Tras el éxito de Dune II, Westwood Studios, dio un cambio de aires y de nombre, desarrollando este juego como una especie de continuación futurista de las guerras modernas con toques alienigenas. Es un juego que combina gestión de recursos con estrategia militar, con escenas entre misiones rodadas con actores reales, algo característico de la saga. Este primer juego pertenece a la linea argumental "tiberiam" ya que en posteriores juegos se exploraron varias lineas argumentales mas.
Fue todo un éxito, también cuenta con una comunidad muy dedicada entrega tras entrega . Su legado continua aún en nuestros tiempos.
