The game's pretty good. The SHMUP segments are fun and feature a lot of overall insanity with plentiful powerups and a special attack that charges extremely fast. I-frames are on the low side after being hit, which will likely require some getting used to. Performance during SHMUP segments doesn't really affect anything (not even achievements), but it's still fun to do your best. The boss fights are all great and there's a pretty fun arcade mode, though I feel it lacks replayability. It does feel a bit weird to jump between the VN and gameplay segments. They don't always mesh super well.

The story is one of those "good, but not great" deals. I really liked the characters of Alba and Hannah and the overall plot was fun and interesting, even if some elements were fairly predictable. But overall, there's not all that much negative to criticize with the writing, though I do feel like the fairly short runtime does harm the overall pacing and one chapter contains a disproportionate amount of exposition compared to the rest.

Game's pretty good but don't expect it to change your life. I got it for free, but I wouldn't feel ripped off if I had paid for it. Play the demo and see what you think.

This is basically just a mobile game. Do mindless tasks that barely even require player input.

And of course, the game is jam packed with MTX. Don't bother with this one. There are better free games out there.

This game has potential. A lot of potential, in fact. Unfortunately the game is absolutely littered with bugs and in not even 45 minutes of gameplay, I've experienced 2 softlocks and had a menu icon stuck on my screen (requiring a restart to fix).

And from what I've been reading, this game hasn't had a meaningful update in a very long time. It's a shame. If the developers fix the game, it's absolutely worth picking up. But in its current state, your money is better spent elsewhere.

I can't recommend actually paying money for this game. If you happen to get it for free or as part of a bundle... still probably not worth your time unless you're an achievement hunter who wants a quick game to add to your perfect list. If you're decent at platformers, you should easily be able to 100% this game in under an hour, even though it requires two separate playthroughs.

This doesn't feel like a finished game. It feels like a promising tech demo. I like how the potatoman controls, but that's about it. The level design kind of reminds me of that old Flash game "The Unfair Platformer" with many of the hazards being deliberately unpredictable without having previously encountered them. But while that can be fun, it becomes frustrating since one of the game's two achievements requires you to complete the game without using any continues.

Also, once you reach the end screen, the only thing you can do is force-close the game. You can't even enter the pause menu to restart the game, which is a baffling design decision.

All in all, there are some decent ideas here, but everything is woefully underdeveloped. With some TLC there could be a good game in here, but don't waste your money on this. This is a game I'd hesitate to recommend if it were free.

Technical
-Game runs on a potato
-Performance is incredibly smooth and consistent
-99% bug-free

Visuals
-Beautiful macabre artstyle inspired by classic 30's cartoons
-Very smooth frame-by-frame hand-drawn animation
-Yes, it looks similar to Cuphead, but it's got its own identity
-Great character design
-Comic panel sections are less technically impressive, I personally didn't care for character design in these sections.

Music
-Decent, mostly atmospheric
-Boss tracks are good, but forgettable
-Final boss' theme absolutely slaps

Story
-You're an unsettling memory who has to delve into the mind of teenager Max in order to become a full-on phobia of clowns.
-Max's story is told via charming comic panels
-I personally was always engaged and was always fascinated by Max's psychological development
-Some pacing issues towards the end

Exploration
-Huge metroidvania map
-Goodies around every corner
-Some light puzzle sections, not too difficult
-Easy to miss things on the map towards the end of the game
-I nearly 100%ed the game by the time I hit the final boss without even meaning to. Fun time.

Combat
-Basic melee combat, 3-hit combo, can attack in-air, can attack upward
-Enemies all have easily understandable tells
-Most abilities and items suck in combat, late-game abilities are extremely powerful in the right circumstances
-Bosses are fun, but very tanky, sometimes excessively so
-Most bosses are pretty easy, final boss is a huge difficulty spike
-Hitboxes could occasionally be a little weird.

Conclusion

Beautiful game. Not the best metroidvania out there by a long shot, but it's visually stunning with an interesting story. Ultimately worth the price if you're a metroidvania fan considering the relatively low price point. If you're unsure, consider waiting for a sale. I personally beat the game in around 15 hours at near 100% completion (mostly grind for the remaining unlocks). I enjoyed myself well enough.

General Info
Shining Song Starnova: Idol Empire is a tycoon management simulator and a non-canon spinoff of the Shining Song Starnova visual novel by Love In Space. The aim is to build up a Jpop idol group and become a legend in the industry.

Technical info
Idol Empire is very low-intensity game, so you should have no difficulties meeting the minimum specs to run the game. In nearly 29 hours of gameplay, I encountered no crashes and only 4 or 5 instances of stutters/hitches. Loading times were minimal and overall the game runs very smoothly for me.

The biggest issue on a technical level is the numerous minor bugs that plague the game. None of the bugs I encountered were gamebreaking and almost all of them could be worked around, but it did leave a negative impression on me. Love In Space have been publishing numerous bugfixing patches since the game's release, so this may cease to be an issue in the future. I will amend this review should that be the case.

Art and Music
The art of Idol Empire is done in a somewhat cartoony and caricatured style and is noticeably different from the original visual novel except for the character portraits, which at a glance appear identical.

The music is mostly re-used from the original visual novel, but a few tracks have been given lyricless reprisals. The most common music you'll be hearing is some generic-sounding background noise for most activities in game, the main theme which is a triumphant-sounding blend of Jpop and Jrock, and rival theme, which has a more electroninc Jpop feeling. It's all competent, but enjoyment will come down to personal preference.

Gameplay
The gameplay of Idol Empire is all about management. You need to manage your time by making sure each of your idols is going about their business efficiently. You need to manage your resources by using your money to produce songs, set live events, pay your idols, and decorate your office in order to make more money. You also have to manage your space as all training/utility/production rooms will be placed by you.

One very nice system the game uses is essentially a way to customize how much you wish to micromanage. You'll always have to do a bit of micromanaging, but you can allow idols to train individual skills and take breaks on their own time, though by design they will be somewhat inefficient. You can also utilize the master scheduler, which will allow you to set times where certain actions will be automatically assigned to your idols at specified times, which is very useful when training space is a concern.

Overall, I found the gameplay enjoyable and engaging. The time went by very fast as I was playing. Once I got past the initial learning curve, I did find it fairly easy and by the time I was able to utilize the late-game Event Room, the game becomes incredibly easy (the Event Room is possibly the best profit stream in the game, and it scales to how well you're doing). The game is still fun regardless, but the difficulty does plateau and then drop off after a while.

One feature I appreciate is the unlockable furniture. These items are tied to in-game achievements and once you unlock them in any playthrough, they will be permanently accessible on any save file and in any game mode. These unlockables are very powerful, offering useful passive effects and being some of the most cost-effective items for boosting your Decor stat (which is very nice to have). These unlockables are what are likely to keep me playing.

The story mode is likely to take you between 25-35 hours to complete.

Overall, I'd say the game is well worth the $15 price tag, though there are definitely improvements that can be made, particularly with the numerous bugs.

It's impossible to really talk about this VN, even on a surface level, without major spoilers. So here's all I'll say about this game:

1. It's incredibly innovative. Dan Salvato clearly had high aspirations with DDLC.
2. It's fairly short compared to most VNs. You can easily complete/view everything within 1 or 2 days, depending on how fast you read.
3. Do your first full playthrough completely blind. Do not look up a synopsis, do not look up endings, do not look up how to succeed at the minigame, do not look up how to view the various easter eggs. Trust me on this. You will lose out on a lot of the experience if you know about any of it.

Apart from that, I'll say that as someone who enjoys more standard visual novels, I absolutely loved DDLC. I literally got chills down my spine and goosebumps at times. It actually would have been pretty damn good even without the parts that make it truly unique. It's free and it will run on a potato. Play this game.

TL;DR - The game has some potential, but overall, a lot of the core mechanics and design choices hinder the game and make it more frustrating than fun to play

Pros

-Charming art style

-Great music

-Good sound effects

-Cute intro

-Zero performance issues whatsoever

-The silhouette stages are absolutely beautiful. Props to the artist.

Cons

-Very short. Anyone even moderately experienced with platformers could beat this game in 1-2 sittings.

-Ember's left/right movement builds up to full speed, making the controls feel sluggish and making precision platforming very annoying.

-Nothing carries over between chapters, making progress gained (such as extra lives) feel meaningless. Also, this incentivises quitting out and restarting chapters if you lose a life before the first checkpoint in that chapter.

-The ice physics are very odd. The hanging ropes actually feel more ice-like than the ice itself

-There were a handful of minor bugs such as the game occasionally forgetting you've gained an extra life or not detecting a collision with the first bonus life.

-No scoring system. Your completion time is given at the end of a chapter, but it's not saved anywhere.

-No real replay value. There's nothing new or interesting enough to want to go back to. There's no "best time" or score, so no incentive to do better.

-Autoscrolling levels, which are made worse by the aformentioned sluggish controls

-Underwhelming finale

Conslusion

While definitely not shovelware, I can't recommend spending money on this game. Quite frankly, there are superior Flash platformers available for free. However, there are good ideas that could be expanded upon and if the weirdness with the controls was fixed the game would be substantially better, which gives me hope that any future games could actually be excellent.

This is probably the only game where the underwater level is the easiest.

It's also the only ragdoll physics game with stealth mechanics.

Definitely worth playing.

Like many others, I got this game for free from Bundlestars. I tried it out, and I have to say it was a fun way to spend a few hours. It certainly wasn't my favorite, but honestly, when it's on sale it's cheap enough that you can't really go wrong.

This game is basically a decent mobile game ported to PC, so don't expect anything too incredible. It's really just a time waster.

I probably won't ever complete it, but I can definitely see people enjoying it enough to do so.
