This is more of a rant than a review.

If you feel like bonding or having closure with a furry protogen png through scripted text (or just feel like jorking it to the dlc), buy it.

The reason I don't recommend it is more on a personal level rather than my experience with the game (the game was kind of mid anyway). The game made me realize how low and lonely I am currently after a long, unproductive day and it made me feel kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥. I tried to get my mind off from it but all I could think of was wanting to come back to the closure and comfort the game's text made me feel; wanting it while knowing it wasn't real pissed me off. I bought the game for ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles, I wasn't expecting it to leave me with a feeling of loneliness after I was done with it. I got hit with a reality check and it made me sad.
I assume most of the people who unironically buy these games can't be far from my level of low. If you're one of those people; may this review serve you as a warning before buying it.

The character you "play as" says and does some things that piss me off too so it's not just my reality check that affects the recommendation.

From what I understand; the mixed reviews focus too much on comparing this game to the last few ones and what the game does wrong like changing Copen's playstyle, having the story feel like an excuse for this game's existence, locking the true ending behind hard mode, etc. The story and characters are pretty mid but the gameplay, stages, soundtracks and bosses (not including the dlc bosses) were enough for me to enjoy and play through the game. The change of Copen's playstyle wasn't necessary but it's something I liked. It definitely could've been done better by keeping him as the ranged character and having Blade from the previous game be close-ranged like how Copen is in this one rather than replacing his gun with a chainsaw.

I enjoy games that give the player a challenge in which it's up to them to learn the right patterns, learn from their mistakes and using the available resources to succeed and clear the level; this game does just that, especially in hard mode.
Hard mode gives you only 2 lives per stage, locks you from healing manually and from using the suit mods you could buy in the normal mode to power up your gear (checkpoints in this game heal you to full hp and they don't disappear in hard mode). If it ends up being too hard, there's an assist mode you can activate when making a save file that gives you access to manual healing and 200 lives.

My recommendation is if you're a Gunvolt fan or just care about the story, you're better off skipping this game or looking up a playthrough. If you're just looking for a somewhat challenging, fast-paced 2D platformer with pixel graphics and a bit of anime visual novel stuff on the side then give this game a try. I bought this game here when it was on sale and liked it enough to buy a physical copy on switch and play through the game there.
