Skill Side Effects
By Arriator
All of the 21 in-game Skills provide useful benefits to you while activated, but some may come with additional caveats or prove problematic due to only affecting a limited range of opponents. Here's what I've catalogued so far.

Skill Side Effects
Weapon Rain
  • The weapons can be of any types, and will occasionally be mismatched.
  • Significantly hindered by the Weapon Master skills and Unarmed Master (see beiow).

Staff Master, Sword Master, Club Master
  • Activating one of these may weaken the other weapon types! For example, with Staff Master, Clubs may not last as long. This can be bypassed by activating all three. I'm still trying to verify this, if you have any information, please leave a comment below!
  • Mastered weapons are always preferred, if available, and will be picked up first.

Three Arrows, Three Daggers, Three Bombs
  • These stack. Most enemies won't carry more than two ranged weapon types, though.
  • Unlike the Weapon Master skills, activating part of this set does not affect the other types. Pick your favorites!

Light 'Em Up
  • The range of Light 'Em Up does not extend all the way off-screen, which is a common misconception. However...
  • When Light 'Em Up activates, the game grants you a Dash to every single enemy currently present on the stage, allowing you to clear it out.
  • The skill only lasts for 10 seconds of real time and deactivates without warning, so it's easily possible to Miss when it suddenly does.

Unarmed Master
  • While the skill is activated, you are forbidden from using any kind of melee weapon for any reason - even Catches (you will Deflect instead) and Throws!

Slow Enemies
  • May cause mistakes due to the sudden shift in enemy tempo.
  • Does not affect brawlers!

Brawl Master
  • No known side effects. This makes this skill generally a good idea to keep active.

Freezing Point
  • Frozen enemies are considered dead and will add to your kill count.
  • Works on Brawlers?
  • Their bodies are left behind as breakable background items.
  • As Smash rounds disallow use of skills, Freezing Point loses a significant amount of value.

Deep Impact
  • Does not leave bodies or cause weapon drops/special kills, but does add to your kill count.
  • Works on Brawlers?
  • May allow for a brief moment to catch your breath.

Heal
  • If you are at maximum health when Heal activates, the skill will be stored and used immediately after you take damage. However...
  • As healing occurs after damage is taken, taking a hit in stages limiting you to 1 health will still kill you. Consider Deflect Gray/Deflect Color instead.

Deflect Gray, Deflect Color
  • Entirely negates damage taken, but does not damage the enemy in retaliation. This merely prevents an instance of you receiving damage due to e.g. a Miss or failure to keep up with the breakneck speed.
  • Deflect Color works on Brawlers.

Throw Weapon
  • Does not function with Unarmed Master active, as you are prevented from even picking up melee weapons.
  • The weapons retain their usual throwing behavior:
    • Swords will spin, slicing through an entire side of the screen unstopped.
    • Staves fly straight forward until they hit an enemy, at which point they turn around. Staves can only hit three enemies; the third enemy will be impaled, occasionally letting you reuse the staff.
    • Maces fly in an arc upwards, bouncing on the ground. Like Staves, if they hit an enemy they will reverse direction, but gradually speed up, eventually arcing off-screen.

Iron Fist
  • Slows down enemies for a moment once its kill requirement is met.
  • Your next kill immediately decreases enemy speed to a negative value, forcing them to back off a little. They will then resume moving towards you, but they have to build up speed again.
  • Works on Brawlers.
  • Enemies that spawn after skill activation are unaffected! This means you may suddenly find yourself with an influx of fast enemies rushing you while the "feared" enemies are still building up speed.

Venom Fist
  • Does not work on Brawlers.
  • Technically works on gray enemies, but the activating hit for Venom Fist kills them immediately, which prevents the effect from triggering.
  • You need to attack the enemy. It doesn't matter if the hit is deflected, or dodged.

Gray Out
  • Works on Brawlers.
  • Causes more Throwers to spawn than usual.

Slow Assault
  • Decreases enemy spawn rate by 25% temporarily.
  • Can act as a temporary breather, but once the spawn rate returns to normal may leave you prone to mistakes.
  • The enemy order will remain the same (unless you get defeated or otherwise quit), as will the speed of the enemies themselves. This merely changes how frequently new enemies appear.

Something to add here:

Freezing point and Unarmed master have a weird interaction together.

I've noticed that freezing point has a blue glow on your character when it is charged, which sometimes allows you to choose its direction. The blue fire from unarmed master's transformation seems to completely suppress this visual cue.

Adding another layer to this bad interaction is the kill count requirement being almost identical. Unarmed Master has 26 and Freezing Point has 27, which makes this happen quite frequently.

Yes, people still use this guide.

Trying for the 7000 kill survival. I'm learning there's no easy way to do it. I can't seem to get much further than 5500.

Honestly, I think that plain text is probably good. I'm not sure that enough people still play this game to justify the image additions, lol. If you do put the work in to add images, though, I'll see if I can get some people into OFDP so they can benefit from it.

On that note: Would you like me to attempt adding images to this guide, or is the current plain text format suitable enough?

Oh gosh, people still use this guide? Haha, thank you! I've decided to revamp the text and formatting a little, now that I've gained a halfway decent vocabulary. Remember, do not button mash and good luck! :SWHHeart:

Thanks a lot for putting this down! I decided to try to get back into this game, and there's some interesting stuff here.

Update: Turns out that Unarmed Master does not prevent you from using weapons, only while it's active (attempting to catch or pick up a weapon results in a deflect instead). Sorry!

Personally I use weapon rain with ALL of the mastery skills so I'm basically holding a weapon at all points in time except the start, but that's just what I do. I also use all three throwing skills with throw weapon so I can take out a lot of enemies from a distance, and it works surprisingly well.

Huh, today I learned! Thanks for the heads-up, I'll go fix it!
