There is very little information about Space Empires 1. This is a collection of everything I could find and learn about this game. I'll update it as I learn more.

Space Empires 1 Contextual History
This is from the top Steam review, Vanessaira, who explains where this game was from:

"Aaron Hall back in 1993, was working on his personal project Space Empires and formed this game as a prototype for something bigger and in 1995. We got Space Empires II."

"Space Empires II was technically the first product released to the public and I remember sending in a money order to purchase this game after playing the shareware forever back in the mid 90s. I also got the CD when buying the complete bundle with Space Empire 4 Gold back in the early 2000s. Which was the only way I knew at the time, on how you actually got the original Space Empires prototype..."

[...]

"...As far as Space Empires as a game itself. It is a prototype. This version sold here is NOT a some magically finished version or enhanced. That was Space Empires II which again was the actual first commercial release."
Game Overview
Space Empires 1 is a hotseat multiplayer only game for 2 to 4 players. Yes, you can set it to only one player, but that leaves the user alone in an open galaxy with no opposition.

The game is very simple. Use a set income to produce ships, build bases, and launch attacks.
Buying vs Building/Constructing
There is no building or constructing in this game in the conventional sense. This game is about building forces PURCHASING units. You purchase ships and space stations using funds that are automatically added to your balance every turn.

(147 per turn to start.) This process is also true of SE2.

In order to start building your army, select the buy dropdown and click buy ships.
From there, the window that opens will show you what kind of ship you can purchase and which station they will arrive at next turn. Note the funds here. This rises at a set amount every turn.
Once you have added your ships and their destination, click Okay and they will arrive on your next turn.
Colonizing Planets
Move ships to a square adjacent to a planet, and have them attack it. When the planet is reduced to zero, it becomes property of your empire, and thus in the buy drop down, you can new select it to buy a space station or colony.
Send Message
This feature is interesting because it was absent from every following version of Space Empires and it implies the use of play-by-email gaming or something similar. It gives you the option to type out a message and have it appear for another player when it's their turn. Not very useful in a hot-seat game, but this feature is a big foreshadowing on things to come.
Further Reading
-Aaron Hall created an official READ ME which is included in this game. This serves as the only real documentation I have been able to find anywhere, so I created a Steam guide to make it more accessible.

Thanks for the guide. I just purchased this game on Epic dirt cheap, but I am finding that purchasing ships is not working. Did anyone else find a fix for this or is it just bad code?
