High learning curve but entertaining automation design.

Playability is similar to games like Minecraft where you continue to build and make interesting designs after beating the main objective of the game. If you do not like open ended games then I don't recommend but otherwise it is fun.

Contagion? Buggy and messy, Yes!
However its was the best $2.49 (sale) I spent and one of my favorite games. This isn't some grade A quality work of art but its a playable and fun zombie game. I would put the highest price tag for this game at $10. For the most fun, play by yourself or with friends that haven't beaten the escape maps yet. It's not as fun when someone else plows through the objectives and you're a lost noob.

EDIT Feb 7 2018:

Do not read the following unless you want a boring history of the game. As of Jan 3rd, development has officially halted while the Devs attempt to kick off a new project in order to fix the massive mess this game created. As this game stands it could be worth a dollar but probably not. If you want a mildly entertaining dinosaur shooter, play Orio Prelude for a dollar. If your excited about GoO 2 don't get your hopes up. Orion's history makes you wonder how long a person can stay in highschool while attempting to support themselves.

Edit: UPDATED REVIEW

With the launch of 2.0 there was a reset. I only played for a short while after the update, but I failed to get most of the promised reimbursement for the stuff I earned. I'm not sure if you have to do missions or such, but oh well, I don't play enough anymore for it to bother me though having to grind back to what I was at will take a considerable amount of time which is a little discouraging.

Anywho, I wanted to change up my recommendation for newer players looking to purchase this game.

In short, I do not recommend it. The most refreshing feature used to be the $1 title purchase but the project has become incredibily amitious and based on the content $25 is just too much. Overall, I liked the game when I played it more frequently but lack of content and forum drama caused me to set this on my back burner designated for Early Access games. From my experience with those I gifted the game to, this game is not a lasting game for many people. If you can secure this game for $10, I would recommend at least trying it out.

For those interested, I took the time to write a more informative review below aimed at those looking to purchase the game. To the best of my knowledge all the current information I gave is accurate unless I mentioned otherwise.

While there is more content since the summer when I wrote my last review, the new content along with the accompying controversy did not add a lasting element to the game. There is PvP, PvE, Spaceships (Dog Fighting), and now some NPCs. While that is a decent amount of content, it is still a far cry from the projected plan. Good or bad, there's plenty that hasn't been implemented such as mechs, open universe, or even the ideal Nova City. In short, we do not have the content!

Update schedules are usually monthly to bi-monthly (meaning every 2 months). Projected plans rarely stay on track and content put into updates sometime is changed. I have been both elated and disappointed by this as we recieved new content that wasn't announced and didn't recieve the original, planned content. For instance, I'm sure that numerous people recall that in the 1.7 update, mechs were to be introduced but the idea was shelved so Developers could fix and tidy up other parts of the game. Even less may recall that 1.5 was supposed to be a mega-update that brought numerous explorable regions and Nova City as well as PvP into the mix during summer 2016 but was ultimately divided into several smaller updates. Overall, there has been decent content progression during the past year of development.

As far as gameplay goes, it is both interesting and lack luster at the same time.
(This was one general section but I spaced it out relating to each element of gameplay so it was a little more readable)

-PvE is basically a "Waves game" where you defend a harvester from dinos and robots as you move about a map. There's a decent amount of customization that you can do for gameplay such as having 2 preset loadouts per each guardian, the ability to actively cycle the camera through Top-Down, 3rd, and 1st Person during gameplay, and gear that increases stats and gives special effects.

-PvP in the game isn't incredibly special and didn't hold my attention so I don't have much to say about how balanced or playable it is. Simply if you want a PvP game, focus on bigger titles like Halo, COD, or Battlefield.

-Spaceship PvP, I glanced over it in game so I do not actually know how well it currently plays if at all. What I do know is that it is currently Dog Fighting and there are 2 different ships.

-Outside of PvE and PvP, you can wander about different areas including a moon spacestation, a cave, a green rocky place, etc (Each area does have a name). NPCs were recently added that will give more missions in future updates with the promise of a full scale campaign story (Looking at past updates, I'm fairly certain this will be implemented sometime around Late March to Late May). You can customize your current guardians set of armor with many different armor pieces and shaders. There is a game shop as well as a premium shop that can be viewed through any terminal.

-Generally, it is more worthwhile farming than shopping at the game shop (though it was not always the case) but it is a nice way off picking up extra crafting materials or equipment 'Rerolls'. The premium shop tends to be on the expensive side in terms of time and money if you don't possess that the discount bonus that Pioneers, Elites, or Founders possess (These do go a long way). 10000000 game currency = 1000 premium currency = 1 dollar = 1/2 shader (some) = 1/5 guardian = roughly 4-5 games ranging from 1-2 hours a piece (Guardian armors and Guardians themselves used to be a packages for 10k premium but were split, I own all of them so I am a little unsure if they were actually split).

There is also a pay shop that has chests which give you the chance at random items including premium items (also expensive in terms of content granted). Early on, the premium currency was fairly simple through some give aways and achievements but give aways were temporarily stopped as well as the currency given through achievements being reduced. The game was stated that it would be pay or play and the best alternative used to be to play, but there is a visible attempt to get players to pay with recent implementations by drastically increasing play times required to unlock content.

-Guardians each have their own special ability and can switch between 2 preset loadouts that vary among each guardian. The level of the game purchased also determines what guardians are unlocked when you start. For instance, I have both the Founder and Elite status so I currently have all 11 or 12 guardians - I don't use them all. (Don't worry I got Founder way back when and I bought Elite when it was on sale). Unfortunately, because the game went through a bumpy F2P back to a title purchase, I am not entirely sure what version unlocks what considering I can't view all the content since I already own the title. If you are interested refer to the forum news and you should find your answer since there was an announcement within the last couple of weeks concerning it. Currently, the lowest title price is $25 (I think you may start out with the Assualt, Support, and Scout from Orion:Prelude but I am not 100%).

As a veteran player I know what each class has and what I like to play, so I could start from scratch and easily unlock the Guardian I want without too much hassle. But for those who are just starting, it takes a decent amount of time to unlock a class that you just found out you don't like to play and more time to find a second class you might like to play.

Its a decent dollar game. If you haven't played it on the xbox 360, I would try this out if you can pick it up for $.99 (currently 3 or 4 dollars when I wrote this review). If you have played it on 360, there a few new things that were added such as respawn beacons and teleports (permanent ones) that could amuse you.

Originally, I was never going to buy this game on PC. I played extensively on 360 and even bought all the Digital DNA titles that gave perks for CMZ (basically $1 dlc) and made it around 20000 blocks or so from the start in Endurance (whatever they call the non-save mode) and didn't really want to go through the game again.

Then I saw the updates and things they added recently and thought, "Hey, they did something with this finally. Maybe they are going to keep updating regularly." Well, I'm not sure how much dedication is going into this as they currently have their project Savage Lands to work on (going really well actually, updates monthly give or take a week). But to finish my thought, those measly updates they pushed out with a few new blocks and a couple new items were not worth my repurchase of this game. Not to mention this is a really old engine, so even if there is a major update of CMZ it will probably be a new game.

There's very little replayability to this game once you beat the undead dragon (final boss) unless you help your friends through to beat him (which I did a few times). Typically the grind to getting the gear to beat the dragon then traveling out to the 4000 some distance to fight him takes 4ish hours by yourself and maybe an hour or 2 with friends. The fight can be difficult or overly easy. First time I fought the dragon, there were only bloodstone weapons in the game. I didn't succeed before one of the fireball vollies managed to kill me in my floating base. The next time I actually took the time to go out to kill the dragon in endurance mode was when the alien update was released. That time I used the Dragon Seeking Missiles to fight him and built my base on the ground out of space goo. Two missiles and I won. I went "Oh, okay. Glad that wasn't a pain." But any veteran of CMZ can tell you, once you fight one dragon, you've fought them all, so don't expect much.

So basically the game boils down to - Grind. March. Die. March. Die. March and finally make it. Die. March back by teleporting. Kill the undead dragon and then rarely, if ever, play again. But remember, this was (and still is) an Indie game! It is well worth a dollar. $1 That's about it though. 2-20 hours of play time.
