed by me. Both the sound effects and the music didn't really stand out, but they went very well with the game as a whole. There's not much to talk about in terms of the music since there only seems to be 1...?

The sound effects also seem to be somewhat inspired by DS, doing a good job of taking inspiration rather than copying. Speaking of which, the sound effects of birds, ocean waves, etc. were lacking in here.

The only thing I really hated was the fact that the sound in general was too loud. I always set the volume on my computer to 40%, but it was still so loud that it hurt my ears. Turning it down a bit has improved it, but I don't think it should be that loud...

Verdict

I can't give an exact opinion of the game with this prologue, but at the moment everything is perfect, almost too perfect. I really liked the idea of collecting resources and building up your defenses. From the looks of it, you can also improve your towers, which makes everything a little more interesting. I hope this also applies to the characters.

Score:
7.2

Strong Points:

+ A simple story that could turn to be very interesting later.
+ A unique idea with good gameplay.
+ Beautiful graphics inspired by Don't Starve.
+ Simple, but great sound effects and music.

Weak Points:

- It's quite tedious to collect resources.
- Our colleague follow us around instead of collecting resources.
- The default sound volume is louder than it should be.

Hot succubus slicing up ugly zombies.

I've recently been addicted to roguelikes, I really like how everything is randomly generated, a simple mistake can make you lose everything you've achieved so far. I was therefore very interested in Rogue Girl.

I don't know why, but it has the style of Yet Another Zombie Defense, one that I really enjoyed to the point of getting all the achievements. The game looks good on the surface, but unfortunately it disappointed me a little, I really wanted to like it, but it's difficult... But even so, I'll leave this review on a positive note, so if you're too lazy to read, you can skip to the conclusion.

The developer has updated the game, and I'm lazy as heck to update some parts of the review, so jump to the conclusion/verdict for more info.

Story

There isn't really a story in here. You're a demon girl who's been summoned by someone(?) to face hordes of zombies.

Gameplay

This is where most of the problems I hated about the game lie. The movement is bad... I could stop here and move on to the next topic, but I'll tell you in a bit of detail why I thought it was bad...

You stand still while you attack, you can't move. This is bad because the zombies don't stop for anything, you attack them with a huge ass sword, but there's no impact. There is a sequence of attacks, but it's pretty useless since it doesn't deal any extra damage, and considering all this with the fact that healing is rare, there's no reason to use it. You attack and retreat the whole game.

You can dodge, but I feel it's very poorly done for several reasons. You have no way of controlling exactly which direction you're going to dodge, since your character doesn't follow the mouse cursor, he's loose all the time, so she dodges in the same direction as you attack.

This doesn't change, if you dodge once and keep dodging, it will keep going in the same direction, you have to stop for a second for it to return to normal, so you can choose which direction she will dodge.

There are times when the dodge is repeated twice, I usually clicked twice as there seemed to be a delay every time I tried to dodge so that can be overlooked, but this shouldn't happen. The only use I've noticed is when you're surrounded by enemies, since you don't take damage when you roll.

The enemies in the game are very simple, they go after you and attack when they're close, there's no variation or impact when you attack or are attacked. Another big reason why dodging is useless in the middle of combat is that you can attack from a distance and run. This doesn't work with fast enemies like zombie dogs, so with them you'll always lose a bit of life.

I don't think the skills help that much, except for those that increase damage, recover life. I didn't really notice much change like the abilities to increase stamina, attack speed, etc. There was a big lack of a merchant who sells items, healing potions that you could use in the middle of battle, or other little things.

Graphics

One of the reasons I was so interested in Rogue Girl. I really liked the theme of the environment and the atmosphere itself. It's not well constructed since even in different rooms, everything looks very much the same, but it was something I really liked. The medieval theme was what stood out for me.

There was an attempt to make the environment unique and different, but it all seems very generic. There could have been special rooms where there were piles of zombie corpses or a place where someone was trying to summon a demon, or something like that to make everything less bland.

There's not much to say about the animation or the enemies. What was a little disappointing was the demon girl's lack of expression, something that doesn't have much priority, but could have been improved.

Audio

The audio was something I wanted to stand out together with the graphics, but unfortunately it didn't shine as much as I'd hoped. Does it match? Quite a lot, but it's not something that enhances or makes the game better. The music and sound effects are pretty standard, they don't stand out, but they did their job well.

Verdict

You know, even though I said bad things in most of my review, I had a lot of fun, I really liked the theme, as well as the cute demon girl. It's not one of the best games I've played this year, but it's very promising, if the developer puts a bit of effort into it, I can see a great game being made here, so I'll leave a positive review hoping for the best.

Improving the movement, the attack style and making the girl follow the cursor would improve the game a lot. I hope this doesn't happen, but if I come back here after a year and it's the same, I'll have to change my review to negative.

04/27/24: The game has been updated and it feels several times better than last time. Not just the dodge mechanic, but the movement as well, feels more fluid and not as rough as before. I have changed the score from 4.2 to 5 because of these changes. I can now recommend it if you want a fun, but casual roguelite with 1-2 hours of content.

Score:
5

Strong Points:

+ Well-built environment.
+ Decent music that matches the game.
+ Achievements.
+ Cute demon girl :3

Weak Points:

- Strange and tedious movement.
- No impact in combat.
- Generic enemies with generic animation.
- Skills don't seem to help as much as they should.
- Finding a healing potion is very rare, making it almost impossible to move on.

Note: Some positive points do not affect the final score. Some have been placed here because they are not very important/necessary themselves.

Note²: The review has been translated from my original review written in Portuguese (Brazil). Even though I did my best to correct and convert some slangs used, I'm sorry if something looks sloppy or amiss.

Banging a Demon... For Research Purposes of course!

Something that intrigues me is how this little elf creates one of the best excuses for wanting to have "some fun" with a demon... Science? Studies? Pfft, all excuses!

She could well win an Oscar for her performance... Anyway, we have a nice erotic hidden-gem in our hands.

Story

Evi is a student at the University of Magical Arts. She recently found out about a disciplinary experiment related to summoning beings from another world. Discovering that this experiment has been suspended, she decides to explore the abandoned laboratory complex used for such studies and find out more about it.

It starts with a simple story... Like any erotic game, it's a little confusing if you pay attention to the introduction the game offers, but I see this as something necessary to expand it later on, since in the past the tale was something much simpler and easier to understand.

At the moment, I haven't seen any problems with the story in terms of errors or anything that doesn't make sense. There's not much else to talk about, since it's clear that the focus here is the adult content, as well as the puzzles. It will be a pleasant surprise to see an expansion of the story later on though.

Gameplay

The main focus is on exploring the laboratory complex and solving the puzzles, as well as being rewarded with sexy outfits and different positions that you can use with the demons to mate.

Everything is very well done. The puzzles are simple but well elaborated, the environment is very well constructed, nothing repetitive or that makes you feel empty in the place, but the place itself is very confusing at many times... I think that for most of the game I was lost in what to do rather than solving puzzles.

Right after you've had a good time with the devil, Evi tells you that she needs to find a explanation, but she doesn't say exactly what to do, I only found out that you have to mate with the demon again, but even after that, there's not even a hint that something has opened or changed, not even a sound effect.

I spent a good part of the game exploring all the places, which are quite big, trying to figure out what I should do next. It shouldn't be too easy in this aspect, but there could be a sound when you clear a place or complete something as a hint.

I don't really like how you have to hold down Shift for Evi to walk, I can understand it in games like Half-Life 1, but here it doesn't make much sense to me and feels weird. It would be better if it was a click to switch between each one, or at least an option to do so.

Speaking of which, the movement is great. I remember before it was quite strange, where Evi slid around a lot, but now it seems they've adjusted it a bit... I prefer the old one, since this one isn't as good. Before, she turned to one side or the other in a very unique and realistic way, but she also slid so much that she looked like she was walking on ice.

Graphics

What stands out most in many games, this is no exception here. Let's forget about the lighting or atmosphere for a moment and talk about the models, since that was something that really stood out for me. They are so well done and really suit the realistic atmosphere, even though they have a different style. I just loved how unique Evi looks, as well as the demons.

Another thing they've done well is the atmosphere, it really does feel like it all belongs to a magical institution, there could be more unique things, maybe a few things inspired by Harry Potter? But everything is perfect as it is.

The environment is very well constructed, there are some similar things here and there like the bookshelves, but some you notice have books in different orders, some open, others of a different color, etc. A great job, giving the place a bit more life and variation.

Audio

There's not much to talk about here, I only noticed one piece of music in the game, it's good and does its job well. It goes perfectly with the ambient sounds of the place we're in, an unknown place, but full of mystery.

Personal Study has voice acting in the intro, which is perfect. The rest of the game doesn't have more at the moment, which I honestly don't mind, but it would be another pleasant surprise to see more in some scenes.

Verdict

Personal Study does a great job of mixing erotic content with puzzles and an environment full of details. In terms of adult content, it has great potential because you can use different poses, as well as partners of different sexes. Everything becomes perfect with the high-quality animations.

Score:
8.6

Strong Points:

+ A captivating and unique story.
+ Simple but well-crafted puzzles.
+ A richly detailed environment.
+ Excellent sound effects and voice acting.
+ Evi :3

Weak Points:

+ Strange and unrealistic movement.
+ There are no hints or sound effects showing what to do next.
+ No achievements :(

Note: Some strong/weak points do not affect the final score. Some have been placed here because they are not very important/necessary themselves.

Note²: The review has been translated from my original review written in Portuguese (Brazil). Even though I did my best to correct and convert some slangs used, I'm sorry if something looks sloppy or amiss.

As with all reviews, this is my opinion on what I thought of the game. If you find it interesting, I recommend you buy and play it to see if it's worth it or not youself.

Eldrich Gods to Plants with Human heads... This house is full of surprises!

I'm always delighted to see more horror games being made available on Steam. One that really appeals because of its intimidating, but very charming art style.

A pleasant surprise to see the level of customization the game has, considering that most games made in the Ren'py engine don't go that far. Another pleasant surprise would be to see an erotic publisher publish something outside their area of "pleasure". *wink wink*

Jokes aside, I think it's fantastic what they've done, and I hope they keep doing it, because if it wasn't for them, I'd probably never discover this hidden-gem.

Story

We follow the story of Wickeina Gestalt where she has just moved into her new house that belonged to an elderly woman who recently passed away. Unfortunately, it's not a house like any other, the house is haunted by ghosts, or in Wicke's words, something much older than ghosts.

Thus we observe Wicke's day-to-day life in her new home and what she faces before and after arriving home from her job, which she hates. But she only has five days before a powerful entity arrives.

The mere fact that we can witness the horrors that this supposedly haunted house will offer us already caught my attention. I really liked the way the story is told, there are parts that don't really explain what it is or why it's happening, but I think that's part of the charm of the game itself.

What I liked most was how the days are separated, on the first we have the opportunity to explore the house, then on the second we are introduced to the entities that reside there. This only continues until the fourth day, since the fifth day we face the great 'insect' that has come to cleanse our house of the evil infesting it.

The fact that you have three days to experience everything the house has to offer is quite striking, especially when you realize that each day there are three events, which are randomized for each game. It's a well-written and enjoyable story, with a bit of humor in certain parts, such as Emma's scenario, which gives the story a nice variation.

Gameplay

Each day you have objectives to accomplish in the game, most of which will be to find items for rituals or to defeat the entities of the house, while in others you have puzzles to solve.

In some scenarios you'll have to think carefully about which path to take before the entity gets strong enough to kick you out of the house for a day. Other scenarios only have a time limit until the monster finds you... Or you become one.

Puzzles also are featured heavily in the game, and they're very good by the way, not easy, but not difficult either. I'm usually terrible at puzzles, I can stay solving a simple puzzle for an hour, but I find that some puzzles don't make much sense...

I don't want to give away spoilers, but... I can't see the connection between something that hates rats and a piece of salmon, it might be due to the language barrier, since riddles are used between the puzzles, and I'm not so used to some English words.

There are other parts where the puzzle tries to confuse you, such as the codes in the Eternity scenario where one code has the number one, and the other the number two, making you confuse which order to put it in.

It would be better to have a drawing of where you found the codes, instead of numbers that can be confusing at the time. As I've already said, I'm pretty bad at puzzles, so in the end it doesn't feel like a big deal.

Graphics

What attracted me the most was the graphics, as always. It has this strangeness that makes you feel uneasy at every moment of the game, you really don't know what to expect as the game goes on. Both the artwork and the little jumpscares left a very terrifying and surreal atmosphere while playing.

The worst thing is that at certain times the game doesn't scare you right away, most of it is very predictable and you don't get scared, but at other times everything is perfect, as if you were really there.

The entities are very well done actually, nothing very creative to the point of being close to the creativity of Junji-Ito or similar, but they give a great charm to everything around, something expected to see in that house, rather. I thought it was nice that there was a small reference to The Mandela Catalogue in one of the scenes as well.

Audio

What disappointed me most was the fact that the music didn't stand out a lot at all in the game. This can be ignored, since silence is what makes the house so morbid. The ones that are in the game are good and do their job well. What was disappointing was that there were plenty of opportunities for some eerie music. I really liked Henry Hall's radio theme, it was just perfect!

What really stands out are the sound effects. What I loved most is that many of them don't scare you, but give you a disgusting discomfort. Every time an entity appeared, I felt like there was a something stroking my back, I always had to look behind me to be sure haha.

Verdict

The aim here is not to scare you, but to make you feel uncomfortable. Everything is perfect, the artwork is a little strange, but it's very angelic. The puzzles are a bit confusing, but in a way they're well thought out. It doesn't have a fantastic story, but it's a very interesting and well-written one.

I only noticed 2 small words that seem to be incomplete, but apart from that everything is well formed. A good purchase if you want to have a companion in the back of your head while you play. It's nice that the game has Easter eggs, but it's a shame they're not very active in the game.

If you're going to read everything the game has to offer, you'll spend a good few hours playing, maybe 5-6 hours. If you're going to complete the game, it might take a little longer. A fair price for the amount of content it has to offer, at least on my coin (BRL).

Score:
7.5

Strong Points:

+ Attractive and well-written story.
+ Characters like Emma are very charismatic.
+ Random events each day.
+ Art makes the game what it is.
+ Bizarre and disturbing sound effects.
+ Achievements :)
+ Emma
+ The uncle that gives hints is very charismatic :p

Weak Points:

- Very well-done puzzles, but confusing.
- No hints in the sigils puzzle on Emma's Scenario
- Lack of music in certain parts that should have it.
- Some achievements seem to be a bit buggy.
- Small bug where Emma returns to the living room if her dialogs are exhausted.

Note: Some positive/negative points do not affect the final grade. Some have been placed here because they are not very important/necessary in themselves.

Note²: The review has been translated from my original review written in Portuguese (Brazil). Even though I did my best to correct and convert some slangs used, I'm sorry if something looks sloppy or amiss.

Some not important parts where removed from the review, since I couldn't post everything...

04/16/24: There seems to be a random bug where it erases all your achievements, so if you're just going to buy it for them, it's better to wait for them to fix it.

As with all reviews, this is my opinion on what I thought of the game. If you find it interesting, I recommend you buy and play it to see if it's worth it or not.

Save HomeMotherLand from the devils or whatever those thing are.

Homeland is a very charming game that stands out a lot. You can see the attention to detail, both in the little secrets behind the walls and in how many guts are going to fly out of the corpses.

I can say that this is one of the best platform games I've ever played, it mixes DOOM-style combat with platform elements very well. The only thing that spoils it would be the Knockback, if a monster hits you, you hit the moon in seconds.

Story

There is no correct explanation within the game, but you can understand that you, your girlfriend and your best friend decide to go out clubbing(?), when you get there you are attacked by strangers, your best friend dies while your girlfriend is kidnapped. After confronting the kidnapper, you discover that your girlfriend is very important and the world you live in is no longer the same...

A simple story, but one that fits perfectly here. I normally complain about the lack of explanation within the game, but in here it makes perfect sense, the world has been invaded by demons or whatever they are, so there would be no way of explaining exactly why all this is happening.

Gameplay

Homeland is more of a metroidvania than a platformer, and you realize this when you defeat the first boss and start exploring the world, realizing how rich in detail everything is. Lots of secrets to discover, as well as kittens to collect.

I recommend using a controller, as movement is only done using the keyboard, but you'll be able to play the game just fine using the keyboard, it's all a matter of getting used to the controls, as well as the combat.

I say this because some of the monsters are quite unique, having different ways of attacking, but fortunately many of them are easy to get used to and get the hang of. The bosses are also very easy to get used to, and you may not die more than three times.

It's strange how I spend 16 minutes trying to get past a place where there are several small platforms, but the boss doesn't even last 5 minutes lol.

Apart from a few minor problems I encountered, such as the first boss disappearing or the shotgun bullets sometimes disappearing when you go to another stage, the game has almost no defects. The only 'problem' that bothered me throughout the game was the Knockback.

I had to go back a few times because of it, as I always fell off a platform, boat or elevator because of the Knockback. A devil attacks you and you fly to the moon, it doesn't get in the way to the point of being unplayable, but you will lose a lot of time with it.

Graphics

What stands out the most are the pixelated graphics. You get the feeling that you're in a real world, rather than something that's been created for a game - the attention to detail here has gone a long way. Every place you visit has a heavy atmosphere, forcing even more tension into the place, even though the graphics don't help much in the immersion.

The world is very well constructed, you really feel like you're in a post-apocalyptic place. The pixelated graphics are well done, as are the enemies, each of which has a different fighting style; I can say that at the moment I haven't seen anything reused or similar between the enemies.

Audio

Another one that really stands out apart from the graphics is the beautiful music and sound effects, which really help to maintain the mood of the environment or against the bosses. I never really notice the music while I'm playing, but in many parts of the game I did, because at times there's that calm before the storm.

The ones that attract your attention the most are the suspenseful, fast-paced ones, which set the mood nicely when you're facing multiple enemies or bosses. Talking about the music, it's a shame there's no soundtrack available on the game's page, maybe someone can extract it since the game was made in Pixel Game Maker MV.

Verdict

Homeland offers more than it should, showing how every game should be in terms of atmosphere, world-building and enemies. It's nothing fantastic, but for the price it offers, it's gone to infinity and beyond! If you like metroidvania or platform games, it's well worth putting on your radar.

Now... The price is very generous on my coin (BRL), even at full price. It depends heavily if it's worth it or not for you. The dev said it has 2.5h of content, but so far I think I'm not even close to finishing it. If you are the type of $1 for 1 hour, then it's better to wait for a promotion. I'II update this when I complete the game.

Score:
8.2/10

Strong Points:

+ The world is rich in details.
+ Satisfying pixelated graphics.
+ All of the enemies/bosses are unique in combat.
+ Music and sound effects are essential to the game.
+ Kittens :)

Weak Points:

- Exaggerated knockback.
- Movement is a bit awkwardly.
- No achievements :(
- There are no save slots.

Note: Negative points do not affect the final score. Some have been placed here because they are not very important/necessary themselves.

As with all reviews, this is my opinion on what I thought of the game. If you find it interesting, I recommend you buy and play it to see if it's worth it or not.

From cyber security to criminal fugitive.

I always find it difficult to recommend a game from an unknown developer. This being DragonFire Studios first game, it does very well, much better than expected. Even though the graphics are perfect and the story is very intriguing, you can see how amateurish the game is at times.

I don't mean that in a negative way, I'm just saying that the game has that feeling that it was made by someone who was trying to do something good, but at certain moments did the opposite. Fortunately not to the point of making the game unplayable, but just with that strange feeling...

Story

We are abruptly introduced to Ian Newfield, a cybersecurity engineer working for Daikon Industries. After some explanations, we discover that someone has leaked important company data onto the Dark Web. The data is so important that many powerful companies and entities are interested.

We're back to a week ago, when the leak happened. Your boss tells you to find out who inside the company leaked the data. Ian must then solve this major problem that could put his life at risk, while trying to help his sister who is ill in hospital.

A well-crafted story, but one that seems confusing and simple. I don't want to go into detail and give away spoilers, but in a few times, a lot of things don't make sense, something you can ignore. NetGhost goes to great lengths to make a story that wins you over, but the more you read, the simpler it seems.

At first you have your doubts, but with a few hints that appear throughout the game, your doubts start to become truths, making everything very predictable.

Even with all this in mind, NetGhost is very profound in terms of story, even ignoring parts where everything is explained in the smallest detail, done just to make the reading longer, since it's not important to the story itself.

Gameplay

There's not much to say about the gameplay of a visual novel. One thing I didn't like was how everything was very separate. NetGhost was made in the Ren'py engine, so I'm normally used to a few shortcuts, but it seems that everything has been modified.

Not much has changed, but the most annoying thing is that you can't go back to the previous text by scrolling the mouse wheel. The rest can be ignored.

Graphics

What stands out most in visual novels are the graphics, and there is no exception here. Even though a lot of the game's art is very attractive, this is to be expected from a game of this price, so there's not much to talk about.

The best thing here would be the backgrounds, which have a quality almost better than many large games, being very well detailed with a quality above what is expected for a first game from an unknown developer, well done of a job if I must say.

Audio

It has some decent music that goes well with the style of the game, but the ones that stand out the most are the suspense/action songs, which are very well done by the way. One of my favorites would be the nightclub one, which I might download later haha. The rest are here and do their job well, they're good, but they don't stand out too much.

Sound effects are used throughout the game, helping immersion as well as hindering it. Many effects are strange and don't match the place we're in. A good example would be at the beginning of the game, we're on an avenue in front of Daikon Industries, and instead of hearing cars passing by, you feel like you're stuck in a room with a bunch of people talking right at your ear.

Verdict

Being DragonFire Studios first game, they've done a phenomenal job, better than they should have, in fact. Even after 5 hours, I still haven't managed to finish the game, and it feels like I'm not even halfway through. If need be, I'll update this review as soon as I've finished the game.

It's well worth it if you enjoy a long, well-constructed story and beautiful graphics. Even if you still have your doubts, there's a demo on the developer's website with 3 hours of content, as well as some videos on Youtube...

Score:
8/10

Strong Points:

+ A great, compelling story.
+ Beautiful graphics for a 'small' game.
+ Charming, well-crafted music.

Weak Points:

- Not important stuff being described in detail.
- Strange sound effects that don't match the environment.

As with all reviews, this is my opinion on what I thought of the game. If you find it interesting, I recommend you buy and play it to see if it's worth it or not... You can also download the demo, that's up to you.

English review here.
