There's a lot of things that are wrong with AC EVO - the game was entirely offline for the first two weeks, the FPS performance is not great, the AI is really slow and stupid (to the point where it is actually worse than the AI in original AC with Content Manager/CSP tweaks) and the FFB is quite divisive. There has been steps in the right direction in a couple of areas which I massively appreciate, but I wonder whether it is going to be enough. I will try and give a fairly in-depth review as someone who has spent a decent amount of time sim racing.

On a single screen, FPS performance is okay but if you use triple screens then you will be hard stuck at 50-60 fps almost irrespective of what hardware you have. This frame rate is of course still playable, but there's a big difference between getting 50-60 in a grid of cars and getting the same frame rate while you're on your own hotlapping, meaning you have almost no performance headroom if racing against other cars. This is despite the fact that triple screens have already received some optimisation, my frame rate on day 1 was worse. I can't speak for VR performance but I've heard other people with 4080/4090 GPUs and 9800x3Ds or 13900k CPUs struggling to go any higher than 60fps on 1440p triples with VR performance being worse. I currently have a 5800x3D and a 6900XT, and I get the same frame rate on 1080p triples

IMO the game's FFB is an improvement over ACC, but it's not as good as AC - I would describe it as a somewhat weird mix between ACC, RaceRoom and a tiny hint of AC. There is a lot of built-in damping that you can't remove and the self-aligning torque can be very aggressive at times. Feeling understeer through the wheel is very difficult, almost impossible, as there's no tangible drop in force (you can absolutely feel when you're pushing past the tyre IRL). Some cars definitely feel better than others though - I enjoyed stuff like the Honda S2000 and Ford Escort, but nearly all the racing cars except the Mazda MX5 cup don't feel right to me. Good physics are meaningless if you don't also have good force feedback and I wouldn't call AC EVOs FFB good even though some cars were quite intuitive to drive.

Despite all this, I would still recommend giving AC EVO a go IF you're fully aware of the current state of the game. One thing that I can say is objectively better are the kerbs, and although more subjective I also like how the cars rotate under braking. Kerbs no longer have any sort of weird behaviour and are now way more consistently usable and if you drive anything at Imola you will immediately notice the difference. You can now use the sausage kerbs without spinning or bouncing off of them in a weird way and it feels amazing to be able to straight line the chicane after acque minerali without having to take a very specific line to avoid said bouncing.

The game is bare bones and the driver academy was a bit disappointing (and also has issues with your times sometimes not being saved) and I hope Kunos will eventually add to it. Compared to Gran Turismo's license tests, I don't believe anyone who's new would be able to learn to actually race from them. Gran Turismo had way more information in the description - it gave you a general idea of what to do, what to expect, you could review a replay showing an example of a gold time, and it was structured in a way that makes sense in which it's 100% feasible for you to actually learn (I'm definitely proof of that). You start out with just accelerating and braking in a straight line in a slow car, a faster car, and then tackling certain types of simple corners one at a time in a slower car, and then you usually end up doing a full lap of a track near the end. Then in higher licenses you tackle more tricky types of corners in faster cars and some wet weather driving here and there. Some license tests were notoriously difficult but the music fanfare for getting silver or gold kept you going. Kunos' driver academy in AC EVO by comparison has none of this and is structured in a pretty random way with single sentence "tips" that IMO aren't even really helpful and they weren't satisfying to complete.

I have faith that performance issues will eventually be addressed given how often small updates are being pushed out to address bugs, but I fear the FFB and core gameplay experience which separates EVO from AC and ACC will stay the same or similar given the current mindset of Kunos.
