TL;DR: After Chapter 5, some humans made the robots mad so the robots nuked Earth and now they're in Australia to restock on uranium.
Backstory:
After the events of Chapter 5, both the robots and humans were split into many factions, though the United Nations was still by far the dominant human force. Some robot warlords sought peace with humanity, while other wished to finish the Emperor’s work.
A few decades later, an anti-robot group of human extremists discreetly hijacked a small set of robotic destroyers then used them to assault many core robot buildings. This turned many of the once neutral robot clans against humanity.
The humans and the few allied robot factions left, took a series of losses that ended with hostile ships surrounding Earth. The robots used dozens of ballistic missiles dropped from orbit to nuke most of Earth into submission and start a nuclear winter.
On Earth, organic life was harsh where it was still possible. Some robot factions took this opening to gun for the now mostly abandoned uranium mines since they provided the opportunity for quick exploitation.
