DayZ is not a game for somebody looking for easily accessible entertainment. On unmodded official servers, the game is very much focused on survival. Getting the hang of where to find good equipment and nutrition, and the layout of the map(s) in general, will be difficult at first. On Low and Medium population servers running into other players is quite rare, although gunshots may be heard going off in the distance. Once you get used to the game you'll be able to track a player(s) who's recently passed through where you are if you pay attention. You may find a solo player or a duo if you're going to locations with high-tier drops or running along the coast.

Death is almost instant if you are shot. If you don't immediately die and you're prepared to treat an injury, you may survive if you manage to get away. But your clothing will be ruined and will need replacing if you want to survive the cold weather, otherwise you will get sick and die. Running and walking are a major component of this game.

TL;DR - If you aren't prepared to put in the time this game asks of you, chances are you will not enjoy it.
