A great game, plagued with one of the worst communities I have ever seen.

Dead by Daylight is a 4v1 asymmetrical horror game balanced around 4 people working together to escape from a killer. If you have a full party of friends you'll most likely have a good time. Playing solo however, or even with a party of 2 or 3 tends to be very painful. People have some issues with the balancing but that's always the case for competitive games like this, the bigger issue is the mentality a lot of people have. Dead by Daylight has a huge problem with people ragequitting or intentionally killing themselves. In a team game that requires people to work together towards a common goal having one person give up makes it extremely difficult, having two or more makes it near impossible.

I have an average of 0.5DCs per game; that's one person rage quitting every other game. Sometimes I get a streak with friendly players who try their best but then the next game I'll have two people give up immediately because they don't like the killer we're against. Compared to a game like League of Legends, notorious for its playerbase, DBD has been far worse to me in that regard. Sure, people give up quickly in League too but they'll usually stick around for 15 minutes at least to attempt an early surrender vote and by that time you might have started to turn the game around and made them change their mind. In DBD quitting the game prematurely has very little consequence, you can't queue up for a minute or two and you derank. But if you had already given up and thought the game was lost you'd have deranked anyway and lost more of your time so sadly a lot of people leave if everything doesn't go their way. And the people who stick around lose even more of their time and likely derank themselves unless the killer takes pity on them and leaves them be which defeats the whole purpose of the game.

Playing killer isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, but it's had a history of being underpowered and good survivors used to bully killers endlessly with strong perks and items. The fact that the balancing team made killers a bit stronger is probably why there are so many entitled survivors who give up immediately if they can't bully the killer like they used to.

I won't say that the balancing is perfect, I think a lot of the strongest perks and addons/items could be nerfed on both sides and there is a huge gap in terms of viability in the killer roster... That said, I think it's a lot better than it used to be and the devs do make an effort to keeping the game as fair as possible. Recently they added a much more descriptive HUD which shows what your teammates are doing, evening the playingfield slightly between full premade groups of friends and solo players. There are still improvements to be made, a ping system could be a huge step up since you can't call out where the killer is or if you are going for an unhook unless you're on comms. The best you can do is point a gesture which draws attention to something without clarifying why. Still, it's nice being able to see if everyone is working on gens so you can decide if you need to go for an unhook, or if someone's being chased so you can safely continue on your generator.

I'm also glad that they've started to make moves against aggressive tunneling and camping. Terms used to describe when a killer ignores all other survivors and tunnelvisions entirely on one person, putting them on a hook and essentially putting a tent down right next to them preventing anyone from attempting a rescue. This playstyle is boring for both sides since the killer puts in very little effort, the survivor who gets camped is unable to play the game at all, and the remaining survivors are free to do objectives with no killer interference. Thankfully a recent perk called Reassurance makes people take longer to die on the hook, and if you manage to unhook someone they now have a few seconds where they are immune to damage so they cannot be instantly hooked again. These changes make the strategy far less effective giving the killer more incentive to actually play the game. Insidious Bubba is still a thing though, so if you see someone hooked in the basement and you can't hear the killer anywhere beware it may be a deathtrap.

In conclusion: Dead by Daylight is a rather unique and fun asymmetrical survival game, if you have friends to play with. It has issues but most are being ironed out by the devs over time. The more damning, underlying problem is the mentality a large part of the playerbase has. And this is something that would take a lot more work to fix, if at all possible.
