GOTY 2023, what else can I say? I have put more time into this game more quickly than any game I've played since I was 13 (what game was that, you ask? Baldur's Gate ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ number 1 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥... and Diablo 2). Anyway, this game has many bumps in the road but that doesn't matter when you consider how much fun can be squeezed out of every minute. I didn't even know there were bugs in Act 3 until I reached it after 220 hours of playing. This game was well worth the wait of 3 years in early access, and I think Larian over delivered on what they were promising. That's how you do it.

Baby's first sekiro may be correct, but I enjoyed how I was able to play and beat the game even on Jedi Master, and now I will probably play other games like it

Early Access Review
This game will consume your life. Definitely has its flaws (the way cosmetic/extra construction items are unlocked is a bit meh) and there is a learning curve. But it is a fun time sink, and the game loop is addicting and feels rewarding.

Build an efficient factory and battle against enemies that are a few steps harder to beat than a Minecraft mob. Transportation items make the game more fun and interesting, and you'll find yourself constantly tweaking, reassessing, and making new plans.

Just get good at basic math, don't build your factory until you've unlocked the foundations to put it on, and you should be good to go.

Despite being early access, it feels like there is plenty to do. Hopefully by full official release, there will be even more content, because if there isn't it will feel like the "early access" label was a bit of a dupe.

Despite being a buggy mess, this game is truly among the best- if not the best- open world RPGs in history. No game since has handled factions, choice, and story as well as this game. Writing this review makes me want to go redo my mods and play it again. Seriously.

2023 EDIT: Amendment: Baldur's Gate 3 has matched my feelings about this game, they are now tied. All previous comments stand.

Things to love about Doom 2016:

-Bethesda/Zenimax being faithful to an old franchise ffs
-Gives an interesting story
-RPG-lite elements add interesting flavor
-bludgeoning soundtrack
-the game doesn't hold your hand through stuff and zero pay to win

Downsides:
-I wish that they would bring back some old stylistic elements of the HUD, like Doomguy face in the bottom corner. Only been playing for about 7 hours at this point so if this is unlockable or a feature I'm excited to possibly see it (?)
-The game at times tries to tug you in two directions- puzzle platformer vs. fast paced shooter, and those elements can sometimes clash. Thankfully though, arcade mode is there and of course being able to find secrets by returning to old missions are ways around this.

9/10, looking forward to purchasing Doom Eternal which I have heard wonderful things about.

Aside from really bland story elements and the illusion of choice, I started noticing more and more visual glitches. My machine was built in 2017 and I am running an NVIDIA GTX 1060 and an i7 3.3 ghz intel processor, the recommended hardware for this game, and I still had tons of issues with immersion breaking visual glitches. IN THE GD TUTORIAL there was a glitch with soldiers who were supposed to be trying to kill me zooming past me and breaking through walls. This was a full week after a day one patch. Once I found out that item hoarders like me could risk corrupting our saves by having too much stuff in our inventories I decided the combination of me not liking the story and this BS was enough to ask for a refund. I had heard this game hyped up so much by friends and the media that I decided to take the plunge since initial reviews were stellar. I guess that bubble popped really quick. I suppose if this game goes the way of FO76 and actually gets good I'd buy it over again, but man... I really never wanna buy a day one game from anyone ever again unless its a true indie dev.

EDIT:
It's 2.0 and I am giving it another shot. I played through the enormous tutorial again and find that... ehhhhh.... npcs clipping through each other STILL. The story is a bit more fun than I remember, I was probably super depressed when this came out (true). As of writing this I am going to do some modding to see if I can take the NPCs up a notch from "barely better than San Andreas." I mean, c'mon I know maybe I'm being a bit petty, but it does not immerse me in the world to be watching a fully animated, beautiful story NPC talking to me whilst a Goldeneye 64 character chews at a burger that never gets smaller, in the background. It just doesn't sit with me that well that companies like CDPR and BGS are still just like "let modders fix it!"

Early Access Review
Great game, I had never played any rogue-likes, so I picked this one up to play with friends. Great replayability, draws you in and gets you invested.

EDIT: Years later, I am kind of pissed about what has happened with this game. It took a long time for the devs to come up with what is still a very mediocre set of levels, and it feels like pulling teeth to get them to release new items, characters, modes etc. And now of all things they want people who paid for early access to shell out another 15 bucks for a 1 character expansion with a new game mode and maybe some new levels? Hell damn fart. I got it on a 10 dollar sale. So now amending once more... still, do better Hopoo!

Other than reminding me of how awful some aspects of D&D 2.0 really were (like THAC0), this game is not bad, and it's set in Forgotten Realms. It is a timeless classic, a masterpiece on another level. That being said, some of the mechanics have not aged well, and this enhanced edition unfortunately does not compete with modern takes on this genre. Still, if you are nostalgic and fondly remember playing this, it is well worth the cost, especially if you wait for a sale.
