If I have to chose where to stay as a tank crew I think I would chose a German tank for its durability and value given to the crew (late medium tank /or/ heavy tank).

If I had to chose what tanks to use as a commander of an army I would chose Sherman/T-34 and the reason why is that you could produce them in huge numbers, they could move on tracks while still not failing mechanically, no trains needed to relocate them and most where always combat ready.

I think no nation reached the perfect solution of making a MBT in time during WWII.
Maybe the tank that saw combat and was more closer to a modern MBT was the Pershing, but it saw intensive combat just later in Korea.

I think the best mix was achieved by british in 1944 by combining regular 75mm Sherman/Cromwell + Sherman Firefly, they had numbers, reliability etc and when needed they had huge firepower too ( 17 pdr one of the best if not the best cannon of WWII )
