With a dying community and a need for more updates (which are thankfully coming), I can't say that everyone will love this game. With hella hours on this account and prob 500+ hours on two other accounts (since 2.0), I hate seeing the fall of such an enjoyable game. However, Unturned can easily give you a couple hundred hours of good fun for new players.

Play singleplayer for a calm experience, or rp if you're into that. or possibly mod the ♥♥♥♥ out of singleplayer to enhance gameplay.

Play multiplayer servers, which have all unfortunately become death-matches with extra steps. I say stick to lightly modded vanilla servers for the best times, or rp if you're really into that, but avoid p2w servers at all costs (besides wallet costs).
