1) Place a crate on the floor, as usual.
2) Place a foundation so that the top of it is just breaching the lid of the 1st placed crate.
3) Place the 2nd crate on the foundation, being careful to align it with the 1st crate.
4) Remove foundation (with [End] key) and move it up so that it breaches lid of the 2nd crate.
5) Finally, place the 3rd crate on the foundation and then remove the foundation.

Use temporarily placed foundations to stack anything, such as mass storage or generators etc.

No, the ceiling is only 1 wall panel high.

Is your ceiling 1.5 blocks high? Or am I imagining things?
