I think nearly 25 years after the release its time to give that masterpiece a proper review. I start with the pros, cons and give a little in-depth review after that.

Pros:

1. Story
2. Depth of all the main characters and side characters
3. Depth of the ingame world(s)
4. Magical and summoning system
5. Depth of gear optainable/useable and the unique skills of every character
6. Enemie design
7. Main villain
8. Boss battles
9. Fight against the endboss
10. Endgame, or rather pre-endgame content
11. Soundtrack
12. Ending and credits scene
13. No DLCs or ingame-events/crossover-events

Neutral:

1. Graphics (two dimension at it's best)
2. Worst version of FF VI out there

Cons:

1. An outdated battle system (random battles)
2. The felling when you finished and there isn't anymore to do

After a 140 hours playthrough of that awful abomination called FF 15 (on my Ps4), i thought its time to give some of the older FFs a proper review. I cant tell you anything new, because after all these years, everything have been said befor at one point.

I started with the SNEs version of the game (they called it FF III, in europe, for some reason) and played nearly every version of the game multiple times. That game charged a spark in my heart and from that point on i was in love with the FFs series and jrpgs overall (with the last few installments of FF trying really hard to destroy that love).

Where FF VI really shines, compared to some of the newest installlments, is the incredible depth of all 12 (14 with the two hidden ones) maincharacters. Even the side character are so well implemented in the story, you actually feel with all of them at every point throughout the whole game. You can really see whats possiple when a game is well written and well told at the same time. Carried by an absolutly loveable soundtrack and a main villain which is still unrivalled today.

The pre-endfight content is humogus. If it's searching for the perfect gear, weapons, summons, magic, all kind of secrets, ultimate challenges or just to gather all your characters (plus hidden ones). Whatever it will be it's just so much fun and keeps you highly motivated until the very end.

Long story short. Dont get fooled by new installments of the game, because the are just awful when it comes to storytelling and depth of chracters (FF 15 *cough, cough*). Maybe i just getting too old for that stuff, who knows ^^.
So, if you are not afraid to play in just two dimesions, then give that game a try. You can't lose more than a few bucks.
