Not entirely historically accurate but a surprisingly fun game in an era in which I struggle enjoying games. I'd recommend it.

Was super excited because it was said to be set in a hyper-realistic 3D scanned version of the Exclusion zone, but having been to Chernobyl I have found few commonalities. Otherwise it is an alright game.

This is literally a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reskin of MOWAS2. Same features, same gameplay, worse pathing, and worse scenarios. Do not buy it, seriously. I wish I listened to the reviews.

I am genuinely heartbroken to have to review a Halo game negatively for the first time in my life.

TL;DR at the End

As a precursor, I am not new to the series, I did not start at Halo 4, nor did I purchase this as my first game. This may very well be the reason I disliked this game, my expectations just might be too high. That being said, being disappointed in a game when you are comparing it to its counterparts from ten years ago is.... sad.

Personally, I enjoyed Halo for its rich lore, it really felt like there were alien civilisations bearing down on you, the games did an excellent job of bringing that lore to life, and if you wanted to expand upon it you could do as I did, and read the novels. This Halo feels like a shell, it has the aliens and the brutes and all that sure, but it doesn't feel like they are there. They are mindless NPCs with a few programmed lines, and that's how they feel. Lifeless, cold, empty, just bullet fodder. A point I will frequently bring up in this review is comparisons between this game and Just Cause 3, or Farcry 5. If you have played either of these games, you will be hard pressed in finding a difference between the generic human NPCs, and the multiple alien races of this game.

A second point I would like to address is the length. It took me about 16 hours to complete everything in the game. Every FOB, every squad rescue, every propaganda tower, all spartan cores, cosmetic upgrades, and every outpost. I paid $80 (CAD) for a 16 hour long game. I paid a similar price for Tom Clancys Ghost Recon and I've been playing it for 40 hours, hell I haven't even beaten the main campaign in it yet. This game simply isn't long enough to justify the price. This is the third time 343 has bungled this, and enough is enough.

A third point is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ content. I am infuriated at how little is actually in this game. The short playtime, lack of lore, and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ NPCs could be justified if there was reasonable content. Spoiler alert: there isn't. The story is bland, full of copy paste sections where you are doing the same thing over and over again. Sections in which you need to grab power seeds for a door for some reason that exist purely to pad the runtime, and meager boss fights that are difficult to distinguish between. (I will admit though, the two boss fights I did enjoy were the ones against the installation monitor, because I had to aim for specific parts of the body rather than ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ grenade spam). At the end of the day, once you get over your Halo fanboyism the game is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boring and plain. It genuinely tears me apart to have not enjoyed a Halo game you cannot even begin to understand.

Fourth is probably the weakest argument, Graphical errors. I understand these will be patched out, but delaying the release of a game for a year and there still being significant game breaking errors is just scummy.

In conclusion, as with all of the modern Halo games, 3 steps forward, 43 back. I tried so so so so so hard to enjoy this game, but the bland story, lack of lore, awful enemies, bad guns, and generally uninspired game play was just too much for me. Buy the game if you want, I don't give a ♥♥♥♥, but just know what you're getting into. This game had some really cool features, don't get me wrong, and the open world aspect would have been incredible if not for it following the mold of Farcry 5 and Just Cause 3 to the Tee.

I cannot recommend this game more. During the first hour I was quite disappointed by the poorly written script and mediocre voice acting, but it quickly picked up and exceeded my expectations afterwards. Definitely a must buy.
