My recommendations
These are games I've actually played and can recommend.

Toki Tori 2+
Closest game I can think of in terms of "main" gameplay loop; solving puzzles with your knowledge of how certain animals behave. No road blocks, no unlocks, no combat. It even has a flute you can use to travel around!

Fez
If you loved some of the game's late-late puzzles you gonna love this game too! There's even a secret Fez Easter Egg in Animal Well

BABA IS YOU
Some of the meta-puzzles in AW made think of this game. If you liked post-credit puzzles and you really like to think outside the box, give this game a try!

Rain World
If you liked how Animal Well wasn't hand-holding you and you wished more games were like this, boy you gonna love this game. One of my favourites! If you decide to play this game, do yourself a favour and go entirely blind and don't give up in first area!!

Environmental Station Alpha
Deep, complex and hard as hell metroidvania. Maybe wait for a patch before buying since dev of this game said that there are some issues with running this game on W11.

Games I haven't play but others recommend
Here's a list of games that I cannot personally vouch for but others in the community seem to recommend

TUNIC
Haven't play this on yet, but there's Tunic Easter Egg in AW so that's pretty cool

Outer Wilds
It's on my backlog and seems to have similar sense of wonder and exploration to AW.

And of course:

If you think other games should be here, let me know! I'll add those I if think will fit.
P.S. If there're any grama errors let me know and I will fix them, English is not my native language

To elaborate, La Mulana is exceedingly cryptic, with a ton of environment based puzzles, and has a layered design where the deeper you go, the more you discover about the labyrinth, and how it's not what it seems.

La Mulana is a puzzle oriented metroidvania that deserves a mention.

Within an hour of booting up Animal Well I started thinking about Environmental Station Alpha again. Glad to see someone else felt that same connection! And man, what a good thing to be compared to

@SeedyE thanks for your in depth explanations. I'll try to update this guide shortly.

@SmokinOakum I should be more clear with my communication. I don't mean that if someone doesn't describe their suggestion, I won't consider it at all. As you say, making such guids can take time, and it's hard to reliably evaluate games only by myself, especially ones I haven't played. Anyone who describes at least a little bit of their recommendation helps me see what aspect of a particular game is similar to Animal Well for them.

The games below have some vibes in common, which I felt when playing Animal Well:

- You need to think about more than run-and-jump platforming!
- You need to experiment with abilities or items as they are introduced
- You both need to remember abilities and items you've already encountered, AND think about them in new & creative ways, as the game gets more complex
- When first seeing a screen or level, you might think "OK that looks impossible"
- Knowledge and abilities are gained later on in (some of) these games, that might make it possible to access previously blocked areas, or to uncover less obvious secrets, in places you saw earlier

On to the games, with specific reasons to recommend them.

- About Love, Hate, And The Other Ones
- its sequel, About Love, Hate, And The Other Ones 2
(Puzzle platformers where you influence things in the environment, e.g. by attracting or repelling them, like Animal Well's chinchillas)

- Blocks That Matter
- its sequel, Tetrobot and Co.
(Puzzle platformers where you break/collect parts of the world, and arrange/replace them elsewhere. Creative & unique approach to level traversal)

- Webbed
(An underground & overground world populated by other bugs, gaining & using abilities along with your web, to get around and interact with the world. Plus, it has an arachnophobia mode that lets you play as a lil' blob!)

Less likely to scratch the same itch, but almost there...
- Ilomilo (3D puzzle levels, in which you move & control objects/critters with different effects on the environment, to make platforms, bridges etc.)
- Thomas Was Alone (2D platformer, where you use different character abilities to overcome gaps or obstacles)
- #AkiRobots (Another 2D game where your movement leads to pushing/pulling, in order to manipulate the level into a solvable state. Not quite like the chinchillas)
- Yoku's Island Express (2D world with an open map, where there's an incentive to return to explored areas as you gain new abilities)

I mean guides take work and if youre not willing to put in the work to look them up yourself its not going to be a good guide. People can mislead or lie or just be wrong. Nor are you being given a large number of responses.
It's not that what youre asking is a lot im just saying maybe add into the "If you think other games should be here, let me know! I'll add those I if think will fit." something about you not having time and that providing a synopsis or short gameplay description would be helpful because right now youre asking for just game suggestions with the implication seemingly being you would research it yourself. :reheart:
