A Step in the Right Direction from One's Justice 1... Sorta

Better than most copy/paste anime arena fighters. Animations are gorgeous. The characters are really fun to play. It's everything the first game had but better. This review will specifically be explaining the key differences between OJ2 and OJ1 as I feel they are important.

Special Gauge or Stamina Meter?

One's Justice 2 doesn't rely on cheesy combo strings, unlike its predecessor. You are punished for extensive combos by having your special gauge depleted if you dash cancel mid-combo. If you want to deal some damage, you're better off conditioning yourself by using your gauge as a stamina meter. I appreciate how they wanted to go against the grain a little with this, but it is a drastic change compared to the first game nonetheless. While it was the smarter choice to make, it removes a lot of the hilarious chaos that OJ1 had.

Assists are Meaningless

It's definitely worth mentioning the the philosophy of Assists, as they operate completely differently in this game. In OJ1, you could call in Assists during your combos to fully maximize your damage potential. These were incredibly smart plays because it calls for incredible skill and timing to be able to pull off. In OJ2, however, Assists are used for escaping combos rather than extending them. It is quite literally the embodiment of a "get out of jail free" card. It's completely lousy and negates high-level plays.

Armored Attacks

Another general issue is the usage of armored attacks. If this were OJ1, you could counter an armored attack with another armored attack, avoiding the initial punish. The flaw in this feature was that if your armor was countered by an armor, you could retaliate with another armor before you received the blow. This would result in 5-10 second, drawn-out armor battles. It was silly and quite honestly a half-baked mechanic. In OJ2, however, if you try to counter an armored attack with an armored attack, your guard will immediately break, resulting in a punishable stun.

Final Thoughts

They removed a lot of chaos with the release of OJ2, which is where most of the fun was usually had. The game is solid fun regardless, but it definitely misses that charm the first game had. But if you never played the first game, these changes shouldn't bother you! This game goes on sale quite a lot due to Bamco's endless publisher sales, so I only recommend picking this up if you're a fan of MHA and when it's discounted. The replay value isn't that great (arena fighter moment) and the community is so dead you have to request battles via discussion threads.

6.5/10 hands down most enjoyable arena fighter I've ever played.
