A delightful, ~4 hour, casual, little alchemy-like, resource manager, village builder. Well worth the $5

TL:DR;
- Took me ~20-25hrs to complete with low replay-ability IMO
- Amazing art style
- Not scary (No jump-scares)
- Fun, engaging story
- Card gaming mechanics are simple yet fun
- Escape room aspect is fun but straight forward (only real "puzzles" are card mechanics)

Amazing game! If you are at all into card games then this is a great entry for you. I would also like to preface this review by saying that nothing in this review is meant negatively toward the game - I believe this game is nearly perfect with design choices that are intentional and appropriate, even if they might not please every gamer.

Art:
Inscryption has such a love for atmosphere and details that ends up sucking you into the world. The art style is the best I've seen of a pseudo CRT/pixel filter that generates pixel art over 3d objects. There were also no glaring immersion breaking problems like weird clipping and such.

Horror?:
I would not recommend this game if you're trying to get scared. There are practically no "scary" moments. The atmosphere is very dark and foreboding, but that's about it. If you've seen any footage of the card game and your opponent is just some eyes in shadow - that's about as scary as it gets.

Game Mechanics:
There are a few different game mechanics in this game, and some would be a spoiler to announce because this game keeps you on your feet. Just when you've started to get comfortable with one way of playing you're thrust into something majorly different. But simply put, the card game aspect is pretty straight forward and simple while still managing to be fun and engaging. You won't be playing the card game long enough for the mechanics to get boring and "solved". But at the same time, the card game is not something infinitely replay-able like you might consider Slay the Spire or MTG to be. Inscryption lacks in-depth never ending synergies like those games have, which can make playing over and over again dull if you were to try. Also speaking to the non-replay-ability is the escape room aspect. Like most escape rooms, once you know the key and/or the objective the only point of playing again is just to see how fast you can do it and not so much to actually challenge yourself to solve something new. I also wouldn't describe the escape room aspect as super puzzling like other escape rooms can be, because I feel that isn't really the point of the game. The escape room mechanic is only a vessel to explore the world and understand it more. All-in-all for the game mechanics; it's fun and engaging, especially enough for a well packaged 20-25 hour experience, but not for infinite replay-ability.

With an overwhelmingly positive review percentage in mind; I'm not trying to bash this game, and obviously there are people that love this game, but it has many problems in my eyes. To dissuade those who might be in the same boat I'm just going to list some of the problems I have with it:

- Very clunky simultaneous multiplayer UI - don't play with people who don't like to take their time to read a little.
- the combat is superficial, non-strategic, and boring, even for (video)board-game standards
- Limited classes/class expression and thus play styles
- No story progression. People talk about how much they love the story development but characters come and go like nothing. Maybe there's a better overarching story but it's not interesting enough or skillful enough to have caught my attention.

In short, every element of this game is either flawed or paper thin, and I'm a little sad I wasn't able to return it within the window of opportunity. That being said, play it for under 2hours and figure out if it's for you, if it's not then return it.

If you're going to play this game with mouse and keyboard these fixes are a MUST:

- Download and insert Dead Space Mouse Fix[community.pcgamingwiki.com] .dll into Dead Space steam common folder
-----------(This fixes the mouse input and lag issues)
- Lock the fps to 60MAX outside of the game, I use the Nvidia control panel
-----------(This fixes terribly funny yet immersion breaking ragdoll physics problems)
*optional
- If needed, enable Vsync OUTSIDE of the game, again I use the Nvidia control panel

My overall opinion (not an average):
8.5/10

As simple as possible: (5 is neutral)
Scariness: 7/10
Amount of Jump Scares: 3/10
Combat: 8/10
Gameplay Variation: 7/10
Story: 6.5/10
Sound Desgin: 9/10
Scenery: 9/10
Graphics: 8/10

This game holds up (when you fix all of the bad PC port issues) and I would gladly buy a remastering of this game. Dead Space is a classic and if you're looking at reviews to convince yourself to play it - look no further because after making those quick fixes above you'll be able to enjoy the game unhindered. Now, if you're looking for the scariest game you could ever play this isn't the one. At times Dead space can be quite claustrophobic and can make you jump, but after getting used to killing the enemies them over 30 times they don't really scare you as much anymore. That being said the suspense is always the scariest and this game can convince your hairs to stand up on end with its incredible sound design and atmosphere making it incredibly immersive. It's the perfect level of scary in my opinion, keeping me on edge and allowing me to beat the scare instead of scaring me away from ever touching the game again.

The combat in this game feels so original from anything else, even though the core gameplay is no different than other games: aim gun -> shoot at weak point -> kill enemy -----> BUT, every weapon as an alternate firing mode/ability, the weaknesses are limbs instead of the tradition of heads, and every aspect of combat just feels really great with amazingly unique weapons.

Speaking of gameplay, there are more than a sufficient amount of times where you are required to use - or have the option to use - secondary abilities such as telekinetic like abilities, freezing/being able to slow things and enemies down, and jumping through zero gravity. These give a nice spice to gameplay - mixing things up and keeping it interesting.

Graphically speaking this game looks great for its age. I'm not one to be picky about graphics, but when I notice bad graphics I can call it out. Even with the lower poly count and lower res textures, Dead space really masterfully uses the limits of the time making it so that even today Dead Space delivers much to appreciate. Specifically I noticed the animations of characters faces or models being notably well done and impressive.

If you're thinking about getting this game - just do it, it'll be hard to regret trying, especially at the low prices you can find it at.

Early Access Review
Truly great co-operative experience with unique tactical gameplay. This game IS hard; it forces you to either play tactically or die otherwise. GTFO randomizes its item generation making the mission of locating those items actually challenging and not like most games where as long as you hold W to run forward you'll end up at your destination. The enemies also have their own unique difficulty in the way they move and react to being hit.

GTFO is a terrific, challenging game and I can't wait for what a full release has in store.

This game is super un-balanced as it stands, the monsters being way to good for the game to be won. Unless the monster does absolutely nothing it is literally impossible to win because there aren't enough resources to fight against the monster and its cooldowns for really strong moves like "teleport 2 inches away from the players" are way too short.

Basically, unless you plan to lose with 100% consistency agaisnt the monster and not have fun doing it - don't play this game.
