"12 June 1666,

After the poor results on the first day of the four days battle(11 june 1666) for the Royal Navy, Admiral George Monck decided to destroy the Dutch navy by a direct attack and sailed to them from the southwest. However Admiral Michiel de Ruyter crossed his line sailing to the southeast, heavily damaging the English fleet and gaining the weather gauge.

A fierce battle started in which both fleets would give each other many broadsides, during the battle the Dutch rear fleet under Vice-Admiral Cornelis Tromp got cut off and successfully surrounded by the British due to faling to see the flag signals given by De Ruyter. Admiral Monck sensing he could pull off a second 'Lowestoft', orderded his fleet to presure the Dutch fleet even more and thus ordering the English to take more risks in defeating the Dutch fleet.

However Admiral Michiel de Ruyter pulled off a maneuver even Admiral Nelson could only dream of. He ordered his main fleet to maintain the battleline, and took his vanguard straight trough every English battleline forcing every enemy ship to take a heavy beating and fail or flee and make way. De Ruyter successfully broke the English encirclement and save his rear fleet and Admiral Tromp.
Afterwards he lead his rear fleet to rejoin the main fleet, and continue to make the English feel sorry they ever started the 2nd Anglo Dutch war.

Here we see from left to right "De Gouden Leeuw" (Vice-Admiral Cornelis Tromp), "Zierikzee" (Vice-Admiral Johan de Liefde) "De Zeven Provincien" (Admiral de Ruyter), the "Walcheren" (Captain Cornelis Evertsen de Jongste), the "HMS Victory" Vice-Admiral Christopher Myngs) and the "HMS Royal Prince" (Vice-Admiral George Ayscue).
HMS Victory would be forced to retreat and Vice Admiral Christopher Myngs would die from his wounds, HMS Royal Prince with Vice-Admiral George Ayscue would be captured on the third day (13 june 1666) of the four days battle.

A great day for the Netherlands indeed!."
