Probably the best game I've ever played!

Choices really matter and are sometimes real difficult to make, combat is engaging and tactical, plenty of options on how you want to play the game and loads and loads of story, lore, quests, unique characters and fun.

But the moment I realized this game really is a 10 out of 10 was when the music kicked in on a specific fight, I dont wan't to spoil things so I wont get into details. It overwhelmed me and for a few moments I just sat back and let it come over me, such an epic experience.

Highly recommended!

In short
Great game, captivating and emotional story but with one big flaw.

First of all...performance
My system: I5 10400, RTX 2060 Super, 16GB RAM .. not high end, but no potato either.

I played it at high settings at first expecting my system could handle it, but I got as low as 10-15 FPS during the dual reality parts. This diminished the experience in such a degree I didn't really want to continue playing. But I was so captivated by the story and the ambience I decided to experiment with the settings. At last I lowered my settings a lot and set the FPS cap to 30 when I found out it was intended to meet 30 FPS and that gave me a steady 30FPS throughout the game. Maybe it didn't look as pretty, but smooth gameplay is much more important.

Really tweak your settings first in order to get stable FPS before you play on and get dissapointed!

There is a lot to like if you get your expectations right
This game is beautifully crafted, it tells a great story, but leaves also enough space for the players own imagination. The game keeps me captivated, even after finishing it. I am still wondering about the details of the plots of the characters involved which to me is very positive.

The mechanics are really supporting the storytelling, there is some action, some puzzling and collecting, but mostly it's walking around and watching the story unfold. I really like the split screen mechanic, it helps you getting a sense of the duality the protoganist is experiencing.

Don't expect a horror action game, that is not what you're getting. It's a disturbing, moody, emotional interactive movie and I think a great one too!

My review so far? I'm having a lot of fun pushing all the right (and wrong) buttons and watch my cute minions work their butts off to survive and thrive.

This game has been released too soon, had it been released in it's current state the reception of it would be far more positive. But the game seems to get a second chance with the 1.3 update .

I did already like the game when it came out, because for me the most appealing part of the game is the lonely exploration of a very beautiful universe. It's about enjoying the music along with the scenery of colours and shapes. I did get bored with the grind however and other games came along so I dropped it.

I have high hopes all the added content, the new storyline, the new mechanics and UI will get me into the game again and hopefully get me attached for at least 100 hours.

Review is based on "Voices of the deep"-update:

It is not often that I write reviews, I'm just not that good in describing in detail my expierences with a game. But I gladly make an exception for Subnautica which is one of the very rare games that gets me truly overwhelmed and immersed.

First of all, I think Subnautica is a schoolbook example of how developers should handle early access games. Unknown Worlds communication about the game is very transparent, with a clear vision about the future of the game, giving even insight in their roadmap, backlog and schedules which is quite unique. What stands-out for me is their choice to focus on a good single player experience, something I find lacking in other games in the survival and exploration genre.

I am now in my second playthrough, my first one was over a year ago which stopped prematurely because of fear of getting bored of the game and missing out on great content later on in development. I picked it up again a few weeks ago, because the Voices of The Deep update got me really excited. I just had to play :)

What I like about this game in it's current stage is that the developing story of the player and the planet he is stranded on is getting clearer and really gives purpose to the survival and exploration elements of the game.

Exploration: the real treat of this game, the sea and al it's biomes are gorgious even when they are scary as hell. The story encourages and guides exploration in the beginning of the game, which helps getting you started. Later on it's all up to you as a player to explore and discover. It can take a while to learn the map, but I must admit I'm not utilizing the beacons properly yet ;) I love al the flora and fauna, although I'm still a bit scared to venture into the dark, afraid of big hostile monsters.

Survival: for me a mandatory way to play these kind of games, survival gives a sense of urgency and adds to the immersion. Acquiring food and water is a constant worry, but is also quite easy making it a balanced experience. Most hostile creatures can be dealt with or outrun, but are very deadly when you fail. This all adds to making exploration challenging and rewarding.

Crafting and basebuilding: What I like about crafting and building is that there is a minimum ammount of grinding required. Finding the blueprint parts can be a chore sometimes, but apart from that gathering materials, crafting items and building is easy and fun. I would not mind if resources would respawn over time, especially for quartz.

Vehicles: The vehicles are well designed, intuitive, the huds and interface UI are very good at this point and I absolutely love both the cyclops and the seamoth. The cyclops can be quite a challenge to navigate and at this point I think it gets attacked to often by hostiles.

UI: The UI has improved a lot. The interfaces of al the interactive devices are very intuitive to use. The blueprint tab in the PDA could use a search function.

Performance: My PC is some sort of monster of frankenstein, it has an old CPU (AMD Phenom II X4 955) and old HDD but I upgraded RAM and GPU last year to 16GB and GTX1070 (8GB). The game is running ok on this hardware, but CPU and HD are bottlenecking resulting in framedrops (sometimes below 10fps) in complex areas (mushroom forest for example). I think overall the performance of this game is already quite good.

The game never crashed the past weeks \o/

Some notes:

- I am at point where I have yet to discover a lot of content, but progress slows down and you've to motivate yourself more to keep on playing. As end game is in development I have good faith this will be resolved in the final product.
- Expect bugs, although I haven't encountered major bugs.
- Basebuilding feels a bit trivial, more estatic then mandatory for survival.

Conclusion: I would absolutely recommend this game even if you are not that much into sandbox survival games. The fact that there is a coherent developing story really gives this beautiful game purpose. I'm very curious for the things to come and the final product later this year.
