Ghost Identification by Process of Elimination: A Phasmophobia Test Guide
By thebigwillowtree
I create this to help not only identify but also rule out ghosts. By strategically using equipment and tracking specific behaviors, you can efficiently eliminate certain ghost types and save time. I would like to give credit to the YouTubers Warped and Coozie, and Imapy (creator of The The Ultimate Ghost Guide on the Steam guides).

Spirit
If a player smudges (use incense), it will NOT initiate a hunt for 3 minutes instead of the base 90 seconds. (DOES NOT INCLUDE THE DEMON)

Incense temporarily completely stops it when burned near them during a hunt

Wraith
Will NOT walk through salt (spread out salt instead of making salt piles and lead it into salt during a hunt)

Can teleport to a player outside of a hunt, creating EMF level 2 (Wraiths Phantoms and Banshees are teleporting ghosts; can lean more towards these ghosts if the ghost preferred room is at the entrance)
Phantom
Will NOT be shown in photos, including in D.O.T.S. activity (3-star photos detailed “ghost”)

Less frequent blinks (more invisible)

(Wraiths Phantoms and Banshees are ghosts; can lean more towards these ghosts if the ghost preferred room is at the entrance)
Poltergeist
Higher chance to throw items OUTSIDE of a hunt; MORE FREQUENT ITEM THROWS

Can throw single items with great force (FURTHER AND HIGHER THAN EVERY OTHER GHOST)

Can throw MULTIPLE items at once; (CREATE A PILE OF ITEMS AND LEAD IT INTO AND/OR AROUND THE PILE DURING A HUNT)

Banshee
Special screech on the parabolic microphone

Higher chance of performing singing ghost events over other types

Focuses on one specific player at a time, often roaming and interacting with them outside of hunts

(Wraiths Phantoms and Banshees are teleporting ghosts; can lean more towards these ghosts if the ghost preferred room is at the entrance)
Jinn
Can NOT turn off the fuse box

Will speed up during a hunt when a player is detected but will slow back down to normal speed once it catches up (with fuse box turned on)
Mare
Hates light

If a player turns a light switch on, it has a HIGHER chance to turn it immediately off (within seconds)

Can NOT turn on lights

Higher chance to mess with lights and break them

Demon
Only ghost that can hunt you at 100% sanity

Only ghost that can hunt you after 30 seconds of the prior hunt ending

Smudging grace period is shorter (60 seconds)

Increased crucifix range by 50% (can burn crucifix in the van)
Yurei
Outside of hunts and events, it is the only ghost that can fully close the front door

When smudged it returns to its favorite room and is trapped for 90 seconds

Double touches the door and SLAMS door shut (drains sanity by 15)

Oni
Can NOT do an air-ball event (turns off light and hisses/breathes at player)

Blinks more frequently during a hunt (more visible)
Yokai
Normally will hunt at 50 sanity

Can hunt a player around 80 sanity if you talk near it; (play a loud song near the room)

Short detecting radius (2.5 meters) while HUNTING (if a player is talking near it or has a flashlight on and it can NOT find them, it is most likely a Yokai); Most ghosts have lights/electronics flickering at 10 meters (15 meters for Raiju) but detect a player at 8 meters
Hantu
Can NOT turn on the fuse box

When the breaker is off, has visible cold breath during a hunt

Moves quicker in colder areas and slower in warmer areas

Speeds up very slowly during a hunt (it drops the temperature in the room as it is hunting)

Does NOT speed up with line of sight
Goryo
Will NEVER change the preferred room (ghost room)

Only visible through D.O.T.S. with a video camera

Myling
Quieter when hunting, can NOT hear footsteps from a normal distance; (drop flashlight during a hunt and if you do not hear footsteps until the flashlight is flicking, it is a Myling); can still hear muffled footsteps when it is on a different floor

Footsteps are quieter than the ghost noise(s) it makes (during a HUNT)

Makes sounds more frequently on the parabolic microphone
Onryo
RULE OUT IF: a firelight is set on top of a crucifix and the ghost uses the crucifix instead of blowing out the candle

If it blows out a firelight 3 times and it does hunt, it is an Onryo
The Twins
Can interact simultaneously (ex: item is thrown and almost immediately after another item is thrown in another room)

One twin is slightly faster and the other is slightly slower than the normal speed during a hunt
Raiju
Will speed up when near electronics that are left on (not a gradually speed up); (leave an electronic on and place it on the floor, then have it CHASE a player during the hunt)

Having multiple electronic equipments on increases hunt sanity threshold

Can disturb electronics from a greater distance
Obake
During a hunt, its model can change between blinks

1/6 chance to leave a unique fingerprint pattern (2 fingers on a light switch, 6 fingers on a door or window, and 5 fingers on a keyboard instead of 4) (may shorten fingerprint duration in half)
The Mimic
Has “4” evidence; will ALWAYS show Ghost Orbs (even with all evidence hidden)

Can mimic EVERY ghost ability and behavior; changes every 60 seconds
Moroi
Average team sanity dictates its speed

Can curse players, making sanity drain faster

Will be disoriented longer when smudged during a hunt (7.5 seconds instead of 5 seconds)
Deogen
Fast when it doesn’t detect a player, slow when it does

Always knows your location (a player can NOT hide from it) (a player will have to loop it)

Special growl that it makes over Spirit Box (very rare)

Thaye
Very active the first time a player gets nearby

Can hunt at 75 sanity

As the time spent near the ghost increases, the slower and less interactive it becomes

Ages with time with player nearby (if Ouiji Board is available, ask the ghost its age and ask again later in the game)

Will NOT speed up as it chases a player

Does have line of sight buildup
