Tbh regular and early gifting and trade makes it possible to 'break' the game, to the point that a Diety game is easiest when playing diplomatically. By making friends, the AI can provide a steady stream of income and 'loans' throughout the game. By the time you have coal, you can have them trading you money for just a few pieces of coal, and they will do trades back to back to back in one turn.
Of course, this takes all the fun out of the game if you have them paying you to play.
May you rule in peace
when you're not busy trampling the enemy under your hoofs.
