What is Range Score?

Range Score compares a vehicle’s current expected range to what was normal when new for that make, model, and battery configuration. We compare against original range, rather than EPA range, since many of the new cars we observe get significantly different range than the EPA-rated value.

For instance, the 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range has an EPA rated range of 310 miles, but in our observations, the like-new range for this vehicle is 303 miles. The 2018 Nissan LEAF is rated at 151 miles, but the like-new range that we’ve observed is 158 miles.

EV models currently supported with Range Scores include:

  • Audi e-tron (PHEVs and BEVs)
  • BMW i3
  • Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV
  • Chevrolet Volt
  • Ford F-150 Lightning
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E
  • Hyundai IONIQ 5

Range Score will continue to be developed and improved using cutting edge science and improvements to our data models. We will update this page when our methodology changes.
