I played it in the past, but Mass Effect would not be the game I would compare this to. Otherwise, you have to compare any game that uses a house/HQ or such as well. Besides, Mass Effect was not the 1st game using a mechanic like that. E.g. Knights of the Old Republic did it much sooner (2004) already.
The games came out on PC in the same year (console ME came a year sooner), therefore imho is not inspired or copied from ME, since they have been in development around the same time. if this would have come out years later, maybe.

Otherwise good review and I think I might not return to playing it again any time soon (if at all).
Too many, much better games out there and on my backlog.
