Early Access Review
it's good for now very fun, the voice acting is a bit clunky and the sounds sometimes cuts out instead of fading away naturaly but it's very fun

the only thing this game has going for it is it's hand drawn style. repetitive rooms and uninteresting gameplay modifiers the cult of the lamb is not a good roguelike. it's stand out feature, the base building, is not stelar either. although a diagonal look into base building can be better for style it is horrible in a gameplay perspective. and it's gameplay is also not that interesting either. having less than 50 gameplay modifiers really hurts the replayability of the game just like it's small ammount of usable weapons. it ends up feeling like this game was made by amateur game makers and professional artists. for a devolver digital game it feels incredibly underwelming

Hard and fun, challenging and enjoyable, these are the words I’d use to describe blasphemous

Blasphemous is a game that I picked up after vaguely remembering its name from a video on youtube. It caught my attention due to its strange font and unique art style which made me think the game would be filled with creative monster design and even better bosses. It did not disappoint.

In its purest form blasphemous is a metroidvania with souls-like elements like dodging and parrying not mentioning the fact that the penitent one is also a swordsman with several possible magical attacks at his disposal later. Like other souls-like games the main appeal of this game is its gameplay, that being the combat, the platforming and sometimes, the combination of both. Combat feels tight and the more you upgrade the penitent one’s attacks and combos the better it feels, like getting a dashing attack that not only damages enemies but also extend the length of your dashes and can be used to cover longer distances, or the combo finishers that, if used at the correct timing, can deal tons of damage to tankier enemies and bosses.

Talking about combat, the penitent one carries a sword which he can swing, but he can use the sword for other things other than killing, for example, did you know that a parry can negate all the damage from attacks coming from the penitent one’s front? Getting the timing of such a move can be tricky but it can also allow you to perform a punish which deals more damage than a normal sword strike, parrying can also be the easiest way to defeat certain enemies and make you look 100% cooler while doing it. For example, there is a boss near the end of the game that has one of the fastest attacks in the game that being a front facing stab that covers the entire screen, it took me a good hour before I started to get close to beating it due to me believing that the only way to block that attack was through parrying it, I was wrong, you can just duck under it. After acquiring this knowledge did I start to duck under that attack? No, because that would be a lot less cool, I didn’t spend 3 hours perfecting the parry timing for nothing. I beat that boss and you better believe I looked awesome while doing it.

Speaking of bosses, blasphemous has several, and each feels extremely different from one another although they can feel derivative when compared to other game’s bosses, they are unique within each other and stand on their own legs when compared. These range from hands and a head that attack you with bullet hell, a tree that has gained consciousness and three sisters that make their arena rise as you fight them, and those are only the first three bosses, the others are much more creative and much harder so good luck out there.

When you finish the game, you might ask yourself if there’s replay value to it, there is, the game has two endings depending on stuff you do and they are drastically different, another thing you can do if you have the stir of dawn dlc is restart the game with all of your beads prayers and knots and add a penitence to carry throughout the game. These make the game much harder but also make the game much more fun to replay. Other things to do might be finding all the secrets the game has which there are plenty like collectibles secret rooms that lead to extra content and quests that you might have missed or failed.

Blasphemous is an amazing game that nails all the basics of a metroidvania while also being refreshing and stylish. I urge you to try it out for yourself by downloading the demo the game offers, you won’t regret it.

after having always read about this game i came to this expecting a past gem like older mario games or arcade behemoths. i can say that this game has far succeded my expectations and beyond all given me a whole lot of fun. This may be because of my infantile brain but some places where confusing and i felt lost on some puzzles. Definetly an experience i'd recomend my friends play.
9/10
