This game had big shoes to fill after 2017's fantastic Sonic Mania. As a long time fan of the 2D series, I will say that I had a great time with this game. The physics certainly feel a little different to the classic 2D games but not in a bad way. You get used to it very quickly and the gameplay is solid. Love the selection of characters, each of which feels unique and a joy to experiment with.

A great selection of zones, and nice to see them go for an all new set rather than re-using old ones. Complimented by some great music, yes the style is a little inconsistent but it's hard to complain when it's this catchy.

In terms of downsides, there are some major difficulty spikes towards the end of the game, which falls more into the tedious category more than anything. The special stages also aren't the most interesting, but since they're over so quickly they don't overstay their welcome.

This is an incredibly solid game, I'm happy to see Sonic Team try something new with the 2D formula and it's great groundwork for whats bound to come next!
