A slice of life and all its pain

A Space for the Unbound is a heavy yet beautiful narrative-driven adventure about overcoming your fears and growing up, set in a rather unique setting of the 90s rural Indonesia. The game contains depictions of abuse, bullying, animal death, anxiety, depression and trauma so it may not be suitable for everyone.

Story

You play as Atma, a high school boy who has a very close friend named Raya. They’re both a bit ambivalent about graduating but together they map out a bucket list of things they want to do before the responsabilities of adulthood take over. While starting out on their adventure, Atma discovers a red book that grants him the ability to “space dive” into a person’s subconscious to help them face past trauma and make life-changing decisions. He soon discovers, however, that Raya has a similar but more destructive superpower that can alter reality itself. I’d say the story is one of those that are quite difficult to explain without spoiling it, but I assure you that it is one emotionally heavy story with many twists and interesting characters, one that will definitely make of you an emotioanl wreck by the end.

Visuals

Visually, A Space for the Unbound is a stunningly gorgeous game if you enjoy pixel art. There are some jaw-dropping images to be seen here, especially when the story starts going in very different directions than you initially thought it would. The character design is highly detailed and I loved the added expressiveness at times with emoji comic bubbles. The script is localized wonderfully and helps bring the characters and the emotions of a given scene to life.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack is catchy and relaxing and sets the mood for every scene and character. There are also vocal tracks that perfectly capture the game’s themes of sadness and loss and I would gladly listen to every one of these again. My only critique is that the music rarely shuts off, as if the game doesn’t trust the player to stay engaged with the world’s natural ambience. I can’t praise the soundtrack enough for the powerful emotion it conveys. It communicates the emotion behind the game’s setting and twists just as much as the story itself does.

Gameplay

Most of the game's chapters are spent free roaming a town and the game will ask you if you want to proceed to a “point of no return” of that chapter. Save before this, since there is missable content. You will encounter tricky puzzles, but I don’t find them overly cryptic, since the hint is usually nearby. The game does not have a lose condition but there will be things like quick time events that require some reflexes. You can fail these but you can try again as many times as you need. The gameplay is fairly standard as you walk around Loka City, interact with townsfolk, pick up objects, name and pet every adorable kitty in town. The side-scrolling, story-driven adventure supports both gamepad and keyboard and both are pretty seamless. There are plenty of arcade-like mini-games that I found to be a bit easier on the gamepad.

Verdict

A Space for the Unbound is an intensely rewarding experience that pulls all the right heartstrings. It may not be perfect, but it has an incredibly touching story that will keep you guessing until the very end. It is truly a memorable gaming experience you don’t want to miss. A true masterpiece that every story rich indie game fan should play at least once. 10/10 recommended.

Any victory against death will always be temporary

Hollow Knight is an enchanting Metroidvania Souls-Like game with beautiful 2d hand-drawn art style, wonderful soundtrack and outstanding level design. It's a game that offers a well-polished world that manages to be both difficult and fulfilling at the same time.

Story

Hollow Knight's story is told in a subtle way, it doesn’t shove the story in your face, it just lets you explore its world and piece together the lore for yourself as you sit down and enjoy every moment of the game. In fact, Hollow Knight tells you very little about what’s going on and instead sends you into a world full of monumental events that all happened long before you arrived. The aftermath of Hallownest’s troubled past is left for you to discover and comes through loud and clear, but only if you take the time to listen. It’s a tragic tale, one full of fallen heroes and terrible decisions but it still manages to make time for beautiful, calm and hopeful moments throughout.

Gameplay

The combat in Hollow Knight is relatively straightforward but starts out tricky as you learn to time quick directional sword slashes with jumps and dashes. It rewards patience and skill massively — killing enemies is a matter of sharp timing, learning attack patterns, and having quick reflexes more than just the upgrades you earn along the way. You can find upgrades to your weapon damage, increase your max health and equip charms with a variety of abilities.

Summary

If you like to explore, and you like a challenge, Hollow Knight is the game for you. It offers a vast world filled with upgrades and collectibles, challenging platforming sections and boss-battles, as well as a gripping story waiting to be uncovered. Overall, Hollow Knight is a dark and beautiful Metroidvania that's hard to put down. 10/10 recommended.

An absolutely brilliant game and probably the best squad-based shooter. Freedom Fighters is a superb blend of stealth, strategy and action with solid voice acting and amazing orchestral soundtrack. The graphics are spectacular for the time the game came out. The gameplay is rock-solid and tactical. The squad controls are simple and reliable in a tight fix. The storyline is a thrill ride of action and twists. Overall, it's a binge worthy game you will want to finish in one sitting and eventhough beating it can be very hard but it's not impossible. I found everything to be great about this game, it's such a shame that it is a forgotten gem and not many people know about it. 10/10 recommended.

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive is a stealth based strategy game that makes you really think before doing anything, one wrong move and you're dead. The wild west setting of the game is so refreshing and for such an old game, the graphics aren't that bad and the dialogues between the characters is entertaining. Despite being somehow difficult with some levels that might take more than an hour to finish, it is still a decent game. If you like western tactical games then Desperados is for you.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove manages to be a wonderful mix of nostalgia and various other platforming elements. Its simple gimmicks and mechanics are bound to keep anybody playing for long enough. The story, the level design as well as the game's challenges make Shovel Knight one of the best platformers designed in the 8-bit retro style. With this game, fans of old school sidescrollers will find everything they could want. If you don't mind dying a thousand times in a game, then you should totally get this.

As with all Hitman games there is a dark turn on most things, but this game gets the balance absolutely right, and it is all made better thanks to the excellent voice acting, story, development, atmosphere and graphics. This is my favourite Hitman game and if you're a fan of Hitman games, Blood Money will make you fall in love all over again.

For those of you new to the series, Warlords Battlecry III has a lot to offer that you won't find in any other RTS title, and if you like RTS games, there’s a lot to like here. The innovative gameplay and hero system, the numerous battles you can engage in to obtain titles, trading, upgrading buildings, creating armies to reflect your influence in the world of Etheria and so many other aspects of this game makes it the best and most addictive RTS game I've ever played yet. I remember playing the hell out of Warlords Battlecry games as a kid, not many people know about this game or have played it before and that's a shame because it deserves more recognition and love. I totally recommend this for any RTS or RPG fan.

An entertaining game in which your task is to make your neighbour mad by ruining his day by performing various tricks. Despite being short and repetitive, it's worth playing through at least once. Later levels can get actually quite tough if you want to 100% the whole game. If you like casual point & click games mixed with humour, I recommend playing Neighbours from Hell.

Watching a family drama unfold, through the eyes of a cat

Cats and the Other Lives is a narrative-focused point & click adventure following the story of a broken family from the perspective of their cat. Did this adventure leave a lasting impression on my life ? Definitely.

Story

Cats and the Other Lives follows the story of Aspen, the cat. His owner and patriarch of the house, Bernard Mason, has died. The family has gathered and are found trying to negotiate the problems they have with each other as well as what happens to the Mason estate. Through the eyes of Aspen, we see and hear these stories, as conversations play out across the different rooms of the mansion, but Aspen can also see past memories of this house and different versions of events. The story of Cats and the Other Lives is completely unique, but it is also extremely absorbing as you look to find out about family traumas and relationships. The writing and character-building are excellent. What’s so clever about this game is that it is being told to you through the eyes of a cat, who at times just happens to be in the room at the right time, hearing and seeing these conversations but at the same time Aspen will be chasing a mouse or scratching the sofa. It’s so interesting to tell a story in this way.

Gameplay

The gameplay works within a 2D world, where the cat can run and jump across furniture and bookcases. However it comes with a bit of an awkward control system for selecting objects or items to interact with. It doesn’t feel intuitive to start with; maybe a casualty of the transition from mouse to controller. It’s not a huge problem and it’s easy enough to get used to it, it just takes a little while. In a simple section, you might meow several times until one of the family members gets annoyed, opening up a window so you can go outside. You know, like real life cats do.

Graphics

The cat animations are brilliant, with some superb attention to detail. I loved the moments found in the environment and the way the cat sees into the past works brilliantly, with ghostly figures wandering around the mansion. I found that the pixel art style worked well and was quite cute for Cats and the Other Lives. This made the darker elements of the game feel even more striking and really made an emotional impact. There is also plenty of atmospheric music that fits the characters and amplifies scenes for the most part.

Summary

Overall, Cats and the Other Lives delivers mystery, drama, a compelling story, interesting characters, and of course, a cute cat. An emotional ride that is worth experiencing, 10/10 recommended.

Through its fun stages, weapon variety and unique spell system, Flynn: Son of Crimson makes for a fun platformer to have in your library. Not only did this game exceed my expectations, but it also had me immersed in its setting and characters. It may be tough to find a good indie platformer given the size of the genre, but there’s a genuine adventure waiting for you here. Described as a 2D Metroidvania, Flynn: Son of Crimson brings back the appeal of handcrafted platformers that reward the player with fun gameplay, fantastic characters and lore.
