Introduction
This guide is meant for people who are either having trouble with Nightmare mode or are wondering exactly how difficult the Nightmare mode is.

There are many discussion threads about people complaining how Nightmare is too brutal and how they spent days trying to beat it. Not gonna lie, Nightmare is definitely NOT easy. However, it's nowhere near as daunting as some people make it out to be.

Here's a quick rundown on Nightmare and how you can beat it with minimal frustration.
Basics
First off, Nightmare and regular story mode only have three differences:

1. Your character wears a spiffy sheriff outfit in Nightmare mode.
2. Completing Nightmare unlocks an alternate ending to the game.
3. You only have two checkpoints in the entire game (after Acts 1 & 2).

As you may have guessed, that last part is what makes Nightmare so scary. It's very easy to become demoralized after having to replay 30+ minutes of content because you died before reaching a checkpoint. Also, you have to beat Nightmare mode in one sitting because exiting the game means that you start over from the beginning of Act 1.

Secondly, your progress from the story mode carries over. This means you start with all the health and stamina pickups you found during the main game. Sadly, these upgrades will not help you all that much. You are most likely to die due to missed jumps, environmental hazards or that f**king helicopter – all of which mean instant death, no matter how much health you have.

There's a no-commentary Nightmare mode playthrough video on YouTube that I suggest you watch when having trouble with specific sections of the game. It’s even better if you can have that video playing on a separate screen or laptop while in-game, so you can periodically pause the game and check the video to remind yourself what part comes next.

Act 1
There aren't any terribly difficult spots that should cause concern here, but I'll mention a few in addition to some suggestions. It should take about 20-30 minutes to complete this act, depending on how safe you want to play it.

NOTE: All screenshots are taken in normal mode, because I’m not insane enough to replay Nightmare just to take screenshots.
  • In the garage with the car lifts, it’s possible to directly jump to the ladder from the top of the car.

  • When you first have to dodge a large group of zombies (after running over the collapsing bridge), you can use the taunt ('F') to play it safe. This advice applies to many places in the game. It's easy to forget you have the taunt ability, because very few spots actually require you to use it, but it can make your life a lot easier. You can also taunt when hanging onto cables or fences.

  • When you pick up the revolver midway through the act, you can get a ton of extra ammo from the crates right next to it. This makes all following zombie encounters in this act quite trivial. You'll lose the gun at the beginning of the next act anyway, so don't worry about conserving ammo.

    One headshot, one kill.

  • You don’t have to stick around after you taunt the zombies on top of the broken building. They will fall to their death on their own.

  • You also don’t need to waste time checking the interactable objects (like the music box or the broken RV).

  • During the final running part (after opening the sloooow garage door), you can rush and jump past the zombies before they react (not too hard, but can be dangerous if you mess up). As long as you know the route, it shouldn’t pose a problem (either practice it on normal or watch a video beforehand).
Act 2 (first half)
This entire act is one giant deathtrap and probably the reason why you're reading this guide. It takes about 45-60 minutes to complete. Play it safe, because you will spawn right back at the beginning of The Rat's maze if you die at any point. Honestly, the developers should've simply added a checkpoint in the middle of this act and everyone would be happy.

The first half is all about platforming, while the second half is all about dodging zombies with almost no dangerous platforming. For this guide, I’ve divided the act into five parts.

First part – sewer maze
  • The first part includes lots of unskippable dialogue and moments when you have to wait for the Rat to operate levers and such. Yes, it gets annoying. This can further increase the frustration when you have to hear the same lines over and over again after dying and restarting from the checkpoint.

  • You can easily skip the four falling spike traps by jumping directly on top of them from the ledge.

  • Don't sprint-jump (Left Shift) when leaping over pressure plates and spikes, or you'll likely hit the second trap after clearing the first. This advice also applies to some other platforming parts in this section.

  • The part with pushing the crate around is basically a breather, as it contains no difficult platforming, hazards or enemies.

  • In the next part, you don't have to wait for the Rat to hand you the photo, you can jump down immediately.

  • Try to line up the floating crate with the middle of the dividing line so you can easily make the two jumps after raising the water level again.

  • When jumping off the pipe right afterwards, make sure you shimmy right to the end, or you might miss the grab.

  • The pools of water in the next part are not lethal, so don't worry about falling in.

  • At the end of the maze, in the subway, you can just run past the zombies and grab the ladder by jumping from the crate in the corner.

Second part - suburbia
  • This is simply a short segment of running past packs of zombies. You can't bypass the first group entirely by climbing along the cable, because it'll snap at a certain point, so be prepared to roll and run (or jump off before it snaps).

  • Just keep a decent pace and run through the connecting houses and streets. As long as you don't fall between the houses, this part should pose no problem. Be careful with the connecting cable between two of the houses near the end, because it will snap as well.
Act 2 (second half)
Third part - helicopter
  • The chopper will chase you in several areas, spraying bullets at you. Getting hit once means you're dead and back at the beginning of the sewer maze. Don't get hit.

  • First chase: a simple running jump, followed by a rolling jump (to roll under the water tower) will get you clear easily enough.

  • Second chase: immediately after the first one, basic running jumps again. You're safe once you reach the construction crane.

  • Third chase: the chopper reappears and keeps shooting at you through the windows of the building. Just keep running and drop down to the bottom floor. There will be three scripted scenes that are easy to bypass – chopper shoots the zombies in the first room, then you just run past it full sprint in the second room, then taunt a zombie to walk in front of the chopper’s sight in the third room.

  • Fourth chase: lengthy sequence across the rooftops, many things can go wrong here. Make sure you jump over the table inside the office, then only running jumps all the way across the rooftops. Don't roll after jumping, because it can mess up your pace and you don't take fall damage at any point in this section anyway.

Your biggest threats are the fences. When climbing them, only press UP. It's instinctive to keep pressing Forward/Right as you climb, but this will cause the character to cross BACK over when he reaches the top, costing you precious seconds. Holding UP is enough to make the character cross over properly. When you reach the last two fences, you can jump-roll through the first one.

You're safe as soon as you cross over the second fence (see screenshots above).

  • When climbing the broken hotel sign immediately after the chase, make sure you don't accidentally fall off. Just thought I'd mention this, because this was how I died on my first and only failed attempt on Nightmare Act 2.

  • Fifth chase: immediately after climbing the hotel sign. More fences and running jumps. To save time, make sure you roll after leaping through the office building window to get through the hole in the fence in one smooth jump. You're safe after you fall through the roof at the end.

  • Sixth chase: inside the office building, after receiving the axe. Use taunt here to call over the nearby zombies inside the rooms and kill them off before running through, otherwise you risk getting stuck and subsequently mowed down by the helicopter. The bullets WILL kill you even behind the wooden boards and concrete pillars.

It’s safe to stand near the door at the end (see screenshot). When you drop to the final floor, jump the desk and don't trip over the boxes. You're safe after you crash through the wall and fall into the dumpster.

The chopper flies off, never to be seen again.

Fourth part – stadium
  • After you drop down the hatch following the cutscene, you'll need to jump past the zombies in two rooms and block the door behind you with the shelf. This is where the random element can screw you over, as zombies will sometimes grab you as you try to jump past. This is one of the easiest places in the game to get swarmed by zombies.

Alternatively, you can take on the zombies with your axe and slaughter them all if you have enough stamina (hold down the melee button for a guaranteed knockdown). Feel free to practice this section on normal mode. You also get the gun and ammo from the corpse in the last room. Loot the corpse repeatedly to pick up more bullets.

  • Upon dropping down the ventilation shaft after the parking garage, you will be chased by a huge pack of zombies. Use gun to pick off the few zombies ahead of you and outrun the pack.

  • You can bypass the first large group of zombies in the parking lot by climbing on the high cable. After you climb down the post, jump down and shoot your way past the few remaining zombies.

  • Kill the handful of zombies outside the stadium with your axe and/or gun. It’s easier than trying to dodge them.

  • Use taunt and your guns to get past the connected locker rooms and warehouses. Again, it’s less risky than trying to dodge the zombies. Your ammo will be replenished for the next part anyway.

Fifth part - hospital
  • Nowhere near as difficult as the previous parts. There is almost no platforming here, nothing dangerous at least. Thanks to the shotgun and ammo refill, you are basically a walking arsenal. Don't be afraid to use your guns.

  • When you have finally found the medicine and are climbing to the top of elevator shaft, it might be less risky to jump directly from the ventilation shaft instead of dropping down to the ledge first.

  • During the final run part, don’t trip over the desk and chair (can be hard to spot), and shoot any zombie on your path.
Act 3
This is a very short act and not nearly as hazardous as the previous one. It should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. Since you now have the checkpoint after finishing Act 2, you've pretty much won already.
  • Use the gun to blast through the first group of zombies. There's a corpse with infinite ammo right next to them.

  • The collapsing building is probably the hardest part of this act, because you need to run through it pretty much flawlessly in order to make it. Fortunately, it's only about a minute away from the starting checkpoint, so there's not much to replay even if you die.

  • There's a second collapsing building a bit later, although not as hard. When climbing up, don't forget to jump off the ladder before the block above falls.

  • In the final part of the act, you will have a companion. You will fail the act if the companion dies. Don’t run too far ahead at the beginning of the chase part, or she will likely get shot. You’re safe after you jump the canal.

  • You don't have to headshot the human enemies to kill them, anywhere will do. As long as you don't go too close to them, they will not shoot you.

  • When waiting for the sloooow garage door to raise, there's a corpse with shotgun ammo nearby.

Once inside, just break the lock on the final door and dash to the pier to finish the game.

You can watch the alternate ending cutscene from the main menu (Memories > Extras > Videos).
Conclusion
That's about it. I hope this guide has been useful.

Thanks for reading.

Good luck and have fun playing!

In Act 3 you're not safe after you jump the canale. I got shot plenty of times in normal more. You need to jump, turn, shoot the soldier, pull the girl up fast, shoot a second soldier, then move on, climb the fence and quickly shoot the 2 other soldiers before they shoot you.
