Gone Home is all about exploration. It has an interesting storytelling (narration) that either catches your attention or you quit 10 minutes into the game and never launch it again. Fullbright was able the fully capture the atmosphere of an American household in the year of 1995 (as that's when the story takes place).

The protagonist is a girl who arrives home from a journey abroad only to find her family house totally empty. One would creep out after a while but as you explore the empty house you realise it's not one of those games: no monster is gonna jump at you and no scary sound effect will be played just to drive you up to wall. But how do you play the game? You search, you interact, you listen. That's all.

Gone Home is a "peaceful" game that can be completed after a couple of hours. The experience is similar to that of Dear Esther. Recommended if you're interested in playing something... new.

This is a superb sequel to an already super Western-themed FPS. Bound in Blood is the prequel to the critically acclaimed Call of Juarez. We play as the younger Ray McCall and also his brother, Thomas. Unlike the first episode, BiB is not strict when it comes to player selection: you can complete the larger part of the story just playing one of the protagonists. I preferred Ray as with him I believe the Western experience is better - he shoots first and asks questions later. Thomas can use a lasso and handles the rifle better but he is the weaker brother.

Ray and Thomas fight in the war between the states when they become deserters as they find it important to save their farm. This is an interesting turn of events as not only do you fight bandits in this episode but also the soldiers of the confederacy along with the Navajo and Apache native tribes.

Gameplay-wise CoJ did not change one bit: you pretty much shoot everybody who's moving. Occasionally you use dynamite to blow things up and this time you can complete sidequests sometimes before progressing the story further. Also, your pistols do not overheat, thus, you can just play the game with what you have without having to stop for one sec.

The game looks beautiful. The explosions of your dynamite, the forests in the mountains, the riverbed and ghost town all are examples how well Techland's Chrome engine performs. The game is also optimised very well, so no glitches are found throughout the game.

For those of you who liked the original game Bound in Blood is a must. For those who never played it can pick this one up right away as this is a prequel, thus, not directly linked to its predecessor.

Unfortunately, the sequel does not offer anything new to Zombie Shooter. I noticed that there were more dialogues but that's all. It is as if they tried to improve upon the storytelling but these games were never about the plot just the mindless action.

It was even shorter to complete a playthrough. It's best if gamers just stick to the first episode or Alien Shooter 2.

The mindless action offered by the SIGMA team continues! This time it's zombies instead of aliens.

There's not much to say, really. It's all about the action: you kill hordes of zombies while exploring the levels, all from a isometric perspective. Some people find its repetitiveness dull, however, I liked it along with its fast-paced gameplay style.

From all the SIGMA games out there this or Alien Shooter 2 should be picked.

Alpha Protocol is an interesting TPS developed by Obsidian Entertainment. In order to define its genre I'd say it's an action-RPG. You level up throughout the game which allows you to select from various perks. I, personally, went with pistols as weapon specialisation along with stealth which made my gameplay a lot of fun - I have to admit, though, combat is not exactly refined and the boss battle did not leave much room for stealth which was a disappointment.

Alpha Protocol offers you choices during the dialogues. As opposed to Mass Effect there's no indication whether or not your choices are good (no Paragon and Renegade approach) and interestingly conversations are timed so you need to pick an answer rather quickly. Making the bad decisions can have dire consequences at the end of the game which has some surprises in store for you.

While somewhat mediocre, Alpha Protocol has its exciting moments and those in favour of the genre should pick this up. I believe its metascore of 72/100 is not really justified.

I miss a good trailer from the store page that really encapsulates the psychological horror this game represents. The images, unfortunately, do not do justice and not the best ones were taken, to be honest.

In any case, Machine for Pigs is the spiritual successor of Dark Descent. Frictional Games here only acted as the publisher while the development tasks were carried out by the company called Chinese Room. They have gathered fame recently with "Everybody's Gone To The Rapture", plus, not long ago they released a new edition of their first game called "Dear Esther".

Similarly to its predecessor, this game also has a protagonist suffering from amnesia. Mandus, a wealthy businessman wakes up in his bedroom hearing the voice of his children calling him. He sets out to find them and along the way he finds notes and receives phone calls - all these explain the background story more and Mandus quickly realises that in order to find his children he must go deep. Into the horrifying depths of his mansion where a machine lies capable of doing terrible things.

And this is where I go no further as everything else would be a spoiler especially mentioning the nature of our enemies. In terms of game mechanics the creators simplified the game. We still have a light source important to use in dark areas but you 1) do not become afraid in the dark resulting in hallucinations and 2) there is no need to collect oil or anything like that - the lamp shows the way all the time.

So, it really is just the lantern and running and hiding but unlike Dark Descent in this game we do not get used to the dark. If the lamp is turned off we are truly in darkness. I think this makes the game more terrifying, however, regarding the encounters with enemies they are much fewer this time. It seems the emphasis was on story immersion and jumpscares were given much less importance.

Sill, MfP is a great successor and if you read every note in the game carefully you might just find out how this game is connected to its prequel. I think Chinese Room did a wonderful job with the sound effects and the music of the game. The graphics may seem dated (I believe they use the same engine here) but we get to feel we are in London in 1899. If you liked Dark Descent you may get disappointed in the sequel - it all depends on what exactly you liked in the first game. I would say MfP is a lightweight version, still, it is part of the roster of great horror games.

After Rebellion disappeared it was Monolith that gave us the sequel to this franchise. That was back in 2001. Then, many years later, the news came that Rebellion again was working on an Aliens vs Predator game that felt like a reboot instead of a sequel.

Make no mistake: Aliens vs Predator is entertaining. It looks good, it plays well and it sounds good. Especially the sound is the key factor as those who saw the films of both franchises (who didn't?) want to hear the aliens screaming or the predators using their gadgets. Or the human beings scream as they fall victim to these monstrous creatures, right?

Then what went wrong? Well, Rebellion made an extremely short game. You have 3 campaigns but they all are very short and some of the areas appear in all 3 storylines. It is not necessarily a problem as these affect one another, it's just annoying that after 9 hours you have finished all 3 campaigns.

Unfortunately, by the time I purchased Rebellion's latest aliens game multiplayer had already gone dead. I was unable to find any games, thus, I simply cannot evaluate this part of the game. This also means that in case you wish to purchase the game it is completely pointless to buy its DLCs that are only multiplayer add-ons.

It's a shame Rebellion gave us a very short aliens game with multiplayer that went dead a couple of years after its release. I do not recommend it, in fact, I do not know which aliens game to recommend as the latest, Colonial Marines, was atrocious, but that's another story.

PS: Now that Alien Isolation came out perhaps there is a decent Alien game out there, after all. So far the reviews have been positive; Isolation will be my next game from this franchise!

This is the first Amnesia game that was made by a Swedish company known as Frictional Games. Their previous work included the Penumbra trilogy.

Amnesia follows the same concept: This is a first person shooter but while this is how we characterise this genre the game does not have any shootings in it. In fact, you do not even have any weapons. When enemies are approaching you escape into the dark, hide and wait until the coast is clear. And you know what? This is terrifying. Terrifying as even if you successfully escape you have to continue and the game constantly reminds you that you are in a hostile area and someone can jump at you: anytime and anywhere.

And this is why Amnesia is a superb survival horror game. The emphasis is not about gore and violence but about the unknown that is lurking in the shadow and you know it is in your way and you still need to press forward to reach your goal. But what it is exactly, these monsters? And how do you fight them?

The protagonist, Daniel, wakes up from a long dream and suffers from amnesia. In addition to this, he finds himself in an unknown castle somewhere in Prussia. He needs to find out what happened to him by following clues and eventually he realises that the answers lie deep in the castle where more dangers are waiting for him.

The ads are not lying: this game is truly about immersion and living through a nightmare. Make sure you have a headset and you play it at night. Guaranteed fun!

An old school shooter that has a top-down / isometric perspective, similar to the one that characterises many hack 'n' slash RPGs. But Alien Shooter is not an RPG. It's all about the mindless action. Notice the adjective mindless! You press down your left mouse button and you do not stop until all aliens are dead. At the same time, of course, you try to get away from the smaller creatures and avoid the projectiles of the bigger ones.

Although the game has some RPG elements (you can visit stores regularly and there's levelling up) main emphasis is on the action. It's a shame that SIGMA made this game very short and that they recycled most of the elements in the game that later became known as Zombie Shooter part 1 and part 2. I assume the game's next installment, Conscription, looks and plays exactly like this one so I did not bother purchasing it.

Still, you can pick up this one or one of the Zombie Shooter versions and have a couple of hours of fun when SIGMA games are on sale.

American Nightmare is an interesting addition to a superb third-person shooter. The location now is Arizona; instead of dark woods you now have desert-like areas and the game focuses on a very arcade-like shooting experience.

Beside the plot - which is the continuation of the original - you have stages you can play separately and as there are leaderboards you can replay them for higher score.

I recommend this expansion pack but only if it's on sale, otherwise it's just too short and isn't worth the money. While the arcade like features are nice I missed the long and interesting story that characterised the vanilla game. For me American Nightmare was fun but a bit of a let down after the core game and its DLCs.
