On July 7th, 2023, Officer Troy Vendelli and Sergeant Carwood Luck (two officers seen before on this channel dealing with a warehouse shooting, on May 9th) responded to a suspicious person call outside a Los Angeles motel. Officer Vendelli and Sergeant Luck came into contact with the reported car, and got out of their cars at the same time. Sergeant Luck reported to dispatch about the traffic stop after the radio transmission was complete, gun fire erupted and a hail of gun fire landed near Sergeant Luck. Sergeant at that point would be hit by one round, which would graze his left arm. After about a 2 minute shoot out, they decided to go around the parking lot to approach the suspect in a safer way. When they entered the doorway, another round of gun fire erupted, splitting Sergeant Luck and Officer Vendelli apart. Sergeant Luck was pinned down inside the Motel lobby where he could not return fire or move up. Officer Vendelli tried to return fire and hit the suspect but no success was made. When they entered finally the suspect left the motel and was running out, he hide behind a concrete brick stairwell and started another shooting there. Both officers returned fire and did not strike the suspect. The suspect, Larry Dawnson (32) started running Sergeant Luck stood in the doorway of the motel and started to shoot at Dawnson, Dawnson was struck and fell to the ground. Officers approached him telling him not to reach for the gun. Dawnson did the exact opposite and reached for the loaded AR-15. Both officer again fired at Dawnson, killing him instantly.

Sergeant Luck was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and bullet shrapnel from being shot, Officer Vendelli was fine. Both Officers have been placed on administrative leave where due to the pending investigation. This is a normal policy done by Officers after a Officer Involved Shooting.
