Vaporwave is an electronic music microgenre that emerged in the early 2010s and spread among various online communities. It is characterized as a combination of pop, lounge, soft jazz and "elevator music".

The founder of the genre is considered to be the American electronic musician Daniel Lopatina (better known as Oneohtrix Point Never), or rather one of his side projects Chuck Person with the 2010 album "Chuck Person's Eccojams vol. 1". Later, he served as a source of inspiration for such projects as Vektroid, Internet Club, Infinity Frequencies and others, which continued and developed his undertaking.

The genre expresses slightly foggy memories of the recent past, expressed in a sound format. To achieve a characteristic vintage sound, the authors use samples from commercials, films and video games of the late eighties, nineties and early noughties.

An integral attribute of the genre is a recognizable visual accompaniment. The covers of vaporwave albums are usually dominated by neon tones, collages of photographs of antique statues, palm trees, scarlet sunsets and manga.
