Lawnmower Basics
So...You think you know how to mow a lawn huh???

🅃🄷🄸🄽🄺 🄰🄶🄰🄸🄽 🄲🄰🅂🅄🄰🄻

To mow a lawn, you have to BECOME the lawn.

You have to first think, "What lawnmower is right for me?"

Well... you first have to think of these things before your next purchase.

  • Weight: How heavy will it be when you’re pushing it?

  • Cutting width: The longer and bigger the mower is, the heavier it will be, but the less passes you’ll
have to make back and forth on your lawn, and thus the faster you’ll get the job done.

  • Cutting heights: What’s the range of heights you can adjust the blades up and down?

  • Money: How much will it cost to BUY and MAINTAIN my lawnmower.
Safety and You

In 2015, more than 274,000 people were treated for lawn mower-related injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Children under age 19 accounted for nearly 13,000 of these injuries.

MAINTAIN YOUR LAWNMOWER

-Keep lawn mowers in good working order. When using a lawn mower for the first time in a season, have it serviced to ensure that it is working correctly.

-Be sure the motor is off before inspecting or repairing lawn mower equipment.

-Use a stick or broom handle (not your hands or feet) to remove debris in lawnmowers.

OPERATE YOUR LAWNMOWER PROPERLY

-Read the instruction manual before using a lawn mower.

-Do not remove safety devices, shields, or guards on switches.

-Add fuel before starting the engine, not when it is running or hot.

-Do not leave a lawn mower unattended when it is running. If you must walk away from the machine, shut off the engine.

-Stay away from the engine cowling, as it can become very hot and burn unprotected flesh.

USE CAUTION

-Wear protective gloves, goggles, sturdy shoes, and long pants when you use lawn mowers. Never mow barefoot, or in sandals or flip flops.

-Do not drink alcoholic beverages before operating a lawn mower.

-Avoid distractions. Do not talk on your cell phone, text, or listen to music while mowing.

-Hands and feet should never be used to touch the lawn mower blade under any circumstances, even if the engine is off. If there is debris obstructing the blade, once you clear it, the blade can quickly swing around and cause serious injury.

KEEP CHILDREN SAFE

-Teach children to stay away from all lawn mowers, even those that are not in use.

-Children should not be allowed to play in or near where a lawn mower is being used.

-Never allow a child or another passenger to ride on a mower, even with parents. Doctors commonly see children with severe injuries to their feet caused by riding on the back of a rider mower with a parent or grandparent.

-Look behind you when backing up on a rider mower to avoid hitting children who may be playing behind you.

-Children should be at least 12 years of age before operating a push lawn mower, and age 16 to operate a riding lawn mower.

CONSIDER THE TERRAIN

-Remove stones, toys and debris from the lawn before mowing to prevent injuries from flying objects.

-Use caution when mowing hills and slopes. Mow across slopes with a push mower to avoid pulling the mower over your feet if you happen to slip. Mow up and down slopes with a riding mower to prevent the mower from tipping over. Do not cut wet grass.
Reel Mower

The reel mower is a primitive mower, yet it gets the job done.

PROS

It's Better for your grass: Power mowers cut the grass by chopping and tearing your grass, while reel mowers cut the grass by snipping it cleanly like a pair of scissors. Torn and shredded grass leaves your lawn vulnerable to disease and insect attacks.

It's Quiet: The only sound it makes is a satisfyingly quiet “snip-snip-snip” as the mower cuts the grass. You can even mow the lawn at 2:00 in the morning if you wanted. It's THAT quiet

It Creates NO Pollution: If you are a tree hugger, this mower is right for you. No engine to power this mower.

Hassle-Free: Push reel mowers are simple machines. You push it and blades spin around and cut your grass. That’s it. No pulling starter cords or priming the engine before you can mow. Just start walking and bam!, you’re cutting the grass. Also, you’ll never have to buy gas, oil, or spark plugs ever again. About the only maintenance you’ll have with your manual reel mower is blade sharpening

Very Cheap: Even a “top-of-the-line” reel mowers costs less than most power mowers. And if you get one of the smaller, classic models, they can run you less than $100. Plus, there are no maintenance costs.

Safety: While some dangers still exist when using a reel mower, they’re much, much safer than power mowers. If you run over a rock, instead of shooting it out like a bullet, your mower just jams.

Excerise: Who exercises anymore? Although some older models can be quite heavy. It's easy to push around unless going up-hill.

These mowers are also really easy to store. No worry of bulky equiptment.

CONS

Only good for small yards: Manual reel mowers are suited for small to medium-sized yards. Most experts agree that if you have to mow more than 8,000 square feet, you’re better off using a power push or riding mower.

Clippings: If you’re one of those folks who prefer to bag your clippings, then a push reel mower probably isn’t for you. While some push reel mowers have a basket that will catch your clippings, they don’t work very well, and many don’t offer any clipping catcher at all.

Also, push reel mowers work best on yards that are already well-maintained. They don’t cut really long grass too well, so if you always let your grass get pretty long before you cut it, you’re better off using a power mower.

Not Good with bumpy yards: If your lawn has a lot of bumps, the reel mower wont do a good job of cutting, mainly because the wheels can’t get good traction to move the blade. You have to come back and trim that with a weed-wacker.

Not great cutting width: Most reel mowers usually have a cutting width of 14-18 inches compared to the moterized mowers. Also some reel mower do have a cut height setting, but most do not.

Push/Self-Propeled Mowers

The Push and Self-Propeled mowers come in MANY different shapes and styles and you probably have used this one before.

*Note since there is a Gas and Electric and Battery and a self propel option, the layout of pro and cons will be different.

Prices

Battery - $50 - $300
Electric - $150 - $350
Gas - $200 - $650 (Most gas powered push mowers are now self propeled

Emissions

Battery - NONE
Electric - NONE
Gas -YES

Power

Battery - Compared to the other to types, battery powered mowers are the weakest and batteries need to be recharged in certain conditions depending on the manufacturer.

Electric - Kinda mediocre, it gets the job done. In addition, depending on the lawn size, you have to find a LONG extension cord if your yard isnt small.

Gas - Probably the best when it comes to mow power out of the three. With a 2 stroke engine, all you have to worry is running out of gas.

Maintence

Battery - Very Little, Charging the Battery, Sharpen Blades, then your'e all set.

Electric - Nothing Really, just sharpen blades inspect electric cords before using (if you accedently hit the cord while mowing last time) , plug in and GO!

Gas - Needs the most maintence out of the three, changing oil sharpening blades refueling

Yard Size

Battery - Generally good for small yards only because the battery life can be terrible on some brands of battery mowers.

Electric - Good for small and medium yards, but be ready to find the extension cord!

Gas - Great for small and medium and maybe some large yards. Depending on large yards if you have that extra gas.

Other Info:
With these mowers, there is ALOT to choose from all are good for storage if you dont have too much room. Some are lightweight and easy to manuver as well as all of them can be adjusted for different lawn heights.
All push mowers dont do well in unkept yards (just like the reel mower). Unlike the reel mower, they can go over bumpy terrain. You can also get the optional grass clipping bags for all 3 different mowers.
Riding Mower - Lawn Tractor

The lawn tractor, there are different types of styles of this, the image above is probably the most used around.

PROS

Cutting Options - Many of these mower can cut long grass. Also you can cut different heights as well as more grass due to its cutting width from 38" model to a 54"- 61"in that will make cutting lawns a breeze.

Perfect for Medium to large yards - Thanks to it's bigger cutting width, it can cut more grass in less time. It make this mower perfect for bigger lawns.

Attachments - Lawn tractors can cut grass, but they can also do other things like plow snow, move trailers, pull stumps, dig holes, etc with certain model lawn tractors, you can get attachments to do all of that. (Sold seperately)

Be lazy - No pushing required, just ride and drive. Hassle-free.

CONS

Pricing - These mowers are in a range of $2000 - $4500 depending on what you want in them due to the many customization it can have. But it is a herty price.

Not good for small yards - Due to is bad turning radius on most models. Trying to mow a small yard with obstacles might take longer to cut.

Maintenance - The bigger the machine, the more maintenance it needs. these mowers also due to have a tendency to break down more often with the older model mowers requiring a new starter swith (from personal expirence happened 3 different mower brands.)

Bulky - Since this is a large machine, storage might be diffucult to find. Stores do sell covers for these machines, but I do not recommend storing it outudoors.
Riding Mower - ZTRs Zero Turn Mowers

Ah, zero turns. probably the biggest mower out there for residential use. You might have seen your local landscapers use these things for the rich neighbors down the road. Now you are playing with the big boys.

PROS

Speed - If the name of the game is getting done quickly and getting on to something else, zero turn lawn mowers win every time. On average, with equal deck size a zero turn will mow your yard in half the time as a riding lawn mower.

Good Cut Quality - Zero turns are designed and manufactured to be lawn mowing monsters and that’s what they are. On a zero turn, a high blade tip speed and fabricated deck, you’ll get a better cut than with a riding lawn mower. You get a better cut with a zero turn, especially one with a deck that is clean and blades that are sharp.

Maneuverability - The zero turning radius that is their namesake allows them to speed around trees and other landscaping obstacles with ease. Again, this allows for a speedier mow job, which has you off your lawn mower and doing whatever you like to do in your spare time as quickly as possible.

Clippings - ZTRs do come with an optional bagger to bag clippings.

CONS

Fuel Consumption - The bigger the gasoline engine the more fuel consumption you’re going to have. With a big mower, comes big responsiblies that also go with more maintence do come with this thing.

Hills - Small ZTRs with much weight on the rear wheels (to avoid the front wheels getting stuck) can pop wheelies going uphill.

Expirence - These mowers are VERY diffucult to hande, especially ones you operate with a lap bar to turn the mower. You need to mow a lawn a couple of times to get the hang of it and even then its still hard.

Pricing - Forget about it. These puppies can cost upwards of $3000 - $7000

Storage - These things are so bulky, you're gonna have to find some room for this.
