If you are a general fan of MH this is a pretty good upgrade, the world / exploring it is better than out of missions.
If you are new to MH, this is probably your best choice.

Pros
Open world
Some improvements on weapons I enjoy
Interesting variations on known mechanics
Character growth if you are into that sorta thing

Cons
Requires a beast of a machine to get 40-50fps with decent settings
Some glitches - The "random polygon assaults your eyeball", pathing that leaves you stuck
Story is meh, but I don't think the expectation is high either

Booted the update up.
Still runs very poorly on my 3090, 9800x3d and artifacts / tearing with DLSS set on Quality.

Didn't get far into the game, I'll give it a few updates before trying again at this point.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At its heart, there might be a great game here. But its marred by so many bugs, broken features and poor performance that I cannot recommend this game.

Maybe check back in 6 months.

Major reasons I say skip right now.
1 Even a fairly powerful system struggles to deliver more than 30 FPS, sometimes you'll see even lower FPS.
2 Terrible levels of artifacting, objects popping in and out (just stand in prypiate and look left and right from the safe area, you can watch buildings pop in and out of existence with all the settings on max!)
3 The Human encounter enemies, have an AI has an aimbot so simple I'm reminded of CounterStrike 1.6 bots, and equally "dumb". They can path around and over objects but their grenade pathing and other logic is basic.
4 The enemy spawns are lazy level of 'ontop of you' and random in nature.
5 A clearly static world, there are "tons of people" roaming the map per the random encounters but nothing changes outside of the static map assets that were there when you started the game or change as part of prescripted events.
6 An end game so bad I stopped playing half way through it, the just leap frogs into the end from a series of "fetch" events.
7 All enemies have super X-ray vision.
8 The game is mostly First Person Shooter, but the controls feel clumsy and the gun play itself mushy and unsatisfying. Like Skif reloads like he's practicing on a Sunday in front of his TV while a Mutant is ripping his face off.

I think there is a good concept here, but I don't believe this game should have been released without further work.

Its hard to describe this game, is life really horror?
Ultimately, I am not even really sure what possessed me to purchase this game. - But you should, even if I'm not sure I'll ever be able to play it twice.

Goosebumps, maybe some tears. This game is weird and I'm disappointing the reviews are not 99.9% in recommendation.

Its a decent time sink. If you are expecting more than Fallout but this time in space, this game will probably dissapoint.

Its not unfun, and its less buggy than Fallout. Though the skimming of modder generated money under the guise of "getting them paid" is making me wonder if I should buy the next Fallout in $noun.

The base game is great.

Any game that installs a kernel level root kit on my system for proposed security instantly *instantly* loses my trust and gets uninstalled.

Full stop that is not acceptable.

And as a result, I absolutely do not recommend this game. Fun to play but do no support this behavior with your money.

They claim to be removing it, but its still there so I'm uninstalling the game and leaving this review.

Edited in response to dev response.

I got this game for free originally back with a 1080, and have been playing since.
There have been good and bad updates, this game is generally good.

Wow this game is bad.

Choppy gross gooey models.
Shadows and effects that are just as rubbery as Skyrim
It promptly dives into a really not so great plot line.

This game is not worth $40 not even close.

38 min in and I've asked for a refund save your money, time and bandwidth.

I wanted to like this game, I really did.

What it does right:
Trops
Theme
Graphics

What it does wrong:
Combat - Mash attack, mash defense, spam potions
Magic - whooo... three spells and they require items to suppliment and feed them for additional normal spells like... stop or poison.
Story line - I'm still not really sure why I should care about this other king guy
Character building - I swear more emphasis is on the lady who loves your cars story line than anyone elses
The ENDLESS watching Ingnes drive or just holding W and occassionally tapping A and D while the game guides you on a rail down the road
Summons - Not only can you not use them on command but some of them are restricted to one fight.
Weapons - Like ... seriously I shouldn't have the 2nd most powerful sword in game 44 hours in.
Damage caps - I was like lvl 30 and found I could hit the damage cap quite easily. WHY?
"Random encounters" - I'd rather run in circles FFX style than what FF XV thinks is 'random'

3/10
Nice graphics, ok voice acting, and it does look like a final fantasy game.
I'm asking for a refund if I'm going to give Square my money I"m going to buy FFX and just replay a game I liked instead of this boring mess.

If you are looking for a ACTION / Hack and slash game this isn't it!

However, its beautfiul well thought out and has a lot of clever game play features.
Much more of a puzzle game than I expected.

Great base game. Bethesda ruined it as they went along.

Their most recent DLC is literally DLC to use DLC. Its DLC all the way down.
If you buy this game, do not even bother with any DLC. Just use mods, theres a whole nexus of them if you google it.

Bugs, bugs and more bugs. It doesn't seem to get any better I have once again had to nuke my saves as they've managed to cause insta-crashes after another update for them.

The DLC is all rushed, theres only one I don't regret buying the rest I found the mods you can find in that nexus are better thought out... which is really saying something.
