Update:
2.5 hours later - I beat tetris. I thought my game was frozen but apparently if you play enough in the journey mode, you can win & it will lead you to end credits. Now, my score wasn't great and it took me a couple tries but I didn't realize that this was possible. It is strangely exhilarating!
